Books I Want to Read (but have yet to be written):Memoirs of Cheney, Rumsfe
2009-05-25 09:12:00
After a week in which Dick Cheney, “an unpopular former vice president” (as the Washington Times styled him) faced of in a type of debate with “a popular sitting president” (as the same paper styled Barack Obama), the less popular and more maligned (at least in the MSM) man “won, hands down.”  Even media ...

Memoirs 3: From boy to man (?)
2008-05-28 04:07:00
After finishing school in 1960, I started the same year a commercial apprenticeship. At that time this was the system in Switzerland when you went into Business Administration. A company hired you for 3 years, you worked 3 days per week and you went 2 days per week to commercial school. I enjoyed the working part as one went to stay in each department of the company. About the school, well....! Anyway, in 1963 I passed my examination and received the "Federal Certificate of Professional Capacity". With a grade of 2.4. This was a disappointment for my parents. Because my cousin, the year before, got a grade 1.1 and if you have grades from 1 to 1.2, your name is published in the newspaper. The fault, of course, was not mine but the school's. Which I did attend only sporadically. So, at the age of 19, I was all set for the professional life. And I was looking forward to it. There was just one small disturbance. The Army.Today, things have changed. You can "escape" from your obligation ...

Review: Makoy's Memoirs of a Certified Blogger
2008-05-19 15:00:00
I have reviewed a few personal blogs since I started offering free reviews in November 2007. They are probably the most difficult to review since they aren't usually focused on a single niche. This week I review a personal blog from a blogger in the Philippines who apparently will be moving to Singapore.Web Site: Makoy's Memoirs of a Certified BloggerDescription: Makoy's compilation of thoughts and ideas, comments and reactions to current events, major and minor happenings in his life, photo collection, and whatever things that can be classified as BLOG.Design The design of Makoy's is very simple. The content is on the left and a single navigation sidebar is on the right. I recognize the blog template as one that is available for Blogger users, with the exception of the header.A portion of the header is taken up by Project wonderful ads that stretch over the content and sidebar sections. Two more Project Wonderful ad segments appear in the sidebar with another appearing belo...
When the Kremlin Tried a Little Openness
2008-05-18 23:18:00
Still, it is worth recalling a time when a little openness flew out of control. As a correspondent and bureau chief for The New York Times in Moscow in the late 1980s, I had a ringside seat to observe the slow disintegration of the Soviet Union under Mr. Gorbachev. The collapse of the Soviet empire and ...
Memoirs 2: Youth
2008-04-23 20:17:00
In my introductory chapter last month, I wrote about the city we lived and where I grew up: Olten. We moved there in 1944 and we stayed there until 1956. I had, already as a boy, dreams of other, bigger cities. I remember the Peter Stuyvesant Cigarette add: "The taste of the wide world". I already seemed to have the desire of the wide world in me. Why did we not live in a glamourous place like Zurich? Why did we live in this small, meaningless, foggy town of Olten? We did live there because my father was working as head of publicity in a department store chain called USEGO (Just for fun, this stands for: Union Schweizerischer Einkaufs Genossenschaften Olten). As many Swiss companies of reknown, it has since disappeared. We were a middle class well to do family and we were two sons. We lived in a small two storey house at the outskirts of the town. Now, this does not mean that we were far from the center of town. About 10 minutes to walk, the town was small at that time and it is stil...

Bobby Brown?s Memoirs: What?s the Dewey decimal number for ?fiction-autobio
2008-04-03 15:56:00
“In his upcoming autobiography, Brown blows the lid on his wildly dysfunctional marriage to the troubled, Grammy-winning diva, suggesting that [Whitney Houston] drove him into a nightmare of drug addiction. ‘I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice,’ Brown writes ...
I remember or Memoirs 1
2008-03-22 08:08:00
I was born in this city in 1943. Berne, the Swiss capital. But my parents left Berne a few days after my birth. We would come back to live in Berne again, many years later. The first few weeks of my life, we lived in Biel, a city that was coming to be important in my life. Biel was in those days called "Zukunftstadt": The city of future. The today still very modern "Volkshaus"was built in the 1920's and is sided by the wide "Avenue de la Gare", also with modern buildings from the same period, leading to the railway station which you see at the end of the avenue. This is in contrast with the old part of the city, called the "Ring", with its beautiful century old buildings. Every year, on August 1,our national day, performances are presented to a great number of spectators. The history of Switzerland is told with a stage play taking place in and around the buildings and often "including" the audience into the action. After a few weeks after my birth, my parents moved to Olten, an impor...

Fake memoirs means more money
2008-03-04 04:29:00
Margaret Seltzer aka Margaret B. Jones, is in trouble.  As a little girl, she probably dreamt of being a published writer. She made her dreams come true by writing her memoirs about being half Native American - half white, growing up in South Central Los Angeles, being a witness to murders and joining the Bloods. Pretty amazing life story, even the NY Times and Amazon thought so. Apparently her sister knows Margaret's life story alot better than Margaret herself. Having spied a glowing review of the book in the papers, Big Sis called the paper to inform them that kid sister Margaret is a big, all white, Valley living liar. I have no objection to authors making things up in order to sell a book. It is largely called 'Fiction' in publishing circles. Why did she have to write a 'memoir'? I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from the James Frey incident.
Six Word Memoirs
2008-02-23 17:36:00
Can you describe your life in six words? That's what the editors of storytelling magazine SMITH asked readers in 2006; the results, though decidedly uneven, make for compulsive reading and prove arguably as insightful as any 300+ page biography. Taken as a whole, this cascade of quotes from contributors famous and unknown creates a dizzying snowball effect of perspectives and feelings. Highlights from professional writers and artists include journalist Chuck Klosterman wondering, "Nobody cared, then they did. Why?"; pop singer-songwriter Adam Schlesinger lamenting, "We still don't hear a single"; and comic strip artist Keith Knight illustrating "I was a Michael Jackson impersonator." At their best, these nano-memoirs evoke the same kind of rich emotional responses as a good story: 9 year old Hannah Davies considers herself "Cursed with cancer. Blessed by friends"; Zak Nelson says "I still make coffee for two"; Scott Birch claims "Most successful accomplishments based on spite." So...

Memoirs Of An Addict
2008-02-12 21:00:00
Coffee is my drug of choice.I'm not in denial. I fully embrace the fact that I am an addict. I don't even hold the conviction that I should quit.I'm a full-blown junkie. One to two cups every morning. Two sugars and a splash of milk. This morning, I shuffled to the kitchen, as I do every morning, to get the crack a-cookin'. I'd had an especially difficult night with Baby, who has some kind of yucky respiratory thing going on. She was up and down all night coughing and blowing her nose while I kept administering medication and drinks of water, trying to ease her discomfort. It didn't help that I was up until 2 a.m., either. So, I go through the motions with my eyes only barely open. Empty old filter. Put in new. Two scoops of coffee. Six cups of water. Flip the switch. I shuffle back to the computer to check my email and wait anxiously for my brew. After a few minutes, I notice I can't hear the familiar sounds of percalation or smell the delicious aroma that would normally have m...
Wyclef Jean - Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant [2007]
2008-02-11 06:44:00
Review by Musac Critic Wyclef is in my opinion a musical genius. The ideas and concepts that he uses within his production work and within his rhymes/lyrics are fantastic. The problem with Wyclef is that he sometimes overdoes things. His albums tend to be “all over the place” in nature which doesn’t always endear the listener ...

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) PG-13 145min
2008-01-16 23:25:00
It’s interesting that Steven Spielberg was the executive producer of this movie. I didn’t read the book, but I interviewed some people who did and they said that the movie is mostly faithful to the 1997 best-selling novel, with just a few scenes dropped from the book for the sake of making film short enough. The plot: in 1929 9-year old Chiyo and her sister, who lived in an impoverished fishing village, are sold to a geisha house in Kyoto’s Gion district. There Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo, later Ziyi Zhang - American audience knows Ziyi Zhang mostly for her roles in “House Of Flying Daggers“, “Rush Hour 2“, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Hero“) is harshly treated by the owner, woman known as Mother (Kaori Momoi), and picked to be trained to become geisha (courtesan), while her elder sister was turned away. A beautiful but spoiled and arrogant geisha Hastumomo was giving Chiyo hard time, promising to help her find he...

Review: Lethal Memoirs
2007-12-30 19:55:00
Lethal Memoirsby Lori Derby BingleyAs senior editor of a major publishing house, April Matthews has often read books about murder and mayhem. However, when her brother is accused of murder, her mother goes missing, and an anonymous manuscript describes in detail an event she spent years trying to hide, she is stunned to realize that the man who killed her father is now after her and her family. Caleb McKinley is the arrogant and ambitious assistant DA, and is determined to prosecute April’s brother for murder. When he finds the manuscript describing what happened all those years ago, he is forced to take matters into his own hands. Problem is, once April’s in his arms, he finds it hard to believe she could be capable of anything but love. Could he be wrong? This full-length suspense/romance novel is set in busy, present-day Seattle, but events that happened years ago color the lives of many of the characters. The manuscript April Matthews receives proves to be Lethal Memoir...
Karl Rove Finally Found A Publisher
2007-12-26 01:03:00
Karl Rove’s memoirs will be published by Threshold Editions, the conservative-minded imprint of Simon & Schuster’s Pocket Books overseen by GOP strategist Mary Matalin reports the New York Observer. I guess there were problems finding a publisher. The idea of his memoirs curiously reminds me of OJ’s “If I Did It”. Like “If I Did It”, it ...

Memoirs of a Geisha
2007-12-13 06:19:00
Ebook Title: Memoirs of a Geisha Author: Arthur GoldenPublisher: Vintage (November 22, 2005)Mass Market Paperback: 512 pagesLanguage: EnglishISBN-10: 1400096898ISBN-13: 978-1400096893 Ebook DescriptionAccording to Arthur Golden's absorbing first novel, the word "geisha" does not mean "prostitute," as Westerners ignorantly assume--it means "artisan" or "artist." To capture the geisha experience in the art of fiction, Golden trained as long and hard as any geisha who must master the arts of music, dance, clever conversation, crafty battle with rival beauties, and cunning seduction of wealthy patrons. After earning degrees in Japanese art and history from Harvard and Columbia--and an M.A. in English--he met a man in Tokyo who was the illegitimate offspring of a renowned businessman and a geisha. This meeting inspired Golden to spend 10 years researching every detail of geisha culture, chiefly relying on the geisha Mineko Iwasaki, who spent years charming the very rich and famous. The ...
Wyclef Jean: The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant
2007-12-08 02:45:00
Wyclef Jean: The Carnival II: Memoirs of an ImmigrantHatian born rapper, producer, and guitarist, Wyclef Jean releases the follow up to 1997's The Carnival.A decade later Jean is incredibly less popular. After the Fugees disbanded in 1997, The Carnival served as the closest anyone was going to see to a follow up of the Score. The album sold very well based on the success of the single "Gone til November".Since 1997, Wyclef has released four album to poor results. Each album selling more poorly than the last. The Carnival II seeks to change all of that. As of late, Wyclef has been more visible than the past decade. He appeared and produced "You Know What It Is" on T.I.P.'s latest album T.I. vs T.I.P.. He also appeared on Shakira's smash hit "Hips Don't Lie" last year.I have to admit I have not heard any Wyclef release since the original Carnival. What Wyclef has always suffered from was an inability to pick a genre and stick with it. He bounces from acoustic folk to dance ha...

John Barrowman, his memoirs and anatomical pics
2007-11-09 20:58:00
Torchwood and Doctor Who star John Barrowman has just completed his autobiography, Anything Goes, with the help of ghostwriter, sister Carole, I learn. It's due out next February or March from Michael O'Mara after his well-earned break in South Africa. But what's this I hear of him taking pics of a huge part of his anatomy on the set of Torchwood, having the images blown up and then stuck up put on the wall of a certain Torchwood set? Perhaps the poppet will get in touch and explain himself.Madame Arcati is a great fan of Mr Barrowman - he will become a global superstar through movies I predict - and is pleased to learn that the stitching in another area of his anatomy is holding firm.

Check out David Woon´s blog! It is called "Memoirs of a Sojourner". Some words he describes his blog with: This is the story of my faith journey during my short sojourn on earth. It is my hope that through the sharing of my struggles, temptations, frustrations, joys and triumphs in living out my faith, you would gain some insights into your own sojourn.Doesn´t that sound interesting? He writes about things that matter. His last post was about anger and it is called "The Anger Trilogy". Memoirs of a Sojourner

Though I’m a Buddhist, but that doesn’t mean I shut myself from reading and understanding other people’s faith. Living in a multi cultural ,multi race country, it’s even more important and vital to have understanding and tolerance of each other cultures and faith. This is how I came across a Christian blog by a Singaporean David Woon. Reading David’s Memoirs of a Sojourner is mind opening. This post is about suffering and how his father has been an inspiration for him. It’s also about acknowledging that God is present in those times of suffering. I have to completely agree with this….I’ve seen it, experienced it! David Woon’s Memoirs of a Sojourner is a wonderful read and I appreciate that his posts are short and well thought out. His pos...
