If you?ve followed the Tink! blogs, you are loyal NKOTB fans, or ?Blockheads? as you affectionately like to refer to yourselves. As a writer, what I?ve found amazing is the number of fans who have waited faithfully in hibernation until the NKOTB?s return in 2008. Some of you experienced NKOTB in your teen years and have not wavered in your support during their 14 year hiatus. Many of you are now adults, and others are mothers returning with their daughters (now the same age they were when they first were introduced to NKOTB). In advance of NKOTB's Summer Tour, here are 6 quick polls that will determine some of the demographics and preferences of the NKOTB fan base. Take the ?Hangin' Tough? Sex and the Menopause
2009-05-12 18:18:00
Referred to in hushed tones as ?the change? or dismissed as little more than a series of hot flushes, even in today?s liberal society the very word menopause is still somewhat taboo. Menopausal and post-menopausal women, their loved ones and even GPs are still reluctant to discuss the effects it can have on women?s love lives.New survey results[i] published recently in Menopause International*, however, reveal a genuine and pressing need to raise awareness of issues around the menopause and to banish misconceptions based on the cliché that women at certain stages of life would happily forsake sex for a nice cup of tea.The survey of 2,527 peri- and post-menopausal women ? conducted by the physician-led site https://mail.hostedexchange.com-/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http-://www.menopausematters.co.uk and now promoted by pure intimacy experts Yes (http://www.yestointimacy.com/)- ? showed that 84 per cent of these felt that an active sex life was important: In other words, women who are go...
Menopause Timing can Affect Parkinsons Risk
2009-04-09 22:34:00
According to the latest research, women who count more years between their first period and menopause actually have a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease. These findings which appeared in a USA Today article by Mary Brophy Marcus, will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 61st annual meeting in Seattle in April. This research indicates that longer exposure to the body's own hormones may indeed help protect the brain cells which are affected by Parkinson's disease. The author of the study is Rachel Saunders-Pullman of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.read more

Rapid menopause can increase the risk of heart disease
2009-02-06 00:30:00
A study conducted by the Los Angeles Atherosclerosis of 203 women between the ages of 45 and 60 determined that those who transitioned from being premenopausal to fully postmenopausal within three years had a greater buildup of fatty plaque in their carotid arteries. This placed them at an increased risk for a higher rate of "preclinical atherosclerosis" ? the narrowing of arteries due to thickening of their artery walls.Of the 203 women, 52 were premenopausal, 20 were perimenopausal and 131 were postmenopausal. None had prior cardiac disease. The participants were first evaluated as they entered the study, then again at two 18-month intervals. Evaluations were not made using such subjective factors as hot flashes, but rather on carotid intimal-media thickness (cIMT) measurements and objective measures of menopausal status based on hormone levels and physiologic changes."We know that more fatty plaque accumulation predicts future heart attacks and strokes, but this is our first vent...

Middle-age is a time of transition for most people, and for women, it usually means the transition into menopause. Outside of menstrual periods ending, menopause also signifies a major shift in hormones that make our bodies tick. A large study of women moving from perimenopause through menopause has found that certain cardiovascular risks increase exponentially for women, but the good news is, there are things they can do about it. Menopause Menopause is the time when a woman has stopped having menstrual periods. In the few years leading up to that time, a woman?s periods are likely to be irregular and sporadic. Therefore, researchers say that menopause has officially occurred when a woman has gone without a period for 12 consecutive months.According to the North American Menopause Society, more than 45 million American women have reached menopause. The average age at the time of menopause is 51. The Metabolic Syndrome The metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of conditions ass...

The higher their percent body fat, the more likely the women were to experience hot flashes and night sweats. This is new information; it has previously been thought that women who were heavier actually had fewer hot flashes compared to those who were thin. This is because adipose (fat) tissue, especially fat in the abdomen, produces estrogen from precursor hormones that are made in the ovary and adrenal glands.Heavier women tend to have higher circulating levels of estrogen than thin women and these higher levels were felt to reduce a woman's risk of hot flashes. Higher levels of estrogen have other benefits, too ? they also reduce the ...

Menopause Goddess is Great!
2008-11-17 21:24:00
I had the pleasure or reviewing a book sent to my Lynette Sheppard entitled, The Big M (of course M stands for menopause!)In short, I picked it up and didn't put it down until I was done ... and it was delightful. I felt like I'd entered an alternate universe full of the sisterhoof of traveling menopausers (ok maybe that isnt' a REAL word). But Lynette has successfully brought together several friends in this book who meet yearly to talk about their lives as "Venuses" and how they keep changing. More importantly, they explore how they can help each other through this awkard and often infuriating transition called mid-life. Hence the sisterhood. There's a great section on hot flashes and what worked for these women (this is probably the most common symptom we want to know most about). She also reviews the emotional aspects that can be so devastating to us (but less so when we talk about it). For example she remembers when Whoopi Goldberg's did a one-woman show about menopause and ...

Skin Care in Menopause
2008-11-10 19:03:00
Skin becomes rough, thin and wrinkled with age. This process accelerates after menopause. Using skin care practices that help to soften, smooth and hydrate skin will counter a lot of these changes. Even better is to also build collagen with your skin care regimen.I am a 50 year old post menopausal dermatologist with a large medical practice. I have watched many of my female patients, and myself move through menopause. I see our skin change and it is a priority of mine to find effective skin care products to counter this. I’ve created skin care regimens that keep skin looking healthy and feeling smooth - with a youthful dewy luster. I give specific information on my new web site, http://www.otbskincare.com/. I explain what I recommend and why. For skin from the neck down, I like a strong glycolic acid moisturizer and physical exfoliation to polish and hydrate skin, and to get rid of those rough age spots that I call barnacles. Picking effective glycolic acid products is tricky. The...
Scott Keppel: How to Avoid Weight Gain Post Menopause
2008-11-04 00:33:00
Whether you want it to happen or not, menopause is going to happen. I’m sure you have all heard horror stories from women that have gone through it and several of them stating how their body never went back to the way it used to be. How they gained weight and could not lose it. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. I’m here to inform you on how you can at least slow down the weight gain post menopause if not avoid it completely. You will see that there are several changes that do occur do to menopause that you can not control, but you will also see there are a number of which you can control. Sadly, many women do not get the ones they can change under control and the weight comes on. I suggest you become proactive rather than reactive and knowing you’re going to experience it prepare yourself so when it does occur you are as ready as you can be.Menopause, which most women experience in their 40’s-50’s (the average age for women in the Western region of the world is 51) is “The time in a wom...
New Data Can Predict Menopause Within a Year
2008-11-03 19:17:00
Women who are sensitive to the ticking of their biological clock, especially those who choose to have children later in life, may soon be able to learn when menopause is likely to occur.Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered new information about hormonal biomarkers that can address the beginning of the menopause transition."In the end, this information can change the way we do business," said MaryFran Sowers, professor in the University of Michigan School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. "The information provides a roadmap as to how fast women are progressing through the different elements of their reproductive life."Ms. Sowers led a research team that examined the naturally occurring changes in three different biomarkers over the reproductive life of more than 600 women: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B.Read more here
Male Menopause: What a Woman Can Do
2008-10-29 17:50:00
QUESTION: I found your article How Male Menopause Affects Families to be very interesting, and it truly describes my husband's mental state. I have tried to get him into counseling and on medication. He is destroying everything -- and everyone who cares about him. My question is, do I give him an ultimatum, or should I just nag him to death until he seeks help? After 27 years of marriage, I have just about given up on our relationship. It's very sad.ANSWER: Male menopause is very painful and confusing for men and women, and there is a tendency to blame ourselves or our partner. You need to recognize that this isn't your fault -- nor is it his.Men going through this difficult change of life often feel that the very core of their masculine identity is at risk. For many men, even acknowledging that there is such a thing as male menopause makes them feel even more vulnerable. As a result, most men will deny there is any problem at all, and it is often women who contact me first.Fortu...

Acne And The Menopause
2008-08-26 21:02:00
Sometimes it really feels like women always get the raw end of the deal. Throughout our lives, our bodies are subjected to varying degrees of trauma and upheaval. Think monthly periods, pregnancy and giving birth. During this time our hormones are set into overdrive, with psychological as well as physiological side effects, none of which tend to be particularly pleasant.   However women approaching, going through or coming out of the menopause may be surprised to find themselves experiencing acne breakouts. But as hormonal activity is pretty much just as turbulent during the menopause as it is during puberty, and thus it makes sense that during this time similar symptoms can be experienced. So just at that time when you’re experiencing the hot flushes, the mood swings, trouble concentrating, disturbed sleep, the feelings of anxiousness, you also get an attack of acne. Isn’t having acne during this time a bit like being kicked when you’re down?  Although acne isn’t always a...
Goodbye Menopause Complaint & Menstrual pain

Going through the age of 40, sooner or later, womwn will surely face a menopause period. In that period, women will have no more menstrual period. Menopause is critical point for women's health as the menstruation ceases, the function of other organs also decreases or weakens. For example, calcium absortion into bones is not as strong as before. As a result, women are at the risk of suffering from osteoporosis, lower back pain, and backache. But it does not necessary mean that menopause brings pain. Dr. Tzan, a gynecologist from a hospital in Taipei, in seminar organized by Tiens before, explained many things that we can do to help women getting through the menopause period healthily and happily. Natural Relief from Menopause Symptoms
2008-06-05 13:59:00
Menopause is the point at which a woman stops ovulating and menstruation ceases, indicating the end of fertility. As a normal event, menopause is usually confirmed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 40 and 58, with the average at about age 51. Symptoms can start occurring several years prior actually entering menopause. This stage is called peri-menopause.

Menopause Symptoms and Memory Loss
2008-05-27 21:40:00
While you may experience the misery of hot flashes and mood swings as you enter menopause, one thing you can't blame on the "change" is memory loss.In the latest study that exonerates menopause as a cause of impairing the ability to recall, Taiwanese researchers compared the memory of hundreds of women before they had any menopausal symptoms to their memory as they entered menopause. They found the women who were going through the menopausal process scored as well or nearly as well on five different cognitive function tests. Results of the study are to be presented Oct. 4 at the American Neurological Association annual meeting in Toronto."When women go into perimenopause, they don't need to worry about cognitive decline," said Dr. Jong-Ling Fuh, an attending physician at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and an associate professor of Yang-Ming University School of Medicine. The researchers said the myth of memory loss during menopause is a perception some women have because as they w...

A Blood Test to Predict Menopause
2008-05-03 00:35:00
Any woman approaching her 40s knows that time is not on her side when it comes to fertility. A decade before menopause, her chances for having a child begin to dip. But what if women could pinpoint when they will hit menopause, and figure out exactly how many child-bearing years they have left? That's what scientists in the Netherlands have done. Reporting in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, they report that a simple blood test, for a hormone called anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), could help women predict when they will enter menopause, and therefore how to set their fertility timetable.Read more here

Menopause and Hair Loss - What’s The Connection?
2008-04-28 10:41:00
Frequently, it is a very emotional stage in a women’s life at the stage of menopause. As your body switches gears and conforms to changes, you might go through some new sensations that you have never felt before when you were younger. Additional changes might be so subtle that you won’t really feel or notice in any direct way, however the effects that it will have on other parts of your body are so pronounced such as balding or thinning hair. Menopause and hair loss don’t always happen together as a package for all women. You don’t have to concern yourself when it comes to losing your hair by the time you reach the menopausal stage unless there is a strong history of baldness in your family. If your family happens to have a history of baldness in either or both the men and women, menopause and hair loss could go hand in hand in your particular case. Thyroid Function and Hair Loss When you finally reach menopause, your thyroid function is typically impaired. ...
