We had a busy week over at Mechanics. We worked and slaved over a hot stove keyboard stove- to bring you something fresh for your senses (we actually prepare our posts while incanting over a boiling pot of toil and trouble on my stove, and transcribe them later, so I was right the first time). Head on over, or you'll break your mother's heart. That's right, your mother.Reporter Christopher Gray uncovers the story of non-profits on the South Side struggling to make basic ends meet--like keeping their heat on.Conor McCarthy wants to know what Sarah Palin is doing meddling in Virginia's election and talking about "her" values? Mechanics of Materials
2009-09-21 02:43:00
Applications of the principles of mechanics of materials have increased considerably over the last 25 years. Today's routine industrial practices and techniques were only esoteric research topics just a few years ago. That research is now relevant to such diverse but commonplace applications as electronic packaging, medical implantation, geology (seismic prediction), and engineered wood products. It is in this rapidly changing world that Madhukar Vable's Mechanics of Materials takes its place as a standard text for civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering majors, as well as for any other engineering discipline that includes mechanics of materials as a basic course.

His Elective Majesty, Mayor Richard M. Daley, of Ithaka Chicago  --Alfred, Lord TennysonIt little profits that an idle Mayor, by this over-priced park, among these barren potholes, match'd with a rubber stamp Council, I mete and dole unequal laws unto a savage race that hoard and sleep and feed and know not me....so, in other words, the Tribune reported that Mayor Daley has the lowest approval rating of his career. He blames it on the economy. I blame it on his not doing things that earn people's approval.Meanwhile, the City Council--unbelievably, given the above, which anybody could have explained to them if they listened to anybody--unanimously voted to give the Mayor a blank check for the Olympics, with some minor transparency...

Mechanics of a Horse Kick ? My Story (Part 3)
2009-09-02 07:01:00
One minute I was walking; the next, I was kicked in the thigh by a 1,100 pound mare. The impact threw me back about five feet and I lay, stunned, on the ground for a moment or two. This was the first time in 18 years of working with horses that I had been kicked by one.
The Mechanics: School closures, strikes, a new Senate candidate, reform vet
2009-08-31 16:32:00
Oh, it's good to be a Chicagoan. And Chicago got a little larger this week with the birth of Sofia Flores, daughter of Alderman Manny Flores (1st). Congratulations, Alderman. The Alliance for the Great Lakes announces its new campaign to raise awareness about the continued threats to our greatest natural resource. When the water wars start, we're going to be happy we live close to all this fresh water, people.Though he initially strongly supported the bill--calling it landmark--Governor Quinn this week vetoed a campaign finance reform bill that would have instituted Illinois' first ever contribution limits. Democratic leadership in the House and Senate provided him cover, saying they wanted the chance to make the bill stronger. The Civic Federation this week released...
Mechanics of a Horse Kick ? How ? and How to Avoid (Part 2)
2009-08-26 07:01:00
A horse's hindquarters can pack many pounds of force on the victim. How does that happen? And how can you avoid being on the receiving end of that delivery? In Part 1 of this series we learned why a horse kicks. If you master that information, there's a good chance you know enough to evade

The Mechanics: City sued, Bid committee reviewed, Central Area Plan debuted
2009-08-24 16:00:00
Good Monday morning, Chicago. It's been a long, rough year for Chicago politics so far. The fight over the Olympics, privatization, the special election, the schools poor performance and draconian turnarounds, the state budget. I know sometimes it seemed like you were alone; but just know, when you look back and see only one set of footprints, it was Gapers Block's Mechanics that carried you.The IVI-IPO has filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago over the privatization of the parking meters, arguing that the deal essentially violates state law despite Chicago's broad home-rule authority. Another chink in Daley's armor?Do liberal activists need a real ideology?Mick Dumke, of the Chicago Reader, distinguished himself in a debate on WTTW's Chicago Tonight,...

2009-08-17 16:16:00
Good morning Chicago. So starts the work week. Here's just some of the things that went down this week, in your name:We ask: just why is government transparency important? Why should we care about the Freedom of Information Act legislation that Governor Quinn still hasn't signed? And just how is the city doing on TIF transparency?Speaking of transparency, the Chicago Reader's Mick Dumke explores the continuing lack of it around the Parking Meter Privatization debacle.Oh, speaking of transparency again, Tribune columnist David Griesing says that the Chicago Olympic Bid Committee should open its record for inspection. And speaking of the Olympics (don't know how long I'm going to be able to keep up these segues) Ben Joravsky (and Steve Rhodes) call...
The Mechanics: Cash for Something or other, Hynes v. Quinn, Alexi & Sea
2009-08-10 15:31:00
Comptroller Dan Hynes, who many of you will know primarily from the name on your checks (state workers, state contractors), from that time you had to double check that Illinois had a comptroller, since you always assumed the Treasurer would probably just do that job (social studies teachers), or from the 2004 Democratic Primaries (the rest of you), made his race for Governor double super official. Hynes is a well respected public official; now he and Pat Quinn prepared for battle.**In this instance, "battle" means "arguing about state finances via surrogates and grainy TV commercials; also websites. The Reader's Ben Joravsky was not the only Olympics skeptic out there giving the 2016 Bid Committee the business.Their marketing effort and staged events have not been going particularly well--though the bid is still steaming along, at least according to Greg Hinz. The community group fighting the massive development at Wilson Yards in Uptown are preparing to file a new lawsuit to stop it.Comptroller Dan Hynes will be running for Governor, and has already traded barbs with Governor Quinn; state Representative Julie Hamos may be preparing for a run for Congress in the 10th District, where candidates are lining up on both sides; and Giannoulias makes his bid super-double-no-backsies official and tries to bait Kirk.Cook County takes steps to decriminalize marijuana to...

Mac Trounces PC in Pop Mechanics Head-to-Head
2008-04-16 17:21:00
A PC-versus-Mac shootout by Popular Mechanics scores the Mac way ahead in both price and performance. PopMech compared desktops and laptops, and not only did the Macs run rings around their Windows counterparts, they were cheaper to boot. The conclusion: Our biggest surprise, however, was that PCs were not the relative bargains we expected them to be. The Asus M51sr costs the same as a MacBook, while the Gateway One actually costs $300 more than an iMac. That means for the price of the Gateway you could buy an iMac, boost its hard drive to match the Gateway’s, purchase a copy of Vista to boot—and still save $100. My, how times have changed. A few years ago, the conventional wisdom was the opposite: PCs were cheaper and faster. Somehow though, I don’t think conventional wisdom will change. Macs will always be regarded as premium computers — thanks to their fab design and quality fit and finish — even if that’s not actually true.

Photo by gailf548. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.Over the weekend, I met a guy at a party who's been a mechanic for the last 15 years. Once we told each other what we do with our workdays, we naturally fell into a conversation about cars and green technology and the like. As part of our chat, he said something that struck me as pretty right-on. We hear a lot from auto company executives and media relations here at AutoblogGreen, and we hear from our share of clean car advocates and drivers fed up with gas prices. But mechanics? We don't hear a lot of their voices. But we should; as the guy told me, whatever the car companies make will one day break, and he's the guy who needs to put those vehicles back on the road. Twenty years ago, auto repair was a skill that you could learn from a book or someone who'd been doing it for a while. Today, though, on top of the basic understanding of how a vehicle works, you need all sorts of diagnostic equipment and computers just ...
El Duque reowrks mechanics to eliminate toe pain

Orlando Hernandez was scheduled to pitch batting practice, but instead simply worked on his mechanics while grasping a white towel in his right hand at New York Mets camp Monday the New York Daily News reported.Afterward, pitching coach Rick Peterson offered the most clear explanation yet for what's troubling El Duque: During Hernandez's signature high leg kick, his right heel is forced to lift off the mound, creating discomfort by the big toe. El Duque is reworking his mechanics and largely ridding himself of the leg kick in order to keep the foot flat on the rubber and avoid the pain.Peterson suggested Hernandez had a breakthrough Monday. El Duque will test it by throwing on a mound, with a ball, Wednesday.
