Advocacy, the other way: "Why Congo Matters"
2009-09-13 17:52:00
The discussion around MSF UK's controversial video sparked quite a lot of comments around the topic 'How do you portray aid and poverty' or 'How do you make people think about these subjects'.So I thought it is a good idea to show another way. A way that touched me. Meet Emily Troutman.Emily Troutman is a writer and photographer living in Washington. She just came back after a month travelling around Kivu, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). She made a video collage of her pictures, mounted it with some gripping music and appropriate text. Its simplicity took me in, and contrasted sharply with the MSF video we talked about a few days ago. Have a look for yourself:I contacted Emily, and we had an interesting exchange:Why did you make this video?Emily: It was a rare opportunity to give voice to an issue that at this moment only exists at the fringes of the mainstream media. Was this your first trip to rural Africa?Emily: I also traveled with UNOCHA in the Gulu a...

Money Matters in Russian Relationships
2009-02-12 09:00:00
Having separate back accounts appears to Russians as a signal of distrust rather than of independence of both partners in a marriage, argues Visson (1998:154). Russian couples typically prefer that the woman should manage the family budget. The research of Vannoy shows that more than one-third of men and women prefer women to manage money. ...
It’s connecting that really matters
2009-02-10 04:54:00
In social media, “conversation” is a big buzz word. People at their keyboards “chatting” away on blogs, networks, Twitter, and etc. While social media offers opportunity for these so-called conversations, I think another “C word” is much more important and at the core of anything social. That word is connecting. Whether you just want to make friends, suggest a story idea or blog post, or want them to think positively of you (and use or buy your products/services), you generally need to connect with them. Find something or someone in common. Know something about them. Be relatable. People are much more comfortable working with other people they know or have some connection to. It goes to the heart of our innate desire to belong. You don’t need to be soul brothers or sisters with a person, but you do have to have some level of connection. Let’s look at an example in traditional media relations. To have any chance of successfully pitching...
China Bribes And Transparency.... Or Why The FCPA Matters.
2009-01-23 17:34:00
China Journal has an excellent interview with Alexandra A. Wrage, president of Trace International, a nonprofit group that works with corporations to reduce bribery as they do business abroad. The post is entitled, "Bribes and Transparency on Chinese Holidays: A Primer," and it sets out the basics of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and some of the most important things to do and to avoid to remain in compliance with it. I highly recommend it for Americans who does business overseas.

The Chief Justice goofed - and so did the new President! Obama said that “Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.” Not so. Blogging Matters: BlogRush has Shut Down
2008-10-31 23:16:00
BlogRush, a free service that provided a means to network out blog postings to other sites with similar topics, has shut down. John Reese started the service to helps sites like ours get more traffic.  Although we certainly did see a small increase in traffic, our interest in the service here at TCR was in providing easy access for our readers to other resources on the internet that spoke to political topics. While we certainly have other channels that provide access to the world of political debate, we’re disappointed to see John shut down BlogRush.  He did not make any money at it, and wasn’t focused on that as much as providing a quality service.  Evidently, the reasons for shutting down the service (found here) were related to issues around generating adequate traffic between sites and managing gaming and quality issues. Sites like TCR run on a shoestring, and services like BlogRush are always an opportunity to improve what we do to provide great content to our readers. ...

Life, Football, and What Matters
2008-10-29 19:00:00
by Nate This neanderthalic exercise we call football sure does have a way of teaching gentle lessons about life, team, and sacrifice. Some experience the ultimate sacrifice. Anyone close to me knows that I'm a Granny's boy. I grew up with my great-grandmother, living with her for almost 15 years. She was the sweetest little old lady God ever made. She taught me everything truly important about life before the age of 18 (you can read about it here in paperback or e-book). I owe everything to her, and honoring her memory. She was truly good people. Micah Edwards was grandma's boy too. He stayed with his grandmother who in illness could not get around very well. I tremble as I write this...it's too amazing...and too humbling...that this 14 year old boy from Alabama, when his grandmother's home caught on fire and he realized he could not evacuate her chose to lie with his grandma on the bed and die with her instead of letting her die alone. Let that sink in. Roy Upchurch was a...
Why All This Matters
2008-10-24 21:30:00
Some regular readers of this blog seem to be surprised by the passion I am showing in promoting the BPMN+BPEL cause. For many, BPEL is just another execution language for processes, and what really matters is their notation. For me, it is the very embodiment of the vision I have been trying to realize for over nine years now. It has been a long and tortuous road, partially illustrated by this past article, and I need to shed some lights on some of its detours in order for outsiders to really appreciate why all this matters, to me and my team at the very least. When I started Intalio back in 1999, I had a pretty clear vision for the platform I wanted to build, but I did not know what to call it. For lack of a better term, I described it as a Transactional Workflow System. In a nutshell, it would allow less-technical people to build transactional applications by drawing simple flow charts. I presented my vision to Intalio's co-founder and CTO, Assaf Arkin, and he hated it, with a ven...

The High Cost of Being Wrong: Why Data Detection Matters
2008-10-20 10:00:00
Imagine you see a car stopped on some train tracks, and you hear a train coming. How do you react? Do you ignore the sound of the train, thinking it won’t hit the car? In that same vein, not having an accurate data loss prevention (DLP) solution in place within your organization is akin to standing by and watching that train wreck about to happen – all while pretending you can’t see what’s going on even though the train’s horn is blaring. In my ten years of experience in the search and categorization space, I can tell you that the risk of a DLP software policy allowing false negatives, when sensitive documents are missed by the policy and considered safe, is potentially extremely costly to a company...

Why COSMO Matters During a Recession
2008-10-10 18:17:00
During a recession, budgets get cut, and money is spent only for things that are absolutely necessary to a company's survival. As a result, many projects get delayed, across the board, and IT projects are no exception. In fact, for the many companies that bought into Nicholas Carr's view that IT doesn't matter, IT budgets are among the first to be cut, which is the reason why the stocks of so many publicly-traded software companies are taking a plunge as I am writing these lines. Nevertheless, life must go on, even during the darkest hours of the mot brutal recession, and many projects still must be carried on, albeit with limited budgets. In such a context, using software licensed through the COSMO model might really help. Let me explain why. The fundamental problem with the traditional software licensing model based on perpetual licenses is that it requires the acquisition of expensive licenses upfront, funded from a capital expenditure budget line. If the budget is not availab...

Why It Matters to Come Out as a Gay Republican
2008-10-08 23:10:00
For the past year or so, I have been pondering writing a memoir, not necessarily because my life has been particularly interesting, but because, I believe, lessons I’ve learned, largely by taking the wrong path, may well have some universal significance. Perhaps the most significant of those lessons is to remain true to yourself, even if you risk the opprobrium of your peers.  As I’ve expressed several times on this blog (here and here for example), when I moved to LA in 1999, I decided (by and large) to hide my conservative politics, that is, to borrow an expression, I went back into the political closet. I did so, largely because the few conservatives I knew who were familiar with the entertainment industry said it would be career suicide to identify oneself as a Republican.  I learned later it was even a challenge in some segments of the industry for Democrats to be open about their support for Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries. In this town, one does ...

English votes on English matters - Unique Powers.
2008-06-09 11:07:00
Why is the question of English votes on English matters so difficult to sort out? We've had Malcolm Rifkind's Grand Committee, which it is argued will only add another layer of government. Now after a lengthy process Ken Clarke comes up with another bloody stupid idea. From the Telegraph: He (Ken Clarke) is said to have advised allowing all MPs to vote on English legislation at the initial second reading stage of parliamentary scrutiny. But only English MPs would get to vote during the detailed committee stage of the legislative process, where real changes can be effected. At the third and final reading, all MPs could once again vote, but a new parliamentary undertaking would prevent any party using Scottish votes to block amendments made by English MPs.Why oh why can't we just stop Scottish MPs voting in England on any matter that would normally be devolved to Scotland? In other words - any subject that English MPs are not allowed to vote on in Scotland. Surely that would be a f...
What matters more?
2008-06-07 05:18:00
Location, location, location Yeah...we've all heard the line before. However, what is a great location for me might not be the best location for you. Maybe what is important to you is proximity to work, nightlife, places of worship or recreation. A good location could be one that is surburban or urban. Location is a very subjective thing. What truely defines a good location is the ability to attract and appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers resulting in the highest resale price at the time of sale. A good location, in terms of resale value, offers well maintained properties, a diverse and thriving economy, low crime rates, easy access to transportation and/or highways and close proximity to essential services and shops; to name a few. Whether or not you have children in school, a good perceived location is one that's associated with quality schools. Areas in and around Somerset offers choices between urban areas, such as New ...

Politico's John Harris Do as I say. Not as I do in "How Small Stories Become Big News"It would be a big story if Clinton said something like this: ?Hey, I know it looks bad for me now But, think about it. Obama could get shot and I?d get to be the nominee after all.? But Clinton?s clumsiness does not excuse news media clumsiness in making a minor story seem like a major one. A note on the randomness of the news: If this really was a big story, then the media has blown it for months. Clinton made similar remarks to Time magazine back in March. (The Wall Street Journal reporter with Clinton has an entertaining look at how the pack traveling with the candidate initially missed the story.)Blame cable Tee Vee...

Letters to Editor - Guardianship Matters
2008-05-27 06:10:00
Guardianship corruption is rampant in this country. Please read the above web sites. The public needs to be informed. They could be next on the hit list! One last comment to the first letter which was submitted concerning a woman's son who was ripping their mother off, then the courts became involved which only compounded the dilemma since the lawyer/guardian was another rip off con artist!I want to warn everyone out there, it is NOT a good idea to get the courts involved in family feuds. You will always come out defeated, and the situation will be much worse than before. People need to work the best way they can within their families to work these situations out.The courts (probate Judges and lawyers, social workers) love cases like this woman. It is a piece of cake to them! The usual plan of attack by the courts is to proclaim the family does not get along, therefore there needs to be a distant "third party" to take control of the disputed persons life affairs. At that time the new...

Why Twitter Matters
2008-05-21 00:40:00
It's easy to laugh at nonsense on Twitter, the microblogging rage. "My nose is leaking," writes someone called Zapples, "so imma go to sleep now.?" But I've heard lots of similar drivel (and even produced some myself) on the phone?an important technology if there ever was one. The key question today isn't what's dumb on Twitter, but instead how a service with bite-size messages topping out at 140 characters can be smart, useful, maybe even necessary. Here's why I'm looking. In the last few months, the traffic on Twitter has exploded, growing far beyond its circles of bleeding-edge tech enthusiasts and hard-core social networkers. Businesses such as H&R Block are now using Twitter to respond to customer queries. Market researchers look to it to scope out minute-by-minute trends. Media groups are focusing on Twitterers as first-to-the-scene reporters. (They were on top of the May 12 China earthquake within minutes.) Loads of new appli...
