The Mediterranean Diet for Weight Loss
2009-01-13 11:06:00
The Mediterranean Diet offers a healthy, tasty, aromatic array of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, wild greens, fish, olive oil, and red wine while sharply reducing intake of milk products, meat, processed foods, sweets, and caffeine. The MD helps prevent cardiovascular disorders, reduce the incidence of cancer and diabetes, and–it appears–curb neurodegenerative processes. It is strange, ...

A Mediterranean Diet Means Healthy And Tasteful Weight Loss
2008-12-01 08:07:00
A Mediterranean Diet Means Healthy And Tasteful Weight Loss was written by Terje Ellingsen from 11-weight-loss.netSome weight loss companies have used "The Mediterranean diet" as a name for a diet consisting mainly of food that are eaten by the population of the Mediterranean countries. By eating such foods as one of the ways to increase metabolism in addition to calorie counting and exercise, people will lose weight fairly fast. Quite frankly, the variations in dieting culture among these countries and even within regions of each country is too broad to call it a specitic diet. So, rather than talking about a pure diet, it is more appropriate to call it the Mediterranean-style diet. Because even with all this variation in food culture and dieting practice, their dietary pattern has something in common:.The Mediterranean people eat much fruit, vegetables, potatoes, beans, nuts, seeds, bread and other cereals. The protein they eat is mostly fish and poultry but in pretty low amounts ...
The Mediterranean Diet and Heart Disease
2008-10-17 09:13:00
The cardio-protective properties in many of the foods consumed in countries like Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain and France gave rise to the term “The Mediterranean Diet”. The benefits of this style of eating have been found through epidemiological studies which show a particularly low incidence of heart disease in the Mediterranean Basin. The Mediterranean Diet ...

Mediterranean diet in a birthday party can chant a magic spell on your gues
2008-07-17 07:22:00
Well I just found something really interesting and couldn't resist myself to share this with you. As this blog is a birthday blog I thought of posting this here as it will benefit you when it comes to birthday recipe. I just found the web buzzing with something -- mediterranean diet. Most of us were with a wrong notion that the lower in fat a diet is, the better it is for our health.Modern research denies it, belying the long-held belief that low-fat diets are best!As usual I was in the net the last night when I suddenly landed on a page that says researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, carried out a study with 322 obese subjects. The outcome of the research was that the so-called Mediterranean diet (a diet characterized by heavy fats, fruits and veggies) beats out the low-fat diet when it comes to health benefits. So guys, when it comes to choosing a birthday recipe next time there's no harm picking the high-fat Mediterranean diet. Just keep in mind that recent s...

Alicante, a vibrant Mediterranean getaway
2008-05-30 18:26:00
Alicante is such a charming Mediterranean city and a popular tourist getaway being the center of Costa Blanca. After exploring Elche in the morning, I decided to breeze through Alicante in the afternoon before proceeding back to Valencia. Ever since I was a child, Alicante had been very familiar to us since we had a granduncle, a retired diplomat, who lived there. Sadly, he passed away last year even before I could meet him.The capital of Alicante (Alacant) Province, the city was described by the Valencian author Joan Fuster as the most pleasant city in the Valencian Region, ?the city you would choose to live in if you had to exchange your village for a town.? Its more than 3,000 years of history was evident in its rich architectural heritage.I immediately noticed the Castillo de Sta. Barbara perched on top of Monte Tossal. There are buses that take you up the hill to visit the castle. The city hall of Alicante is a gem of Baroque civil architecture. Equally impressive are Alicante?...
A taste of the Mediterranean from Malta
2008-05-23 00:00:00
Even seasoned Maltese diners will be surprised by the range and quality of dishes on offer at Rubino in Valletta.Proprietor Julian Sammut has made it his mission to unearth the best of local cuisine and serve it at exceptional standards. The soups, pastas, meat and bakes at the converted confectionary make it especially bustling during lunch hours, but Tuesday to Friday evenings offer more time to savour gorgeous specials like fettucini with snails and saffron or boiled gammon with stewed apple mustard. The pasta with rabbit sauce (fenkata) and ricotta-based dessert cassata also come highly recommended.Maltese cuisine is generally quite similar to Italian food, but incorporates aspects of other Mediterranean countries too.On Sundays even further-flung influences can be found, with many locals professing a penchant for the British roast since times of colonial rule!

Mediterranean Diet - What is it?
2008-05-22 04:51:00
Well, to begin with, there isn't really any one Mediterranean Diet! There's a whole swag of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The basic Mediterranean Diet has common characteristics even if the sourrounding countries differ in culture, language and recipes to some extent.* an extensive intake of fruits, vegetables, bread and cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds* olive oil is a source of mono-unsaturated fat - common to the Mediterranean area* some dairy products, fish and even poultry are consumed in sparing to moderate amounts, and some red meat(not much)* eggs are consumed in low to moderate amount say 1 to 4 eggs a week* fortunately wine is acceptable but in low quantities ie. 1 - 3 glasses per dayA good question to ask is - Does a Mediterranean-style diet follow American Heart Association dietary guidelines?Mediterranean-style- diets are often close to US dietary guidelines, but not exactly.People who follow the average Mediterranean diet eat less saturated fat tha...

A View Of The Mediterranean Diet Pyramid
2008-05-22 04:48:00
The food pyramid we’re most familiar with is based on portion size and does not take into account the different qualities of food sources. It’s assumed that everyone knows that all processing done to food serves to make it more harmful. Unfortunately common knowledge and common practice often do not go hand in hand. As people do learn that whole food choices offer health benefits over the more typical processed food choices, they are seeking out suggestions for what foods to put together into a dietary plan. The Mediterranean diet is increasing in popularity because it is not based on popularized fads but rather a model which comes from literally thousands of years of use. The Mediterranean diet is inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of the Mediterranean area, particularly Italy, Greece, and Spain. Understanding how the Mediterranean Diet differs from the typical American diet can help us to improve our eating habits and enjoy improved health through enjoyable dietary ch...

Perfectly Cooked Fish, plus an Easy Mediterranean Recipe
2008-05-04 22:10:00
I?m amazed to see that it?s already 3 pm on a Sunday; I?ve been meaning to post for two days. But I made the mistake of taking my (new! I?m so excited) laptop computer to a local coffeeshop on Friday to ?work? while my babysitter watched Nick. I ended up scanning the newspapers and ordering more and more coffee, waiting for a crowd of boisterous students to leave. There was no sound once they left, save for the hiss of the espresso machines, and, distracted by my thoughts and the tuneless whistling of one of the workers, I accomplished next to nothing. I ended up contemplating the small vase of rather exhausted flowers on my table, then packed my bags and left, restless and post-less.My intended subject is still on my mind, and the photos still on my hard drive, so now, refreshed from two days of beautiful weather, some rest, and lots of cooking, I?m ready to write about fish. This isn't the fish dish I mentioned the other day (that one's coming), but is instead one that came toget...
Jávea in Costa Blanca and more from Spain's Mediterranean coast
2008-05-03 15:03:00
Jávea (Xàbia in Valencian) is a coastal town in the province of Alicante, Spain. It's about an hour from Valencia and we went there for our first out-of-town excursion. There was a fiesta in town today since every May 3, Jávea celebrates the feast of the Nazareno. It's the day when the image of the Nazareno is returned from the San Bartolome Church to the Calvary Chapel. But we weren't able to watch the procession since it was still in the evening and we would be back in Valencia by then. The streets of the town were also decorated with bright and colorful crosses made of flowers since Spain celebrates the Cruces de Mayo (Creus de maig in Valencian) also on May 3. I enjoyed walking around the narrow streets of the town since they gave you the feeling of age.Listed as a National Historic Monument of Spain in 1931, the fortress-church Church of San Bartolome (Església de Sant Bertomeu) dates back to the late 14th Century and is one of the finest examples of Late Valencian Gothic arc...

Costa de Valencia along the Mediterranean
2008-04-30 12:11:00
Valencia is one of the major cities found along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. In fact, it is said to be a prototype of big Mediterranean cities which are fertile, productive, luminous and commercially astute. It would be a pity if we did not check out its beaches. So we visited Playa de Levante.Levante Beach is just a few minutes from the city center. In fact, there is a Metro station to it. It's right beside the port yet it remains clean and pollution free. Paseo de Neptuno (Passeig de Neptu in Valencian) is a walkway along the beach known for its row of restaurants. It's a relaxing stroll especially on warm afternoons. As much as we would have wanted to swim, at 20 degrees Celsius, the temperature was just too low for tropical denizens like us. So we were content hanging out enjoying the Mediterranean breeze. Before leaving, we had more horchata at an heladeria (ice cream store). This time, it was horchata con helado (with ice cream). I spent an additional 1? for the scoop of...

Tip! Prevent any further damage. The diets called ‘Appetite reducers’ attempt to decrease your appetite by artificial means in order to prevent any additional weight gains. Spices - Mediterranean Diet's Key To Good Health
2008-04-10 22:18:00
By Dr Keith ScottOver the past decade much has been made of the so-called Mediterranean Diet. Epidemiological evidence shows that people living in Mediterranean countries like France, Greece and Italy have lower incidences of heart disease relative to the USA, UK and more northerly European nations. Various hypotheses have been put forward in an attempt to explain why their diets should afford protection against cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions. Two factors that have been given credit for the healthy attributes of this diet are red wine and olive oil. However, until recently one of the most important factors has been overlooked – the consumption in this region of considerable quantities of culinary herbs and spices that are all rich in antioxidants and other important disease-preventing compounds. The people of the Mediterranean countries, when following their traditional diets, tend to eat less animal-derived saturated fats and more plant-based unsaturated ...

Mediterranean Meatballs with Couscous, Chickpeas & Herb Salad
2008-04-03 03:56:00
Sometimes a food blogger feels compelled to post a recipe, even if she does not quite know what else to say, besides ?ta-da!?I planned the last week of meals carefully; not so tonight. By the time the light had gone, the evening was underway and my supper ideas were scarce. I headed to the deep freezer, peered in, and found an excess of frozen ground beef. What to do with that? Something quick, no doubt, but in the best possible taste for a fifteen minute (could I cut it to ten?) preparation. I pulled a pack from the frozen depths and headed to the microwave for a quick defrost.Meatballs suddenly seemed just the thing: undemanding, but a step up from burgers or meatloaf. Once I had gathered what I needed from the pantry and produce drawer?raisins, couscous, a half a container of leftover fresh mint, and a few more bits & pieces?and Nick was playing in another room with Kevin, the kitchen felt transformed to a haven of plain dealing, the tile floor, smooth counters, and utensils ...
