2008-04-08 02:39:00 Maybach Landaulet headed for the U.S. When the Maybach Landaulet broke cover last year at the Dubai Motor Show, it was believed that the super-luxury convertible wouldn't be for U.S. consumption. However, Maybach announced on Monday that the Landaulet will be headed to the United States. The German luxury automaker failed to mention how many Landaulets it planned to sell in the U.S., but did confirm the car was headed to our shores. Maybach sales have been lagging in the U.S. but it's unlikely that the low-production Landaulet will bolster U.S. sales. Since the brand's re-launch in 2001, Maybach has only sold about 10 percent of the cars originally predicted for this market. Like the Maybach 57 S and 62 S, the Landaulet will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V12 — good for 612 horsepower and 738 lb-ft or torque. Based on the Maybach 62 S sedan and powered by its 612-horsebower biturbo V12, the Landaulet's front seats are fully enclosed and separated from the rear passenger compartment by a removable divider. Back seat passengers, however, get a sliding soft roof that lets them take in the sun from the comfort of the trick Barcaloungers that pass for back seats in the Maybach. The chauffeur's area is is finished in black leather, while the rear is done in all white with piano black and gold-flecked black granite inserts. Today, only 42 of those remain. The other 29 U.S. dealers have given up their franchises, Mercedes USA CEO Ernst Lieb told Automotive News. Mercedes sold just 146 Maybachs in 2006, still far from its annual target. Lieb told the trade publication at the Frankfurt auto show his company negotiated with dealers on a case by case basis for terms of their buyout. One dealer said he got just 25 cents to the dollar in terms of his original investment. Dealer Chuck Ghesquiere said his overall sales of seven cars were not enough to justify the studio, demo car, and spare parts. A Mercedes spokeswoman said the company is now happy with the number of dealers, no immediate plans for further cuts.

We wonder if this has something to do with the recent delay of Acura’s NSX replacement, which was last know to be the Advanced Sports Car Concept. Acura has been tooling around with designs for the new NSX, including my favorite, the HSC: The NSX replacement will have either a V8 or V10 engine, according to previous speculation, but with this recent announcement there’s no telling what Acura has up their sleeve. They would have to seriously upgrade this next NSX to compete with Bentley or Maybach, or perhaps they’re decreasing the specs to leave room for an all-new, high-end model.
