Max-capacity rail cars maxed out by CTA
2009-07-05 19:05:00 As huge throngs of people made their way our of Grant Park Friday night after viewing the fireworks, some Brown Line riders might have done a double take in boarding one of the CTA's three "max-capacity" rail cars. These train cars have most of the seats removed to allow for greater capacity. These rail cars were first broached by then CTA President Ron Huberman at the first CTA Tattler Coffee with Ron more than a year ago. Then last fall the CTA spent about $10,000 per rail car to roll out three test cars. It turns out those max-capacity cars failed the test and plans to expand the pilot were quietly dropped late last year. "The factors were that customers didn't...

2008-05-12 03:06:00 ?Do you know who one of the most popular customers of credit card companies is right now? People who have been through bankruptcy. The reason ... is that we know two things about them. One is that they can't file for bankruptcy again. And the second is they have a ?taste for credit? ... they are willing to make minimum monthly payments forever. And that's where we make our money.??I just watched Maxed Out: Hard Times, Easy Credit and the Era of Predatory Lenders. What a valuable film!

Maxed Out Documentary
2007-08-12 00:31:00 "Maxed Out" is a feature-length documentary about the financial industry, directed by James Scurlock. If I hadn't already sworn off excessive credit card debt, "Maxed Out" would have been the thing to make me do so. The movie is the financial industry's Fahrenheit 911 equivalent.Review"Maxed Out" takes an inside look at the financial industry, revealing the industry's drivers and the effects excessive debt can have on consumers. What "Maxed Out" does very well is showing viewers the cunning and underhanded tactics that credit card companies and debt collectors use to make profits. These companies are portrayed as merciless predators, preying on the unsophisticated, irresponsible, underprivileged, or all of the above. When credit card companies are urged to screen customers who are least likely to pay and more likely to cause bankruptcy losses, the response is "Why would we cut out those people? They're our most profitable."Two mothers talk of their college-aged children, desperate ...
Maxed Out Documentary
2007-08-12 00:31:00 Maxed Out shows how the modern financial industry really works, explains the true definition of "preferred customer" and tells us why the poor are getting poorer and the rich getting richer. By turns hilarious and profoundly disturbing, Maxed Out paints a picture of a national nightmare which is all too real for most of us.Maxed Out reveals the secrets of the new bank. John Ballew, a Midwestern banker whose neighborhood bank has been merged so many times he's lost count, tells us why suggestive selling is the primary qualification for working at a modern bank. Bud Hibbs, a well-known consumer advocate and the collection industry's enemy number one, explains why banks want us to be late. Liz Warren, a Harvard Professor who conducted the largest study of why Americans are going broke?at a rate higher than during the Great Depression?debunks the conventional wisdom that only "bad apples" declare bankruptcy. Liz's study proves that the bare necessities, not Prada shoes, are killing A...

Avoiding Maxed Out Credit Cards
2007-07-15 03:07:00 Hi,This blog is not intended for any readers who pay off their credit cards without exception at the end of each month. For the rest of us, to maintain control over our credit card balances, it is a good idea to avoid the following:1) Consistently charging groceries on a credit card. The reason is that statistics show people purchase food on credit which they otherwise wouldn't purchase if using cash.2) Putting utility bills on a credit card. Utility bills should be part of the monthly fixed expenses and be paid on a cash basis each month.3) Making a car payment with a credit card. There are many reasons for this, but a significant one is that it's a sign that "Peter is being robbed to pay Paul".4) When traveling to places like Las Vegas, many people find it much safer if they leave the majority of their credit cards at home. 5) Avoid using credit cards for large purchases of stock or any other investment vehicles. To maintain a handle on our financial health at all times, it is ne...

New movie and book on credit-addicted Americans - Maxed Out by James Scurlo
2007-03-24 11:21:00 Some smart people are starting to write books and make movies about everything we've been talking about here at HP. The American economy isn't fine folks. People aren't doing well. All that wealth you see is just a mirage. And out of control consumerism is not a good thing. It was all bankrolled by debt, massive, out of control debt. And now the bill is coming due. Here's a book (and movie) on this out of control debt and addiction to credit cards - I encourage all of you to go see it, or read the book.Deep in Debt, Deeper in Denial"Maxed Out," a documentary that opens nationwide next week, examines the dark side of America's love affair with debt."Maxed Out" is directed by filmmaker James Scurlock, a Wharton business school dropout and entrepreneur. Scurlock also wrote a book based on the film, which is due out next week from Scribner, a division of Simon & Schuster.Scurlock says he started out hoping to do a lighthearted riff on consumer irresponsibility, but was shocked by...

New Film: Maxed Out
2007-02-21 05:00:02 A thought-provoking and shocking look into the world of the U.S. credit industry is coming to a theater near you. The film ‘Maxed Out’ goes in detail about America’s addiction to debt - to the sum of $2.4 trillion, which is 1/5 of the total size of the economy. The movie explores one of the prime culprits of the crisis, probably your bank, which regularly lends to those with “less than perfect” credit. If you don’t know, now you know - the banks make a killing off of interest rates, late fees, overdraft charges, etc. That has been their bread and butter for years that has driven profits, while our government (of course) turned the other cheek and relaxed lending laws and did away with most bankruptcy protection. ‘Maxed Out’ hits theaters on March 9 and seems like it will be a very interesting flick. Director James Scurlock does uncover a tragic reality in all of this credit card mess - more and more suicide attempts by people who ...
