The Goat’s Milk Alternative Amidst the Melamine Scare
2008-10-31 13:36:00
With all this Melamine scare on milk formula, and getting another brand on the list of those that are found to be positive every so often, what mother would not be concerned. When I read from this AskDrSears.com article that goat’s milk is so much better than cow’s milk, I just knew I had to try this local brand, Milk Star’s fresh goat’s milk. I just chanced upon it when I was doing my regular grocery shopping.   Read on from AskDrSears.com: Although the mineral content of goat’s milk and cow’s milk is generally similar, goat’s milk contains 13 percent more calcium, 25 percent more vitamin B-6, 47 percent more vitamin A, 134 percent more potassium, and three times more niacin. It is also four times higher in copper. Goat’s milk also contains 27 percent more of the antioxidant selenium than cow’s milk. Cow’s milk contains five times as much vitamin B-12 as goat’s milk and ten times as much folic acid (12 mcg. in cow’s mi...

Melamine In China Baby Milk Powder -- Whoops Sorry.
2008-09-16 21:39:00
ImageThief is just out with a great post on the Sanlu melamine crisis. The post does an amazing job giving a history of China's food safety problems, dissecting the current one, and discussing in real world terms Fonterra (the New Zealand company involved in a joint venture with Sanlu) has handled it, and how Fonterra should have handled it. The post is entitled, "Melamine in Sanlu milk powder? Now that's a crisis!" and it is a must read. UPDATE: Peter Ford over at the Christian Science Monitor did an excellent story, entitled, "Behind bad baby milk, an ethical gap in China's business." I know this is not what non-lawyers want to hear, but unless and until any and all companies tied in with incidents like this are forced to pay by way of huge court verdicts, this sort of thing is going to continue.

Warn of Melamine Tableware
2007-11-25 10:19:00
They may look good on the dining table, but the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP)- Malaysia - has warned the public against using melamine tableware. CAP president S. M. Mohamed Idris said studies conducted abroad revealed that melamine tableware contained substances that were hazardous to health. ?Many are not aware that melamine melts when exposed to high temperatures, causing parts of the substance to enter our body along with the food. ?Regular ingestion of melamine can lead to cancer, skin allergies and blindness,? he said at a press conference here. Melamine, also known as thermo set plastic, is made of urea, an organic compound, and formaldehyde, a chemical widely used to manufacture household products. Mohamed Idris said melamine tableware was popular and commonly used to serve hot food in households, restaurants and food stalls. ?We are calling on consumers to refrain from using melamine tableware and use safer tableware made from glass or ceramic,? he said. He added th...

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. ? The FDA announced today that a U.S. company?Tembec BTLSR Inc. of Toledo, Ohio?has been identified as producing a melamine-contaminated ingredient used in domestic livestock feed as well as in domestic and exported fish feed. This is a separate contamination from the nationwide pet food recall that began March 16, in which the melamine-contaminated ingredient was imported from Chinese manufactures. Tembec has used the contaminated ingredient as a binding agent in two of its commercial fish feeds, AquaBond and Aqua-Tec II, intended for domestic use as well as for export. The company also shipped the contaminated binding ingredient to Uniscope, Inc. of Johnstown, Colo., for use in domestic livestock feed, Xtra-Bond, for cattle, goats and sheep. The FDA has advised that the contaminated fish feeds be recalled, but has not advised that the contaminated livestock feeds be recalled because they contain lower levels of melamine and melamine-related compounds, and therefor...

Melamine, US manufacturers get into the act
2007-05-31 04:56:00
Ahem. For any of you who thought that the problem was limited to not-so-well-patrolled imported foodstuff, check this out.The FDA alerted feed manufacturers that ingredients containing melamine and related compounds were found in products made by Tembec BTLSR Inc. of Toledo, Ohio, and used by Uniscope Inc. of Johnstown, Colo. Tembec makes two products, AquaBond and Aqua-Tec II, which it distributes for Uniscope. The products are used in fish feed. Uniscope also makes a product for livestock feed called Xtra-Bond, and it uses ingredients produced by Tembec. The FDA advised feed manufacturers and others not to use the products and to contact the two manufacturers.source It is probably a good thing that I have a pair of looming deadlines, otherwise I might say something I would regret in the outloud voice. And we wouldn't want that.

Fish on U.S. Fish Farms Fed Melamine-Contaminated Feed; FDA Discovers Conta
2007-05-10 14:17:00
FOR MORE INFORMATION Tom McPheronPhone: 847-285-6781e-mail: tmcpheron@avma.orgSCHAUMBURG, Ill. ? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the contaminated wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China?associated with the deaths of at least 16 dogs and cats and the recall of hundreds of dog and cat food brands?was mislabeled and was really wheat flour contaminated with melamine and melamine-related products. David Acheson, M.D., assistant commissioner for food protection, Office of the Commissioner at the FDA, said that investigators believe that melamine, which is high in nitrogen, was added to the wheat flour. As a result, protein level test results on the flour were consistent with those of wheat gluten. This discovery does not change recent pet food recalls or livestock restrictions, but rather just expands the understanding of the ongoing pet food and livestock feed contamination and investigation. The FDA also announced today that a portion of...
Melamine and Cyanuric Acid Interaction May Play Part in Illness and Death f
2007-05-07 13:58:00
FOR MORE INFORMATION Tom McPheronPhone: 847-285-6781e-mail: tmcpheron@avma.orgSCHAUMBURG, Ill. ? Tests conducted on contaminated pet food and necropsies from affected animals have resulted in a new theory to explain how animals are being adversely affected by contaminated pet foods. A chemical reaction between melamine and cyanuric acid is suspected of forming crystals and blocking kidney function. The investigation into contaminated pet food has focused on melamine contamination of ingredients imported from China, such as wheat gluten, rice protein concentrate and corn gluten (imported into South Africa). It is now believed that cyanuric acid, as well as melamine, has been found in urine samples from animals that died. Analysis of the crystals in the kidneys of affected animals have revealed that they are approximately 70 percent cyanuric acid and 30 percent melamine, and are extremely insoluble. Furthermore, tests mixing melamine and cyanuric acid in samples of cat urine resulted...
