The game, Akalabath, soon sold 30,000 units, and cemented his career in gaming. As he now prepares his new game, Tabula Rasa for release, his lecture at Develop made it clear just how risky MMORPG development is, but also showed that if you get it right, "you're set for life." Garriott discussed how the continuous technological advancements of early home computers impacted on game design, and how disruptive hardware upheavals can cause game design to "periodically reset to [a] basic gameplay dynamic." Offline gaming, according to Garriott took twenty years to develop, and with the online gaming industry approaching just half that, he was critical of current design choices, "Basic game design has not changed in the last ten years." Instead of text chatting, users could draw on a sketch pad with their mouse (or a drawing tablet) and send it to their pals. While this feature provided by EasyBits enhances the social tool box of Skype users, making it like the Bebo drawing function (a very popular one according to its founders), it could be reused to complete office tools. Of course, some improvements would be needed; vector drawing instead of raw painting for example, or a catalog of shapes available to quick charts or design sketches. But at the end, such a tool might turn Skype into a low-cost/free collaboration platform that will be rivaling 1VideoConference or DimDim.
