Of course, the ear is still king, but there are several ways to examine a melodic line. The approach I’m outlining today is counterpoint. Counterpoint is simply the movement of two or more melodic lines together. The lines should stand on their own, that is, they will sound good and make some sense played separately. And while counterpoint lines do create harmony, that is incidental to the independent lines. They way the lines interact should be seen as the creation of tension and release. (more…)

I want to show something unique, a very old Waldir Calmon release and the first album issued by the legendary label Radio in the LP (10-Inch) format.This is Waldir Calmon e Seu Conjunto - Ritmos Melodicos Nr. 1 (1952), for Radio, a unique work of Waldir Calmon, really different from what we are used to hear on most of his albums. Most of the 8 songs of Ritmos Melodicos follow the "Dancante" formula, but there are nice surprises to check. I had never seen anything like this before and was amazed by how efficient it was for finding the titles/words of compositions that I did not know the name of (or recall) -only the music or ?melodic contours?. Remembering a ?tune? and ?not the words? seems to one of our global plights as human beings. This dilemma is caused by the hemispheric division of the brain and us not being able to re-connect them simultaneously to retrieve the whole of the complete thought, or in this case the words/title we associate with the music.
