Lamping resigns as Cardinals President, takes Meadowlands job
2008-03-14 13:43:00
After an active, ambitious and highly successful 13-year run as the Cardinals' team president, a tenure highlighted by the opening of the new Busch Stadium and the franchise's 10th World Series championship, Mark Lamping is heading to New York and New Jersey to pursue a new dream job.Lamping has resigned from the Cardinals to become CEO of the New Meadowlands Stadium Company. Lamping will supervise all facets of a $1.4 billion stadium project that will house two NFL teams, the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Lamping will be succeeded as president by Bill DeWitt III, the 40-year-old son of Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.
An Ugly Ending to an Ugly Season in the Meadowlands
2007-12-31 13:14:00
Herman Edwards made his first appearance back at Giants Stadium today as the Jets and Chiefs played their final games of the 2007 season today, Jets coming in 3-12 and the Chiefs 4-11. Both teams did a lot of substituting and evaluating as they looked for some positives for 2008, in the end the
Watch for Flood on Ion Television!
2007-12-05 05:51:00
I realized the Brits had an eye for the human-scale disaster movie when I was pretty young - in 1962, when I saw Day of the Triffids. It's still one of the best horror-disaster movies ever made.Triffids is about plants gone wild. Flood is about bad weather - hurricanes causing devastating floods, in particular.Flood was first released in the UK in August. It will be shown here in the U.S. on Ion Television - a digital television network - as a four-hour mini-series debuting on December 16.Don't miss it.Flood starts, at first, as an unsurprising post-Katrina movie, with maybe a little Jack Bauer mixed in. The establishment meteorologist misses the monstrosity of an approaching storm. An older scientist who predicted it could happen - or, if it did, that the precautions built to make sure it didn't wipe out London were insufficient - has been ignored, and is on the outs with his son, a marine engineer. Life's not the greatest for the son, either, insofar as he and his beaut...
Bills Snare Big Plays, Victory in The Meadowlands
2007-10-29 04:25:00
Evans grabs clinching TD from Losman (AP photo - Kathy Willens) Coming off the resolution of a quarterback controversy, the Buffalo Bills entered their contest with the New York Jets on Sunday focused on the future. One sloppy effort, one gutsy pass and a clinching turnover later, the Bills picked up their third win of the season with a 13-3 victory in The Meadowlands. It was J.P. Losman, however - not Trent Edwards - leading the Bills to victory in New York. Losman, who lost his job to Edwards last week after missing the last 3 games with a knee injury, entered the game in the third quarter after Edwards injured his throwing wrist. Two drives later, Losman and the offense had put up 10 straight points - enough to effectively seal the win. Losman, Defense Provide Spark Prior to his injury, Edwards was 14-of-21 passing for 130 yards and another interception; Edwards was efficient as usual, but an effective Jets blitz package was keeping the Bills' offense at bay. That ...
Book: Parcells still eyes return to the Meadowlands
2007-09-04 13:58:00
After reading a tease for the book "The GM: The Inside Story of a Dream Job and the Nightmares That Go With It," in the Daily News I can't wait for the book to be released. Written by Tom Callahan with the help of former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi the book -- to be released later this month -- appears to be full of interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits about the Giants. The juiciest? The various flirtations between the Giants and Bill Parcells during the past decade. There is apparently one story about how Parcells made it known during last season that he would accept the Giants GM job after Accorsi retired if the team was interested. I'm sure Dallas owner Jerry Jones will be thrilled about that revelation. Another story details how the Giants would have given the coaching job to Parcells instead of Jim Fassel back in 1997 but the Mara family couldn't reach GM George Young fast enough to stop him from offering Fassel the job. Crazy stuff that would have changed the course of the...
Meadowlands Concludes: Long and Winding Road Leading...
2007-08-06 07:58:00
Meadowlands concluded its first of who knows how many seasons tonight on Showtime with a satisfying eighth episode.Best tonight was the acting - especially of the core family. David Morrissey put in a top-notch performance, acting making Danny look happy when needed. Felicity Jones as Zoe and Harry Treadaway as Mark were the best they've been all season, too. And Lucy Cohu as Evelyn was excellent. The writing was outstanding, too. Zoe probably had the best lines - my favorite was her "bullet in the sun feels the same as a bullet in rain" (sun being out of Meadowlands, rain being in) - but just about everyone had memorable zingers. Kudos to writer Robert Murphy. The plot was good, too. We were treated to Brenda's back story tonight - and these back stories, as I mentioned last week, are making Meadowlands feel ever so slightly like Lost. Which is a high compliment, in my book. And speaking of Lost ... Danny is told the truth of his non-paternity of Zoe and Mark (Evelyn tells him, beca...
On Tonight, Sunday 8/5: THE 4400, THE COMPANY, and more?
2007-08-06 00:50:00
SIDE ORDER OF LIFE “What Price Truth?” - 8pm Lifetime I enjoy Side Order of Life more than State of Mind to be honest. It’s just such a sweet show and I really wonder where everybody will end up at the end of the season. Also what I find compelling is the side stories that Jenny ...
Meadowlands: Episode 7
2007-08-02 04:26:00
A strong, wrenching next-to-last episode of Showtime's Meadowlands on Sunday - but, also, surprisingly slow moving, especially given that there is only one more episode left in at least this season. We find out some of Dr. York's back story - just as we did Samantha's last week. York refused to go along with a cover-up about a medical treatment, and apparently paid the price - which, whatever it was, landed him in Meadowlands for his protection. But his professional morality, as we already know, does not extend to his patient Evelyn, and now Yorke increases the pressure. Sleep with me, just once, he tells her, and I'll forget that I know Danny's not the father. Otherwise--Evelyn eventually goes to see Yorke, and in one of the most powerful scenes in the series refuses to sleep with him. She correctly calls his blackmail rape, and also tries to appeal to his better nature. In the end, Yorke, broken, lets her go. On a positive note, he and his wife can now draw closer. But what abou...
Meadowlands: Episode 6: Jumpin' Jack Wrath
2007-07-25 21:29:00
Real reveals on Sunday's Episode 6 of Showtime's Meadowlands - the best episode since the debut.Plays on words and people were what made this episode tick. Does "Cape Wrath" sound like "Jack's Dead" to you? Maybe, a little. But that's what Freddie uses to try to get Danny to forget about Cape Wrath, which, we learn by the end of episode (Samantha tells Danny) is the name of the overall project of which Meadowlands is a part. So now we can see why the name of the show is Cape Wrath in the UK and Meadowlands in the US - America is, in the long perspective of world culture, part of the British realm of creation. But back to the show ... Freddie is hoping to get Danny to forget about Cape Wrath by associating that name with Jack's Dead, something Freddie and we know Danny would love to forget. These mind games, it turns out, are what Cape Wrath and Meadowlands are all about.Danny asks Samantha, near end of the episode, if he's brought his "family to hell". You've brought th...

Meadowlands: Episode 5
2007-07-16 05:26:00
Some gripping, instructive moments in Showtime's Meadowlands tonight ... we learn about Tom Tyrell's reasons for being there (he's an investigative reporter whose wife was blown up in car that he was supposed to be driving), find that Dr. York is willing to bend his professional "ethics" and lie for Evelyn (though he's hoping to get something back in appreciation from Evelyn, which I'm thinking he will), and hear Zoe talking about "metaphor" (which is almost nonexistent on television)..."One's reach must exceed one's grasp, or what's a metaphor?" - actually, that's not what Zoe said, but some witty Victorian in Dickens' time. I just wanted to work that in...But back to the show: We are finally beginning to see a little of what's really going here, or at least how things work in Meadowlands. Danny killed Jack. The powers that be don't want this to be the way that happened - especially after they sent Ormond in to do that job. So Jack's body is dug up, left on the street,...
Meadowlands: Episode 4
2007-07-11 22:55:00
A powerful - even brutal, in parts - episode of Showtime's Meadowlands on Sunday, in which Wintersgill tortures Danny, Evelyn gets a code to help him, Brenda is finding Mark more difficult to resist, and lusting Dr. York is up to his usual tricks with Evelyn. The ante is raised on all accounts.I'm no fan of torture, either in real life or television, so I would have been just as happy not to see Wintersgill work Danny over. But the intensity of those scenes calls our attention to a continuing question: just who is this guy, Wintersgill (for that matter, who is everyone in Meadowlands), but who is Wintersgill that he can get away with such brutality? Is a he a real cop on the Meadowlands beat, or a denizen of the strange town, under some kind of witness protection, who once was a cop and is now just going through the brutal motions? Why doesn't Samantha just take him out? (I'm expecting she will - but we don't really know too much about Samantha, either...)And speaking of Danny...
Meadowlands: Episode 3
2007-07-04 23:05:00
It's never easy disposing of a freshly killed body - and it's certainly even harder in Meadowlands, in which the majority seem this close to psycho...Danny and Mark are presumably among the sane, and Danny has just killed Donnelly, who was trying to rape Mark, and the father and son must now clean up the scene and get rid of the body.Unfortunately, this keeps Mark from showing up at that midnight football (soccer in American) game of the damned, and this sets Wintergsgill into checking into Mark's whereabouts. Now that Donnelly's gone, Wintersgill may be the most violent psycho in town - and, actually, he might have been that even when Donnelly was in fine form. And, worse, he has police authority, whatever exactly that means in this fascinating, dangerous place of second chances that might kill you.Meadowlands also has its quieter nutcases, as Evelyn begins to suspect when she goes to see Dr. York, for helping in having a baby. York, who's flat out gaga in love with Evelyn, mak...
Meadowlands: Episode 2
2007-06-26 00:52:00
Meadowlands is clearly a dangerous place - everyone who is there, unless they're there with a family member who is there, is there for a reason. In case anyone doubted that, we see it played in scalding violence in Episode 2...Jack the handyman is attracted to Zoe, who enjoys and invites his attention. Jack's played by Tom Hardy. To give you an idea of the mix of sensitivity and brutality he projects, think of Mickey Rourke with Harry Connick, Jr and even a little young Humphrey Bogart thrown in. (I know, that might seem like a stretch, but it's there.) So Jack comes over to the Brogan's house to see Zoe, but finds her brother Mark instead, dressed as Zoe ... Jack soon realizes this, but is excited by the situation nonetheless - he feeds on fright - and tries to rape Mark- At which point Danny comes home, pulls Jack off Mark, punches Jack and- Jack is dead. And to make matters worse, if that's possible - but making things worse may be the intriguing hallmark of Meadowlands - a m...

Orange Sunset In The Meadowlands Layout Here's a pretty neat layout of a sunset in the Jersey Meadowlands right near Giants Stadium. Sorry, this isn't a layout for Showtime's Meadowlands (which I must say was quite, um, interesting to say the least). Maybe I'll make a post and ...
Meadowlands Opens - with Tongues and Grooves
2007-06-18 18:04:00
Meadowlands opened on Showtime last night. I saw the first four episodes a few weeks ago, but watched the debut again last night, and enjoyed it even more...This may be the summer of strange tv shows - well, there are at least two of them, Meadowlands on Showtime and John from Cincinnati on HBO - and so far Meadowlands is well ahead in power, intrigue, and cavalcade of bizarre and compelling characters (though I haven't given up on John yet). The set-up is a family of four, the Brogans, put into something like a witness protection program - in Meadowlands.Presumably, everyone else in Meadowlands - whatever their ostensible job - has been put there for some dangerous reason, too.The MD - Dr. David York (Tristan Gemmill) - falls instantly love with Mrs. Brogan (Lucy Cohu). The cop in town - Bernard Wintersgill (Ralph Brown) - clearly has a taste for torture. (He also had a nice sharp tongue - when the Brogans apologize for squabbling in public, Wintersgill tells them, "Don't be sorry...

Preview ... Intriguingly Miasmic Meadowlands on Showtime
2007-05-27 05:08:00
From Ancient Greece until late in the 19th century, it was thought that the swamps gave rise to poisonous vapors - miasmas - which tainted the air and caused all manner of illness and disorientation. The main alternate theory blamed human maladies on demons and devils. When you were sad, you were said to have the blue devils ... the origin of what we today call the blues.Showtime's new 8-episode series Meadowlands premieres Sunday, June 17. I just saw the first four episodes. And while a doctor and music play important roles, this highly original darkling series is much more than that. In fact, it is so original - in pacing and story - that it almost defies categories. For starters, think The Prisoner meets Twin Peaks meets Dexter meets any story about witness protection programs. The Brogans come to Meadowlands. We don't know why. But we do know that they better not leave. And we do know that not only the Brogans but everyone else in Meadowlands has some kind of story tha...
