2008-03-31 23:14:00 7 Mexican-born Texas death row inmates lose at Supreme Court 7 Mexican-born inmates on Texas' death row lost their bids for appeal Monday before the U.S. Supreme Court, following the court's ruling last week that another Mexican-born inmate's case couldn't be reopened despite an order from President Bush. Justices last week voted 6-3 against hearing the case of Jose Medellin, convicted of the rape-slayings of 2 Houston teenagers 15 years ago, saying Bush overstepped his authority by trying to order Texas to reopen Medellin's case. That decision removed a legal hurdle blocking Medellin's execution. An international court ruled in 2004 that the convictions of Medellin and 50 other Mexicans on death row around the United States violated the 1963 Vienna Convention, which provides that people arrested abroad should have access to their home country's consular officials. The International Court of Justice, also known as the world court, said the M...
Medellin - Urgent Action/Update
2008-03-31 23:09:00 Dear friends, In its ruling on March 23, a majority of Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court decided in the case Medellin v. Texas that a binding decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requiring judicial remedies for consular rights violations in the USA is not enforceable in the domestic courts. Although issued under the authority of the Optional Protocol to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the ICJ Statute and the UN Charter, the ICJ decision in Avena and Other Mexican Nationals is not enforceable domestically because the authorizing treaties had not been transformed into domestic law by Congress (even though each treaty was signed by the US and ratified by the Senate). As a result of this failure to enforce binding treaty obligations, U.S. citizens abroad may be deprived of access to consular assistance upon arrest. Medellin - Take Action!
2008-03-29 22:12:00 Dear friends, In its ruling on Tuesday March 23, a majority of Justices of the US Supreme Court stated in their opinion for the ruling in the case Medellin v. Texas that the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations was not legally binding for the courts of the federal states as its regulations had not been transformed into domestic law by the Congress (although signed by the US and ratified by the Senate). This may cause major problems for all non-American nationals who, after a arrest in the United States, now run the risk of not receiving any consular assistance. However, if other nations follow suit US citizens abroad may equally be deprived of consular assistance upon arrest. Read Dallas Morning News article: http://www.dallasnews.com/share-dcontent/dws/dn/opinion/editori-als/stories/DN-scotus_27edi.ART-.State.Edition1.161c416.html There is a solution: The US Congress needs to adopt the Vienna Convention as domesti...
Medellin - Stellungnahme von amnesty international
2008-03-29 21:53:00 March 27 USA: Amnesty International USA: Government must ensure meaningful judicial review of Mexican death row cases 27 March 2008 AI Index: AMR 51/025/2008 On 25 March 2008, in a case involving the USA's obligation to comply with judgments of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of the State of Texas and against a Mexican national on death row there. The Supreme Court has effectively passed the buck to the other branches of government to act to ensure that the USA meets its international obligations. Amnesty International urges them to do so. The 6-3 ruling, Medelln v. Texas, concerns the case of Jos Medelln, a Mexican national and 1 of 5 people sentenced to death for the murder of 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman and Elizabeth Pena, 16, in Houston in 1993. All 5 were teenagers at the time of the crime. 2 of them who were 17, Raul Villareal and Efrain Perez, had their death sentences commuted to life i...

Medellin: A Road Map to a U.N. Dictatorship
2007-10-11 21:14:00 The Medellin case has apparent implications for the office of the President, through his foreign policy discretion, to evade Congress to impose any ruling the world court might make.Justices Ginsberg, Kennedy, and Souter have already written both concurrent and dissenting opinions citing international law and the authority of the Hague in matters of national (not international) interests. Here's the road map to the end of democracy in America:The Bush position is that when the Senate has adopted a non-self-enforcing treaty, the treaty becomes self-enforcing if: "1. The World Court issues a ruling under the treaty in a case in which the United States accepts jurisdiction, and 2. The President then, exercising his foreign policy discretion, decides that the World Court order must be implemented."- Medellin v. Texas brief. The position of Medellin's lawyers is even broader, that a World Court ruling is sufficient in itself. If this were to become binding precedent by the Supreme Court, ...
Medellin Madness
2007-10-11 16:09:00 Why would President Bush suddenly want to enforce a ruling from the International Court of Justice involving Mexico? (If you don't know about the horrendous nature of this brutal case involving the rape and murder of two teenage girls by a Mexican national, go here to read more)I just finished reading the amicus brief for Medellin v. Texas, and I'm thoroughly disgusted. President Bush has intervened in this case citing obligations we have to the 1963 Vienna Convention, a treaty which the United States no longer recognizes as having authority over its autonomy since 2003 when President Bush withdrew the U.S. from it.Although some statutes are still in effect for another 6 years, why would President Bush now want to follow some ICJ ruling after ignoring the court's rulings hundreds of times himself? The answer is regrettably simple: He's got something cooking with Mexico. The question is, "what's cooking?"I've been trying to figure that out. President Bush needs to give Mexico...

Fake Movie Trailer for Medellin (from HBO’s Entourage) Released
2007-07-16 10:44:00 HBO has posted the full length, fake trailer to Medellin the dream project of Vincent Chase, the lead character in HBO’s awesome series Entourage. I love that Billy Walsh is directing (anyone else think he’s modeled after Vincent Gallo?) and that the whole thing is in Spanish. The fat Vincent Chase looks kind of funny too. I kind of wish they would actually make this movie, it looks pretty cool. This also isn’t the first time that HBO has created some fake advertising for one of Chase’s projects. Check out Entourage on HBO if you haven’t already. Great show. Click here to view the trailer. Bookmark to:

2007-06-25 14:26:00 Author: Eric Subject: Radio Broadcasts Light and Hope into Medellin, ColombiaPosted: Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:26 am (GMT -4) Radio Broadcasts Light and Hope into Medellin, Colombia Colombia (MNN) -- Medellin is Colombia's second largest city, often associated with heavy drug trade and guerilla influence. According to the Colombian census of 2005, 23.8 percent are married, 22.3 percent live in cohabitation, and more than 44 percent of the population consists of single women. The number of violent deaths in Medellin is high, and the most affected are youth. Trans World Radio is combating this dark picture with its "City Lights" programs. The plan is to connect churches and individuals throughout the United States with Latin American churches and radio stations to bring God's principles into thousands of lives. "City Lights" allows churches to choose a city and sponsor a package of five to eight TWR programs designed specifically for different groups wi...
