memories of malaybalay, bukidnon
2012-01-03 15:24:00 Many years ago, our family visited Malabalay City in Bukidnon to attend my cousin's wedding. When we reached Malaybalay that afternoon, the first thing that I noticed was the drop in temperature. At 622 MASL, this city indeed enjoys a cool climate all year round. The change in temperature is also accompanied by a change in the atmosphere. I remember that as we drove nearer into the heartland of Mindanao, the bustling cityscape of Cagayan de Oro was replaced with lush forests, vast vegetable plantations and rolling mountains. The green sceneries reminded me of Middleearth in one way or the other. I would not be surprised at all if there would be Hobbits sighted one day in this part of the Philippines. Monastery of the Transfiguration My cousin's wedding was held at the Monastery of the Transfiguration in Barangay San Jose. The church resembles a pyramid with a square base. It was designed by no less than Leandro Locsion, a National Artist for Architecture. The sleek lin...

2011-12-24 21:22:00 My husband and I have been married 31 years as of this year. When we were first married we could not afford a honeymoon, so we waited a year to travel to Hawaii. Christmas Memories: Gifts of the Heart
2011-12-24 18:51:00 I'm wearing my flamingo Airstream trailer pajamas as I write this. They're aqua with puff of snow, red scarves flying from the pink flamingo's while lights outline the Airstream's door and windows. When I was a girl, our Christmas--like everything else in our family life--was do-it-ourselves from tree to treats to gifts. We cut our ...

Your Memories Take Center Stage with the New Photo Carousel
2011-11-09 00:52:00 Photo galleries on WordPress.com are a great way to share the pictures you’ve taken with your friends, family, and your followers. But the design of your theme can limit how large your high-resolution photos are displayed. Today, we’re announcing a great new way to make the most of your photos: a full-size carousel view that presents your images as large as your display can contain them. To experience the carousel, just click an image in a photo gallery on any WordPress.com blog. You can navigate between photos using the left and right arrow keys, or by clicking or tapping the arrows on the left and right. You can easily like a photo from the carousel, too. When you’re done, click anywhere in the background or press the Esc key on your keyboard to return to the thumbnails. Check it out here, with this gallery of images taken by some of our colleagues during our recent meetup in Budapest. Now, whether you’re using a tablet or a large desktop displa...

Doctor Video: Save your memories
Beh, ...

Childhood Memories
2011-08-14 07:37:00 Memories... Little treasures and traps that we collect over a lifetime. Longtime readers know that I've worked hard to help Cait focus on the treasures, as I try to do for myself. That's because, as a storyteller, I'm keenly aware of the power of the stories we tell ourselves about where we've been, who we are, and where we're going. Hence my desire to carry the treasures forward. One of my favorite early memories is of going to my Italian grandmother's house in the city. I'd scramble out of the car, rush to give my grandmother a hug and then run out into her walled backyard. It was filled with glorious wonders--a fish pond, a little orchard of plum trees heavy with fruit, a huge cherry tree that rained down so many cherries they carpeted the grass, and the heavenly-scented honeysuckle vines that covered the back wall. I thought of it as my own Secret Garden. Whether I was playing by myself or with siblings or cousins, I loved that I never had to stop to go inside to eat--...

Mother's Day Memories
2011-05-08 21:18:00 Baseball is often talked about as a game of fathers and sons, but it's important today for all of us to remember Mom. My mother got me to every Little League game (no small task considering the rural area where I grew up), came to all my high school games, encouraged and helped me as I studied broadcasting at Northwestern, and was always a great baseball fan who didn't mind a bit that any family vacation had to include a stop at a major league game. I remember the sandwiches she packed when we went to Chicago for my first game in 1969 and I remember how she wanted to spend her 70th birthday at Wrigley Field (she did, in the...

Cancer: Thanks for the Memories
2011-01-05 05:15:00 Cancer sucks...it sucks for the patient, it sucks for the patient's caregivers, and it sucks for the family--the family that watches a once beautiful person shrink into a shell of their former self. I write this to help others in the same boat, those who have just begun a journey down this path, those at the end of their path, I also, selfishly, write it for myself. It helps to talk about it--it helps to cry about it--it even helps to laugh about it. It is a disease I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy--I'm writing it in parts--The story tells the end of our battle with the disease; over a course of six weeks. I hope you'll come back tomorrow for more--

2011-01-01 08:54:00 Maligayang Pagdating 2011? Welcome 2011! I miss celebrating the New Year in the Philippines. January 1 is the most colourful day in the Philippines. Why, you ask? It?s because everybody is wearing their new and most colourful clothes today. I kid you not. Try driving around your city or locality and you?ll see what I mean =) But for us in Phnom Penh, it is an ordinary day. New Year?s eve and New Year?s day celebration here aren?t like that in the Philippines or any other western countries for that matter. Both days are not an official public holiday and can actually be uneventful, if not boring. However with the ever-increasing expat-community and tourists and the Khmer?s fascination for anything western, the international new year, and Christmas for that matter, is becoming more and more popular that restaurants, bars and hotels have made it a big deal ensuring endless dining and partying options not only in Phnom Penh but also in other key touristic locales like Siem Reap...

Halloween memories, scariest Halloween moment
2010-10-31 16:25:00 Hanging out at home before I head out to enjoy Halloween. I love throw pillows! For as long as I can remember, I've always been enthused about Halloween. My mother started it. She'd encourage my brother and I to help her out with Halloween decorations. One time we even created a haunted house, and my brother stuffed a man in a trench coat and pants to stand on our porch with a Jason mask on. I don't think we got many trick-or-treaters that year though because people were too scared to come on the porch. (This was in the '80s when "Friday the 13th" was the hottest thing out.) Speaking of Halloween memories, I've had some scary moments of my own...

Roy Halladay No-Hitter: Philly's Ace Brings Back Memories
2010-10-07 02:05:00 On Wednesday night, Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay threw his second no-hitter of the year. It was the first postseason no-hitter since Don Larson threw a perfect game for the Yankees in 1956, and the last pitcher to throw two no-no's in the same year was Nolan Ryan over 30 years ago. Halladay had spent ten years struggling with the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of the American League East Division. He had always been good, but this was his first crack at the postseason. He made it count, throwing only 104 pitches to complete the remarkable performance. And the win stirred wonderful memories for me......

It seemed like the shortest NBA off-season in history, simply because it was the most exciting one that we could ever have. Cherish it, we'll never see a July like that again. The Chicago Bulls were a major player in that offseason, and although they failed to land any of the primary prizes available, they still made some huge improvements on last year's team. And even if they hadn't nabbed Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer etc. you couldn't fault them for first liquidating their assets and "backing...

Memories Of Provence & French Inspired Giveaway!
2010-09-14 15:58:00 I honestly think the older I get, the harder that jetlag thing becomes. Maybe it is simply that each time it becomes a tad bit more significant in emotions and events. I did give myself the weekend off to do the mundane "back from vacation" routine and spend some time with B. and our friends getting re-adjusted.I also took time to write down some sort of schedule as my work time is pretty much spoken for until this April. I look forward to come here on this page and unwind with more recipes and stories! In that spirit and to tell you "Thank you" from the bottom of my heart for reading, laughing, frowning and smiling with me, I put together a little basket of French goodies I picked up on my trip to give away today. Head to the end of the post for instructions on how to enter...!In the meantime, on to the Southern part of my trip back home. I do hope my aunt and uncle won't mind my posting about their gorgeous home and the wonderful meal we had when we stopped there on our way from t...

Photo Hunt #52: Numerical
2010-08-21 10:32:00 I have three pictures to share. First one is map showing the route that my husband took on his cycling trip of Western Europe: The numbers written in red ink represent the dates he spent on the camp sites in France. The following photos are Japanese samurai and geisha dolls on display at Asakusa, it was screaming take me home at me... I would've wanted to buy all these for souvenirs but darn these numbers - they're too expensive! Do the maths here, at the time I was in Tokyo, the dollar to yen exchange was $1 = 129yen. So, I only got myself this pretty geisha doll with the green umbrella =)

Night Swimming
2010-07-14 18:00:00 Sometime in the mid-1960?s, my great grandfather, Granddaddy Bee, donated land to a local trust to build a community pool in the rural Virginia farmland where my grandmother grew up.Other gentlemen farmers from the area contributed resources and a small, country swimming pool opened to serve the local population. There has never been a lifeguard on duty there. No whistles are blown. No one shouts, ?no running!? and there?s no such thing as ?Adult Swim.?There have been numerous jumps off the pool house roof into too shallow water, many attempts to capture a greased watermelon bobbing in the pool long after dark has fallen, hundreds of vigorous games of beach volleyball in the sandy court behind the pool and thousands of cans of beer fervently sipped by underage drinkers.A life time of memories of my summer visits to my great-grandmother?s house, and later, after she and my grandfather retired there, to my grandparents house are inextricably linked to this country pool, lost in time.Befo...

Travel journals not only help you relive vacation memories, but take you on
2010-05-11 05:27:00 The scenic seaside town of Villefranche-sur-Mer in the south of France provided the PERFECT backdrop for days of my travel journaling in January 2009. For me, one of the most enjoyable things about travel is RELIVING it when I return home. I wrote previously about keeping your travel adventures alive once you're trip is over - and another great way to do this is by keeping a Travel Journal. Just like photos you take time to lovingly place into an album, a journal written in your own script (or typed onto your laptop) will re-create mental memories from your trip for years to come. First, you'll have to decide what you'll use to record your memories. While some folks...
Whitney Houston and Bittersweet Memories
2010-04-28 21:20:00 Once upon a time, a beautiful and talented singer fell for a bad boy and believed that she could change him. It is a common saga, but in this case the woman had uncommon talent. The sad fact is that it was he who changed her. Whitney Houston was at the top of her game when she met Bobby Brown. She was a performer with the voice of an angel and an emerging movie star. Anyone who has ever seen "The Bodyguard" remembers the soundtrack even if they forgot the movie. "I Will Always Love You" has become almost an anthem at weddings and is a staple at black tie events for all ages. We all know what happened next. ...

2010-04-15 19:18:00 Mimi Rothschild Brings You “Busyness: The Thief of Family Memories“ Submitted: March 31, 2010 | Author: Alan Melton | Posted in: Encourage & Inspire  Print This Article |  Email This Article âSeventeen summersâ said the busy father, wistfully describing the memory of his oldest child growing up. He continued, âWe get seventeen summer vacations, and then our children are gone.â His statement stung me as I thought about my own family experience. Is that all there is with parenting; seventeen family vacations? If scripture teaches that children are a blessing, why am I not enjoying that blessing? I thought about my own busy schedule; go to work Monday through Friday with some evening work, then Monday night â Deaconâs meeting/basketball practice, Tuesday night â church visitation, Wednesday night â prayer meeting & youth Choir, Friday night â youth group meeting, Saturday â basketball game, yard work and church social, Sunday â tea...

Growing up with food memories
2010-02-07 04:53:00 I never figured out whether Mother really liked burnt toast or if she just pretended to as she couldnât afford to throw out food on our meager food budget. While reading Nigel Slaterâs âtoast: the story of a boyâs hungerâ I was racked with the similarities in his life and mine. A mother who wasnât the greatest cook in the world and a father that you wanted to love but where deathly scared of. All of that along with the fact that I was born in 1956 and he in 1958 and we lived just about 8 miles apart; so many of the places and names of consumer goods were also ones of my immediate childhood. I was inspired to take notes of all the memories that flooded back to me that where food related while reading his memoir, and here they are to share with you.I was surprised by how many of my early years had food memories attached to them. In fact one of my earliest and most compelling, fond thoughts was when Mother kissed me. Her breath always carried the bouquet of coffee. Our famil...
