U.S. Rep. Roskam Marches in Wheaton Memorial Day Parade
2011-05-30 22:22:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Memorial Day Parade, Wheaton, Ill- Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R, 6th District) walked in the Wheaton Memorial Day Parade to some applause and ended the exercise by speaking to those assembled at the Wheaton Cemetery to commemorate those that have served us in peace and war and those who gave their last full measure so that we could remain the last best hope of the world. The weather could not have been better as the parade stepped off this morning. The skies were clear and Summer temperatures had finally arrived. As the route rolled on the heat did tend to rise, though. Still, compared to the dismal weather we've seen the last few months, this Memorial...

2011-05-30 15:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston For Memorial Day, I don't usually post much, preferring to dedicate the day to memorializing our troops. To do that this year, I am going to share this story about the mettle of our troops. What follows are excerpts from remarks by Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis on November 13, 2010. Kelly's son, Marine 1st Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, 29, had been killed in action four days earlier in Sangin, in southern Afghanistan, while leading his platoon on a combat patrol: Giving Thanks for Our Warriors "Those with less of a sense of service to the nation never understand it when men and women of character step...
Memorial Day used to mean ...
2011-05-30 14:16:00
For me, the official kickoff of summer ...when my share at the Jersey shore would officially start and so would the drinking and sunning and dancing and grilling and overall silliness followed by more drinking and more dancing.Actually, I still think that's a perfectly fine and fabulous way to spend Memorial Day. But, more recently, maybe it's maturity or more likely just a light bulb, I've thought about what it means when a soldier dies, when someone gets a knock on the door, when someone loses the most important person in the world to them.I'm still going to the beach today.  But, before I enjoy my day off, which is all Memorial Day used to mean to me, I'm praying...

Memorial Day weekend: let the BBQs begin
2011-05-27 20:14:00
Courtesy of MarkusoMemorial Day weekend is the official grilling season kick-off. At least at my house. Maybe. I know this sounds so 1950s, but I don't grill. I leave it to the he-man of the house. The problem is, he doesn't grill either. Oh, he CAN grill. He just doesn't like to do it and only does it under duress. Something about it being imprecise. My partner is all about timing and temperatures and the degree of doneness. And often that precision is hard to achieve on an outdoor grill. Especially with the invited guests swirling around, distracting the chef from timing and temperatures and degree of doneness. If the end result produces chicken a little dry or burgers that are...
Memorial Day Weekend: I Ask A Favor Of You
2011-05-27 11:48:00
Memorial Day Weekend: I Ask A Favor Of You Another long Memorial Day Weekend is upon us and most of us are busy making plans for a backyard barbeque and/or family get-together...But, I would still like to ask a favor of you just the same. Don't worry, though, for the most part it costs you absolutely nothing. To all those who are staying home for the weekend, all I ask is that you fly your flag proudly. And if you just happen to see a member of our military....

Memorial Day 2011
2011-05-26 14:38:00
For many of us, this weekend marks the beginning of summer. While I love a good BBQ, the holiday began as a reconciliation for Union and Confederate states, soldiers, all Americans to reconcile and remember the sacrifice and schism our country went through. Later, Memorial Day became a remembrance for all of those who have served and lost their lives preserving not only our right to freedom but our neighbors, allies and not so friendly factions, as well. At some point, I hope we'll all take a quiet moment and say thank you for those in the Armed Forces now and those who have come before. Have a safe BBQ and hopefully it dries out so we can enjoy it...
A Kenilworth Memorial Day celebration
2011-05-25 04:54:00
It isn't quite right to say that the tiny Village of Kenilworth"exceeds expectations" - more accurately it defies expectations. Kenilworth is a very traditional island on the North Shore that shares many traits with small town America. Think Boy Scouts, bingo nights at the Kenilworth Assembly Hall and a municipal bowling league, for starters. One way in which Kenilworth departs from tradition is that it celebrates Memorial Day a week early. This year's Memorial Day events in Kenilworth took place last Sunday, May 22. In the 2007 video above, a large number of Kenilworth residents line the perimeter of the village green. Boy and Girl Scouts plant individual flags honoring Kenilworth residents who died in our wars as the...

Private collection One of the  preparatory drawings for the painting now in the Musée Granet was auctioned by Christies in 2001 in New York The Christie`s catalogue entry is most instructive: "The picture is recorded in Guercino's Libro dei Conti on 5 January 1634 and on 18 August 1634, ... The first entry concerns the commission for a 'Tavola di Santa Teresia per il Sigr. Lumaga di lione di Francia da cordo in ducatni 400'. On 18 August payment was registered, and the picture was probably finished. The picture was then sent to Barthélémy Lumagne in Lyon, who hung it in his family chapel in the Church of the Carmelites. Happy Memorial Day: Employment in the military
2010-05-31 20:45:00
There are many reasons people enlist in the military for service.  Some feel it is their duty to serve our government as their ancestors have before them.  Others serve to gain access to college and some, for a career path with guaranteed employment and benefits. There are many personal reasons for enlisting, yet all serve our country while protecting our freedom.  Though not perfect, the United States is still the best place in the world. It offers the best lifestyle and potential opportunities for success. With unemployment close to 11% in many areas, contacting the military may be a viable option for employment.  A huge misconception is that all the jobs in the military are in combat.  This is just...
Chicago Cubs Monday Headlines and Game Thread: Happy Memorial Day/Cubs @ Pi
2010-05-31 12:14:00
I think it's worthwhile every Memorial Day to take a few moments to appreciate that so many have sacrificed their lives to build this great nation in which we live. I'd rather more people focus on that than on boating and grilling, but we all have our own thing.I'm not going to mention yesterday's game, so we'll just jump to the exciting news. Our newest minor league prospect savior is on his way. Andrew Cashner will join the team in Pittsburgh.Asked if the Cubs planned to make a roster move to balance out the bullpen with Carlos Zambrano returning to the rotation, Lou Piniella said Andrew Cashner, the organization's top draft pick in 2008, would join the team before the...
Memorial Day is there for a reason: to honor our war dead
2010-05-31 08:08:00
"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."--John 15:13"That damned hero stuff is a bunch crap, I guess...You gotta understand that there's all kinds of heroes, but they never get a chance to be in a hero's position."--John William Finn was the nation's oldest living Medal of Honor winner. He died on May 27. One of my regular beefs, which my wife and kids have long since tired of hearing, is this:Holidays like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day exist for a reason.  It's not just a day off school or work, or an occasion to picnic. For years I have felt that our schools don't do a good job of teaching...

Memorial Day Will It Ever Be Celebrated For What It Means?
2010-05-29 18:24:00
Memorial Day Will It Ever Be Celebrated For What It Means? Memorial Day, to me, however, means something entirely different. A day to remember why we enjoy our freedoms, which have been bought and paid for by our many veterans. Those veterans, that have given the last measure of sacrifice for their country.

Memorial Day Headlines/Open Thread

I think I finally figured it out.  This year's version of the Cubs wasn't content to just go out and be in first from wire-to-wire on its way to another NL Central championship.  Instead, they wanted to fall behind, create some adversity, then rise above for the final triumph.  I hope the rising above comes soon, because I think we're all sick of the falling behind, which continued with a 7-2 loss yesterday. "I don't think we're going to start backpedaling," losing pitcher Ted Lilly said. "I guess I kind of feel like we've been slapped around a little the last week. [We're] embarrassed. There's been times where an opposition sees a club that's struggling, it's almost like smelling weakness, and I think they're doing everything they can to take advantage of what we're doing and how we're scuffling right now. "And they're going to continue to do that, continue to come after us, be aggressive on us, steal bases when they get the opportunities. We're goin...

Memorial Day in Texas: secession wasn't Perry's point at all
2009-05-25 06:51:00
By raising states' rights at a tea bag event, then backing away ASAP assuring everybody it’s just really, really just a discussion about federalism and the role of local vs national government, has Governor Rick Perry sent his signal to those who hear it another way? It didn't stay off the radar, but if the message was received does he care? Some of us still vividly recall George Wallace flanked by Alabama State Troopers, and an era when states' rights was just the PC way to say "segregation is our vision."Try surveying Texans on Memorial Day, or the 4th of July, and I guarantee they won't be talking about seceding, they're proud to be Americans. If you ask them about Bush cutting taxes on the rich while shorting armor for Americans in Iraq they won't defend him much more than anybody else in the GOP, either. You might think it was just a ploy for exposure by their current Governor - Perry's back-walking the rhetoric as hard and fast as he can, certainly. But was it really ...

Even though I was really ill, I forced myself to go and place flowers at his grave site as I've made it a habit to visit him on Memorial Day each year. He fought in World War II. But this time, I took my biological father's burial flag with me. Both my father and stepfather died in 2005. To some who are anti-war, the title of this video-blog will upset them. It should not. I'm against war and always have been, but the reality of my life is that both my late father and stepfather fought in World War II, and in my father's case, Zenophon Abraham of is his name (he lives in Chicago), I am the proud owner of his neatly folded burial flag and two bullets wrapped in them. In the US Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer season and while, after the winter chill, many of us make the BBQ, grilling and beach going a priority over the three-day Memorial Day weekend, it's also a great time to shop because Memorial Day Weekend tends to be a big sales weekend for summer clothes, home furnishings, consumer electronics, and hotels and vacation packages etc. But the main thing to us fashionistas, is that Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to freshen up our wardrobes with the season's best looks. Something to Think About for Memorial Day Weekend
2009-05-19 13:49:00
What is Memorial Day all about? This is my annual attempt to reveal the meaning of this weekend’s holiday so here we go… For most people, next Monday is just another day off. It’s an occasion to sleep late, relax at the beach, or enjoy potato salad at family barbecues. Ten years ago, my family started a new tradition of observing certain holidays by honoring the reasons they became holidays in the first place. On the Fourth of July, for example, we take turns reading the Declaration of Independence. Charities devoted to former soldiers need help on Veteran’s Day and urban renewal projects look for volunteers on Martin Luther King Day. On Labor Day, we watch Grapes of Wrath and curse the man. See a pattern? We acknowledge the meaning behind days off, teach our children some history, and serve our community at the same time. Everyone wins. Memorial Day is an annual opportunity to pay tribute to those who have died for our country. There are many ways to demonstrate our apprec...

Over at Done With Mirrors Callimachus tells the stories of soldiers and civilians that gave their lives doing what they believed was right and highlights one of the truly grim facts of war; that all too often war costs us the bravest, most selfless, and most principled citizens that our nation has to offer.
