My Melanoma Saga
2008-05-14 03:35:00
For any of you that read my blog on a regular basis you already know that I've been diagnosed with Melanoma (skin cancer) twice. The first time was really scary as I had Stage III Melanoma, several surgeries and a year of chemo treatment. Well....today I found out I have Melanoma again. Last time was just a very shallow lesion that didn't require any special surgery. This time it's a little worse and it sounds like I'll be having at least one surgery maybe two. The good news is from what they are telling me this isn't as serious as the first time I had it so hopefully the treatments won't be too bad.I share this with my readers for a couple of reasons. First and foremost I think that if I can help just one person by making them aware of the dangers involved with skin cancer then it's worth sharing my personal experiences. Two it helps me deal with the emotional battle that cancer plays on someone. Wish me luck....or better yet say a prayer for me and my family.
Regional Nuclear War Would Affect Entire Globe
2008-04-08 06:03:00
Devastation of a regional nuclear war would be far from confined to the countries that started it. Plants and animals, including humans, would be endangered by a global ozone hole that would result and persist for years after all the bombs were exhausted, a new study suggests. The layer of ozone high up in the Earth’s ...

Straight Talk About Melanoma
2008-03-10 16:01:00
MUCH ADO ABOUT MCCAIN’S MELANOMAI can say this because I’ve been there and done that. So has John McCain.  But the press thinks it is this huge deal.  It is and it isn’t. Michael Cooper, author of this hit piece, is obviously not really all that aware of melanoma.  He should have contacted a melanoma survivor.  We could have given him all the information he needs to know.“…The melanoma removed in 2000 was Stage IIa on a standard classification that makes Stage IV the most serious. For Stage IIa melanoma, the survival rate 10 years after diagnosis ...

A Little Different Look At Melanoma Treatment!
2007-11-13 00:00:00
Melanoma, the deadliest of the skin cancers, has been at the fore front of treatment innovation for some time. Scientists have long believed that, given a way to rev up a person’s natural immune system, melanoma could successfully be fought off without more aggressive types of intervention. A new look at this has scientists peering through ...
Mother Jailed, Put On Trial for Curing Her Son of Melanoma
2007-11-04 09:54:00
I was reading this after one of the ladies posted about this today on our forum. Have you guys in the US, heard about this?Mother Jailed, Put On Trial for Curing Her Son of MelanomaVery freaky... what do you think?*update*I just wanted to say I found an article with a different perspective here. I did mention it in the comments but the link didn't work so thought it best to add here.I also found a few records of traffic violations dating from 2004 for a Laurie Jessop born in 1961 and a Chad Jessop born in 1990 so there does appear to be a 17 year old Chad Jessop in Orange County. I also found records of a family court battle between a Laurie Jessop and a Markus Jessop whom have a child dating back from 2003 which seems to have been revived this past August. So it may be true, or at least these identities exist, maybe someone should try to contact them to see if it actually happened?

In this ever blossoming market of customized bling bling for cellphones, hideous designs are becoming more prevalent and as of now this one takes the cake. I read several article about malignant melanoma skin cancer. This skin cancer is very danger condition and have high mortality range in patient. Melanoma arise from melanocytes, this cell give the pigment or color to the skin by the melanin. Melanoma can appear in the beginning like a mole. The person with high exposure to the sun, UV, lightly pigmented skinor family history of skin cancer increase the probability to have this condition. This skin cancer also is related to genetics factors. This skin cancer can spread from the skin to other part or organ of the body.To diagnostic this cancer quickly and reduce the mortality is very important continuously examine your skin and look any change in mole or pigmented area. Several article talk about the ?ABCDE? mnemonic to prevent and detect this skin cancer. This mnemonic include several change in a mole for example.A- Asymmetrical mole or asymmetrical shape skin lesion.B- Border irregular in a mole or skin lesion.C- Color: this skin ...
Malignant Melanoma Treatment Works On Immune Cells, Not The Cancer
2007-09-07 05:31:00
A new study shows that an important drug used in the treatment of malignant melanoma has little effect on the melanoma cells themselves. Instead, it activates immune-system cells to fight the disease. The drug, called interferon alpha (IFNa), is used to clean up microscopic tumor cells that may remain in the body following surgery for the disease. It is the only drug approved for this purpose.Researchers say that these findings underscore the need to develop ways to make melanoma cells more vulnerable to the drug, or to overcome the block within the cells that prevents them from responding to it.The study showed that melanoma cells taken directly from patients, as well as those grown in the laboratory, respond poorly to IFNa, even when the drug is given at very high doses, while immune cells respond well to the same substance.Click here to see the rest of this article in Medical News Todaypermalink TechnoratiPhilippine Nursing http://Philippinenursing.blogsp-ot.com
Bernanke's Speech - No Cure for SubPrime Market Melanoma

Bernanke's Speech - No Cure for SubPrime Market MelanomaIf you expected the announcement of a Fed Funds rate cut, you are probably adisappointed residential housing speculator. If you expected some straight talkabout the mortgage backed securities mess, you are likely to be a somewhatsatisfied investor or trader. What you may have missed is the ongoing reality expressed in recent data, suchas GDP, Jobless Claims, Personal Income/Expense, NAPM, Factory Ordersand Consumer Sentiment/Confidence.In my view, these data reflect what we have been stating to readers throughoutthis "credit crisis". The stock market's downturn is a normal correction in a Bullmarket. It's not the beginning of a depression or recession. It sure could be ifthe Street doesn't or isn't willing to take the cure.Nothing has changed dramatically in Peoria. It's still pretty normal out here, beginning 50 miles away from lower Manhattan. We still have low unemployment, the consumer is still spending at a normal pace,...
Thicker Skin Cancer Diagnosis: Distance To The Physician
2007-08-24 17:00:00
The farther patients travel to reach the physician who diagnoses their melanoma, the more likely they are to have thicker skin cancer at diagnosis, according to a report in the August issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. “Survival for patients with melanoma is dependent on stage at diagnosis. As Breslow [depth of ...

Early life sun exposure and skin cancer
2007-06-11 03:18:00
Skin cancers often contain different gene mutations, but just how these mutations contribute to the cause of melanomas has been a mystery. A new clue comes from scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Their research indicates that early life sun exposure, from birth to 20 years ...
Adult sunburns on the rise and skin cancer

Over a million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed every year in the United States. Among those who are developing skin cancer at higher rates are adults. This fact seems a bit out of line to me; as a mother I am constantly slathering my kids in sunblock. I carry a tube in my ...
Protein May Be Linked To Melanoma Recurrence
2007-06-04 09:00:00
Higher levels of a protein called S-100 in melanoma patients may correlate with a higher risk of the disease returning, say researchers. The study tested serum samples from 103 patients treated with high-dose interferon an average of eight years prior. When the researchers examined levels of S-100 in the samples, they found that the higher ...

Antigens recognized by T helper (Th) cells in the context of MHC class II molecules have vaccine potential against cancer and infectious agents. We have described previously a melanoma patient’s HLA-DR7–restricted Th cell clone recognizing an antigen, which is shared among melanoma and glioma cells derived from various patients. Here, this antigen was cloned using ...

2007-04-16 10:48:00
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute's Cutaneous Oncology Program has been recognized as one of the first top ten Melanoma Centers of Excellence named by the Melanoma Hope Network. The network works to recognize melanoma treatment centers across the United States that offer exceptional care, knowledge and compassion to patients diagnosed with advanced melanoma. ?  "We are particularly pleased to receive this designation because it recognizes the contributions and collaborations of all the members of the Cutaneous Program - dermatologists, pathologists, surgeons and medical and radiation oncologists - that have to work together in a Melanoma Center of Excellence," said Dr. Vernon Sondak, program leader of the Cutaneous Oncology Program.
