Three Blizzard Meditations

Meditations on Death: Fear
2010-10-25 11:56:00 We do not do a good job of talking about death and dying in Western culture, especially here in the U.S. Perhaps this is part of why we have so many hang-ups on the subject. This series is designed to stimulate thought and discussion on the difficult subject of death. If atheists view death as an ending of the self, the termination of everything we call "I," does this mean it is something to be feared? For some of us, the idea of returning to nothingness does indeed provoke fear. Others find the idea of nothingness too abstract to elicit strong emotion. And still others, including me, lost our fear of nothingness somewhere along the path of life, even as we developed new and far more terrifying fears.I was recently asked on Formspring about my views of death and the degree to which I feared my own death. In composing my brief response, I was struck by just how much my views have changed over the course of my life. As a child and well into my teen years, the prospect of death terrif...
Meditations on Death: Prelude
2010-09-26 15:09:00 I don't write very many posts without knowing whether I'll actually put them up on the blog. This is one of them. I wrote this after hearing about Mojoey's (Deep Thoughts) recent loss of his father. I found myself thinking that death is one of those things that really needs more attention in Western culture. We don't like to think about it, and as a result, rarely discuss it. I cannot help thinking that this reluctance has many adverse effects.I'm every bit as guilty as anyone in not wanting to think about death. I know I'll die, and I know everyone close to me will die. But I tend to sweep thoughts like that aside. No point dwelling on something so unpleasant, I tell myself. I've got too much living to do, and I don't want to get bogged down with such thoughts. But in the back of my mind, there is an awareness that I am not doing myself any favors by pushing thoughts of death away. It means I'll be less prepared when I inevitably lose more people close to me. It will likel...
34 Psalms in 34 Days: Psalm 33
2009-06-27 15:06:00 “Shout for joy IN the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright” (Psalm 33:1). “The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue” (Psalm 33:16-17). “Our soul waits for the ...

Meditations on God?s Nature and Existence and the Origins of the Universe
2009-04-14 03:58:00 In two previous posts ?God?s Omnipotence and the Rules of the Game of Existence? and ?Nothing can come out of nothing - or can it?? I attempted to tackle questions on apparent contradictions of God?s nature and powers. Now I shall try to elaborate on these issues however under a different set of circumstances and with the aid of the French philosopher René Descartes.First of all, we humans are firmly situated in both time and space and are not fully aware of the consequences of our actions at any given time. For example, we have certain wills (or desires, needs), but the results are usually separated in space and time. I will (or have a sensation) that I am hungry; depending on the level of hunger my response can happen quickly or can be delayed, at least for a while. Nonetheless, it is absolutely necessary to satisfy this need for survival and the outcome will have to be food at some point of time. The question is not whether or not I am going to eat, but when.On the other hand, I ...

Brief Points From Daniel
2008-10-28 20:00:00 Good thoughts below from Warren Berkley: If you preach, teach, or just talk to people about biblical truth, you well know there are some things people don’t want to hear–undeniable truths people do not dispute, but don’t really want to hear. I’ve just started teaching the book of Daniel and I made these two points in the ...

Of Moths, Rust & Market Plunges
2008-09-30 03:39:00 Today’s a good day to remind ourselves of Jesus’ encouragement. “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where ...

20 Resolutions From James
2008-09-28 13:05:00 Looking to have a God-glorifying, Biblically-centered week? Consider these 20 resolutions suggested by Sinclair Ferguson. James 1:5 To ask God for wisdom to speak with a single mind James 1:9-10 To boast only in the exaltation of Christ James 1:13 To set a watch over my mouth James 1:19 To be constantly quick to hear, slow to speak James 2:1-4 ...

Where Religion Meets The Road (2)
2008-09-27 00:52:00 We recently looked at the first half of James 1:27. Take a moment to refresh yourself on its message. I don’t know of any way to boil James’ statement down any simpler than with one word: CARE. Real disciples of Christ care. The religion of Almighty God is founded upon care. Pure and ...

Elihu Proclaims God?s Majesty
2008-09-14 12:16:00 “At this also my heart trembles and leaps out of its place. Keep listening to the thunder of his voice and the rumbling that comes from his mouth. Under the whole heaven he lets it go, and his lightning to the corners of the earth. After it his voice roars; he thunders with his majestic voice, and he does not restrain the lightnings ...

Good, Clean Godlessness
2008-09-13 20:08:00 Good thoughts from Gary Henry… For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:3) What is the difference between a “godly” life and one that is “godless”? Are the godly those who live “good, clean lives,” and the godless all ...

A Quick Way To Make Your Religion Worthless
2008-09-10 20:40:00 Carefully read James 1:26. Looking for a way to make your religion worthless? Here’s one option. Don’t control your tongue today. Say whatever you want to say, to whomever you want to say it, in whatever way you’d like. Don’t think before you talk. Don’t hold back. Let it fly! Just make ...

Don?t Deceive Yourself
2008-09-08 20:35:00 Today’s thought is taken from James 1:22. That’s not hard to understand, is it? Yesterday’s encouragement was to deliberately discipline ourselves to “receive with meekness the implanted word” which is able to save our souls. The warning that follows is natural and logical: once you receive the word, make sure you’re a ...

A Filth-Free Week Of Receiving The Word
2008-09-08 02:13:00 James 1:21 forms an excellent theme verse for the new week, don’t you think? It can be broken down into two parts. Part 1 Whatever you say, whatever you do, wherever you go, put away all of the filth. Don’t wade into it today. Don’t invite it into your life this week. Do whatever ...

Enough Said
2008-09-06 15:06:00 Why not challenge yourself with modeling James 1:19-20 as a living commentary this weekend? You don’t need me to elaborate on those inspired words, do you? What the Spirit of God meant, the Spirit of God said, and we can understand exactly what he means. Let’s step up to the challenge.

Being Good Gifts
2008-08-22 17:22:00 Take a moment to read James 1:16-18. Remind yourself throughout the day of James’ revelation: every good and perfect gift comes from above. Watch Out For The Bait
2008-08-20 20:33:00 Having meditated on James 1:13 yesterday, we turn our attention to James 1:14 today. The figure used by James is pretty easy to understand, isn’t it? The Proper Use Of Our Freedom
2008-07-04 12:04:00 One of my favorite scriptures concerning the freedom that is available in Jesus is from Paul’s letter to the Galatian saints. Take a look at Galatians 5:1. Then, Galatians 5:13. Some simply-stated, yet challengingly-applied marching orders for the citizen of God’s kingdom today: Stand firm. Remember who you are. Never forget the price which was paid to ...

2008-06-30 18:15:00 Independence Day is this Friday. What does it mean to you? What will be on your mind? To many, the 4th means charcoal, hamburgers, hot dogs, a day off of work, and fireworks. In Need Of Wisdom
2008-06-28 12:30:00 It can be hard to admit that you don’t have all the answers. It can be disheartening to acknowledge that you’re not sure. Some Of Self
2008-06-25 13:51:00 Yet He found me; I beheld Him Bleeding on th’accursed tree, And my wistful heart said faintly, “Some of self, and some of Thee.” Double-mindedness.
