I hope Members of Congress return rested, because they have a lot of work left on important issues and limited time to get it done.Congress needs to pass a responsible war funding bill that puts the needs of our troops first, without loading it up with unrelated domestic spending. Our troops in Afghanistan are performing with courage and honor, delivering blows to the Taliban and al Qaida. Our troops in Iraq have driven al Qaida and other extremists from sanctuaries they once held across the country and are chasing them from th...
Memorial Day (Traditional)
2008-05-31 08:34:00 Today is the day that Memorial Day was originally observed on prior to being moved to create a three day weekend. Over at Done With Mirrors Callimachus tells the stories of soldiers and civilians that gave their lives doing what they believed was right and highlights one of the truly grim facts of war; that all too often war costs us the bravest, most selfless, and most principled citizens that our nation has to offer.

Decoration Day - Memorial Day
2008-05-28 18:35:00 I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. I did, the wife and I celibrated her birthday spending the night at a local hotel Casino and resort. A good time was had by us both. But I could not help but think about Memorial Day and where it comes from, and its connection to the blues. I have heard songs by several of the prewar bluesmen like Sonny Boy Williamson I, that mention Decoration Day. So I thought I would do a little research on the topic. Here is just a bit of what I found; Some sites mistakenly credit Howlin Wolf as the writer of this song and say that Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) covered his version. But I remembered hearing a version of the song titled Decoration Blues done by Sonny Boy Williamson I (John Lee Williamson) which made me think that the song had an eairlier orgin.Decoration Blues Sonny Boy Williamson I (John Lee)(John Lee Williamson)Sonny Boy Williamson I - vocals & harmonicaYank Rachell - mandolin & guitarJoe Williams - guitarRecorded March 13, 193...

5 Places Teens Should Look for Summer Employment After Memorial Day
2008-05-28 16:04:00 Due to their lack of experience, teens often encounter challenges while searching for summer jobs. With the school year about to end, many are finding that it’s too late to apply for some summer positions. To help our peers, we put together a list of five places where teens should look for the perfect summer job. 1. Golf Courses. Golf courses are everywhere and have a huge need for seasonal employment. Caddying, landscaping and working in the gift shop or restaurant are some opportunities available to teens.2. Offices. Whether it’s helping to answer phones, filing or doing paperwork, there is always a lot going on in an office for a smart and responsible teen to do. Working in an office also provides teens with the chance to learn about being in a professional workplace.3. Museums and Other Cultural Institutions. Summer is the time for big shows and large crowds. Museums are always looking ...

What REALTORS can learn from Memorial Day
2008-05-27 18:14:00 Memorial day traditionally honors those fallen soldiers of war in our country. Since the end of the Civil War, the holiday has been an opportunity for ordinary Americans to set aside some time - officially, without work - to remember those who gave their lives to defend our way of life. And while most wars are fought in defense of "liberty" and "democracy" and "freedom" they are all ultimately struggles for the one item on the planet that makes all of those concepts possible: Property. Memorial Day Super 8 Meme...a Day Late
2008-05-27 17:53:00 Yesterday, Memorial Day, I got meme'd, against my wishes. Got one of those Internet chain letter types of things called a MEME where I am supposed to yap about me and share stuff I wouldn't ordinarily. Since I was busy with business I didn't get this done until today. Sorry, Irina. Mary McKnight initiated this Memorial Day Super 8 MEME, based on the number 8, you know like 8-ball, figure 8? Her rationale? It's her favorite number, the 8 is the infinity symbol if you turn it on its side, and it's 2008. Whatever. Anyhow, she meme'd Laurie Manny, who meme'd Irinia Netchaev, who decided I ought to be part of the 8 bloggers she needed to meme. Lucky me. Since I tend to be a law abiding citizen, and meme law according to Mary McKnight requires that I answer these questions AND find 8 other lucky bloggers to do the same, I cooperated. Sort of a twist on "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Here's Mary's MEME Here's La...

Memorial Day Weekend on the Big Green Egg
2008-05-27 17:32:00 We’re just past Memorial Day weekend. I have to say that I’m a bit saddened that Memorial Day isn’t really observed for what it’s meant to honor, which is fallen U.S. soldiers. I don’t go out of my way to do a lot for the day, but I do think about the sacrifices made by others. Unfortunately, I saw a lot of other celebrations going on, too, that had nothing to do with that; people are just confused, I guess. On Saturday, Pat of Patrick’s BBQ held his annual customer appreciation event by cooking anything that he could fit in his smoker (which is a whole lot). While there, I noticed a field of wildflowers, and I had to wander down to get a better look. It is a long weekend, and it unofficially denotes the start of summer. We had incredible weather for Saturday and Sunday, with Monday not too awful. On Sunday, my dad and stepmother were in Ohio, and they spent the afternoon and evening with us, which was all the excuse I needed to put the XL...

2008-05-27 10:45:00 There have been, still are and always will be days in the great game of baseball where you can ultimately do little more than to offer a tip of the ole’ ballcap to the opposing pitcher. Memorial Day Quilt
2008-05-27 10:00:00 Last year on May 26th my nephew Alex drowned in a lake near his home. Seven years old and profoundly autistic, he was a charming master of escape and even with all the precautions his parents had taken to prevent such a tragedy he slipped away and by the time neighbors and family could locate him it was too late.It was a time our family will always remember and we think of Alex often, especially at family get-togethers where we notice his absence more than ever. For my sister Memorial Day has a special significance in the son she's lost.I haven't written about it until now because there was a lot of misrepresentation in our local media. People who didn't know the family heard incomplete stories in the news and assumed the worst about the care Alex had received--some editorials were quick to judge without having all the facts. I didn't want to be involved in the noise and didn't want to cause more pain for my sister and her family by calling more attention to the things some...

2008-05-27 09:04:00 A neat story for those honoring Memorial Day.Brian Charlton, Associated PressKANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Frank Woodruff Buckles, the last known living American-born veteran of World War I, was honored Sunday at the Liberty Memorial during Memorial Day weekend celebrations."I had a feeling of longevity and that I might be among those who survived, but I didn't know I'd be the No. 1," the 107-year-old veteran said at a ceremony to unveil his portrait. His photograph was hung in the main hallway of the National World War I Museum, which he toured for the first time, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States presented him with a gold medal of merit. On Monday, he will be presented the American flag flying outside the memorial.Buckles, who now lives in Charles Town, W.Va., has been an invited guest at the Pentagon, met with President Bush in Washington, D.C., and rode in the annual Armed Forces Day Parade in his home state since his status as one of the last living from the "Great War...

I know that the main thing that carried my friend through this difficult time was her testimony of Jesus Christ and His power over the

Memorial Day
2008-05-27 03:13:00 As I drove back from my retreat a few weeks ago, I stopped into a Best Buy to check my e-mail. I had not logged on for five days and I could not longer could take being SO electronically disconnected. When I did, it was then that I found out that my Great Uncle Ed had passed away - it had happened the night before and Mom had left me a message on my cell (which I had also left at home).I have written about my uncle before; his wife had passed two years ago after 63 years of marriage and his already frail health took a turn for the worse. I went to visit him last August and I had the feeling that that would be the last time, and as it turned out it was. I was able to participate in the funeral Mass as an altar server and was able to deliver one of the two eulogies during the service.Because of a video project (parts of which I hope to be able to show publicly within the month) and school work, I have not had the opportunity to do much writing. Canoga Park Memorial Day parade
2008-05-27 02:45:00 I was settling in for a nice afternoon of surfing and listening to music when my conscience panged. "It was Memorial Day and I should do something besides blog about it, action being twice as valuable as thought (unless you're Plato or something). Besides, I have my paternal responsibilities, examples to give, etc.." I looked on the internet and saw that Canoga Park in the Valley above Los Angeles was having a parade and decided to attend. It's nice to see that a couple thousand of my fellow citizens and another couple thousand potential citizens (Both the crowd and the marchers were demographically representative of Los Angeles.) out of 10,000,000 can make it to one of these events. It was a good effort by those involved and I appreciate that people take time to plan these things. Mexican cowboys with the American flag on parade.
