Measles Epidemic: Another Result of A Bad News Media
2008-08-23 01:10:00 Imagine that. After hundreds of news articles hyping the danger of the Measles vaccination causing autism, a lot of parents didn’t give their kids shots. Usually they got away with it, thanks to something called “herd immunity”, which means if most people are immune, there are fewer contacts to give it to your own kid. But now there ...

From Digg: I've Got Measles! Thanks Mom!
2008-02-29 19:39:00 First of all, read this from the description:There are new measles outbreaks right now in California and New York. Why? Parents failed to immunize their kids. Please digg so more parents will read that the link to autism has been debunked. Measles is highly contagious and can cause brain swelling, pneumonia, and even death. Read the full story.Alright, first of all I would like to say that ignoring basic immunization is just plain stupid. It is irresponsible parenting. Yes it is possible that you're little Jimmy may get some kind of allergy or rash or some minor discomfort from the shot. That is FAR better than him having a serious illness with profound health effects later on in life. It bothers me to no end that someone could even try to justify avoiding the medicines which have helped save us from outbreaks sucks as smallpox and the like.I would also like to make another point. Religious communities, take note of what it says in the article. Believing in your imaginary all-power...

Studies Affirm Need for Influenza and Measles Vaccinations in HIV-Infected
2007-07-28 12:46:00 Two new studies emphasize the importance of delivering measles and influenza vaccines to HIV-infected individuals. Both studies are published in the August 1 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, now available online.William J. Moss, MD, and colleagues at the Johns Hopkins University and elsewhere studied immune responses to measles vaccine in HIV-infected and uninfected children in Zambia from 2000 to 2004, when measles endemic in a country that still has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. Measles poses a greater fatality risk in HIV-infected children than in uninfected children.Measles vaccine was administered in both groups at age 9 months. This is the age recommended for infants who are not HIV-infected, but it is commonly also the age when HIV-infected infants are vaccinated against measles. Children were followed for up to 27 months thereafter. Some received repeat vaccination. Measles-specific antibodies in the blood were then measured on subsequent ...

Measles Vaccinations Need To Be Repeated To Protect HIV-infected Children
2007-07-18 19:07:00 HIV-infected children may require repeat measles vaccination for protection. Researchers found that only half of the HIV-infected children who survived without antiretroviral therapy maintained protective antibody levels 27 months after receiving measles vaccine. By comparison, 89 percent of children without HIV maintained their immunity, as did 92 percent of the HIV-infected children who were revaccinated ...

Since the subcellular localization of MMR proteins is essential for proper MMR function, we characterized possible nuclear localization signals (NLSs) in hEXO1. Using fluorescent fusion proteins, we show that the sequence ...

Article: persistence of measles antibodies after 2 doses of measles vaccine
2007-03-10 12:51:02 Objective To evaluate the persistence of measles antibodies after 2 doses of measles vaccine in a setting where exposure to wild-type measles was unlikely. Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000, an achievement attributed to effective implementation of a routine 2-dose vaccination policy. Some have questioned whether measles transmission could resume if immunity wanes in the absence of boosting from wild-type measles. Design Prospective, observational, volunteer cohort study. Setting Rural Wisconsin health maintenance organization. Participants Children who received the second measles vaccine dose at kindergarten (aged 4-6 years) or middle school (aged 10-12 years) in 1994 or 1995. Serum samples were collected periodically during a 10-year period for the kindergarten group and a 5-year period for the middle school group. Intervention Second dose of measles vaccine. Main Outcome Measure Measles antibody levels were assessed ...

Seroprevalence of measles among norwegian military conscripts in 2004
2007-02-03 18:31:03 Abstract??The study presented here was conducted in order to evaluate the impact of Norway?s childhood immunization program against measles, which was implemented in 1969. In the study, the level of measles immunity was measured among 1,405 military conscripts belonging to the first childhood immunization cohorts that were offered two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The overall seroprevalence of measles antibodies in this cohort was 89.3%. Two commercially available antibody assays were used, and the discordance between the two assays was 10.5%. Similar levels of immunity to measles were detected in earlier studies of Norwegian conscripts belonging to different childhood immunization cohorts. All they brought was measles! Spiritual group from India bla
2006-12-23 23:32:02 The Times of India: After holding the dubious distinction of exporting the polio virus to countries that had eradicated the disease, India's measles virus has now caused an outbreak in Australia. According to WHO's latest weekly epidemiological report, an importation of measles virus from India into Australia caused an outbreak that affected 84 people in six Australian states. The report says the outbreak "has been linked to the arrival of a spiritual group from India". Health minister A Ramadoss said:"Virus strains travel across the globe and are exported and imported by travellers harbouring it. Australia should have been careful." Measles is a serious health problem in India and is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among children below five. According to India's Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, an estimated 52,500 children were affected by measles in 2005. WHO estimates that 180,000 children may have died due to measles in 2005.
