Ohio Budget Cuts Mental Health Funding
2009-07-15 17:37:00 July 1st was a very important day at the state house in Columbus. It was the day that a balanced state budget had to be passed. As usual, politics got in the way of that and they subsequently passed a 7-day budget as negotiations continued. During week one, the impasse continued, and a second 7-day state budget passed. Negotiations continued....Since I have been in Boston for the past few days, I've been curious to see what was going to happen to the state budget. When I checked the Columbus Dispatch website yesterday, I was surprised that an agreement was reached. In reading the quotes from the politicians, it was a budget that "no one" was happy with." Then, why did you pass it? That confuses me.The big winner was not the citizens of Ohio, but the racetracks of Ohio. Yes, the racetracks - and probably the Governor (when is he up for re-election again?) According to the article "Budget Plan, Keeping Score," "The state's seven horse tracks will get up to 2,500 video lottery termin...

Minnesota's Employment First Movement in Mental Health
2009-03-28 00:09:00 Editorial Note: I recently wrote this newsletter article for Minnesota APSE-The Network on Employment. It will be featured soon in our State Chapter's quarterly newsletter issue. However, I thought I would share it here with my blog readers as well. The State of Minnesota recently issued its annual report for 2008 to the State legislature concerning the employment status of Minnesotans living with serious mental illnesses (SMI). Although we have a long way to go, this status report is rich with data and supports the progress Minnesota is making in clearing pathways to the workforce for its residents with SMI.One of the most exciting trends identified in this 2008 report is Minnesota’s gradual transformation to evidence-based practice, supported employment (EBP-SE) to improve the quality of employment outcomes in the State. EBPs are specific service interventions documented to support success in recovery from SMI through clinical research trials.EBP-SE is one of six EBPs in psychi...
Make Love, Not Stress
2009-02-09 06:57:00 Image by millzero.com via Flickr window.google_render_ad(); The role of stress reduction is important to almost any health plan. Keeping your brain fit is no different. Constant stress, which plagues many in today?s society, causes an elevation of hormones, including cortisol, that can be bad for your health. Now, let?s get something straight before we go any further. Cortisol is not some evil hormone that?s sole job is to make you fat and sick, as many late night infomercials would have you believe. It is a necessary part of your physiology and you would be dead without it. It is part of the flight, fight or fright response which helps you deal with immediate stressors and life-threatening situations. Even when you?re not stressed it plays important roles in vigilance and attention. Controlling cortisol levels with drugs is requires much caution.Problems with cortisol occur when you stay stressed for long periods of time. The cortisol system is designed to turn on to help deal with...

Rural mental health
2008-09-30 20:03:00 A significant proportion of people live and work in rural areas, and rural mental health is important wherever psychiatry is practised. There are inherent difficulties in conducting rural research, due in part to the lack of an agreed definition of rurality. Mental health is probably better in rural areas, with the exception of suicide, which remains highest in male rural residents. A number of aspects of rural life (such as the rural community, social networks, problems with access, and social exclusion) may all have particular implications for people with mental health problems. Further issues such as the effect of rural culture on help-seeking for mental illness, anonymity in small rural communities and stigma may further affect the recognition, treatment and maintenance of mental health problems for people in rural areas. Providing mental health services to remote and rural locations may be challenging. Rural culture and countryside form a significant part of our society. A la...
Mental Health of concern to Denver Convention attendees
2008-08-26 02:04:00 Chatting with convention goers outside the Colorado Convention Center on Sunday August 25 I met Hope Turlington of Raleigh, North Carolina, who has abundant concerns over federal funding for mental health, both in terms of military veterans, and non-military citizens of the USA. She is distrubed by the prospects for returning Iraq vets dealing with mental stress and trauma as a result of service to this country. Hope is deeply concerned about the effects of the scheduled "transition/closing" of the Dorothea Dix Mental Hospital. She pointed out that the great North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms has said that "our sick deserve a view from Dix Hill as much as anybody," yet developers are bidding to take that land away - to turn it into a money maker for a private entity at the expense of people suffering from various forms of acute and/or chronic mental illness. De-institutionalization is not a viable treatment protocol for many of the people who have been diagnosed and committed, ye...
The Case For Mental Health Screening Of Candidates And Electeds
2008-06-03 15:56:00 by Linda Millazo In 1972, after graduating from New York's Queens College, I took the New York State teaching exam. My degrees were in Theater and Speech Communications so I took the exam to teach speech. It was a particularly difficult test since it combined both art and science. The surprisingly good news - after five years of "thespianing," partying and cramming, I passed the written and oral exams. The embarrassingly bad news - I failed MY APPLICATION! My downfall was one simple question: Have you ever used drugs? The application had separate boxes for a simple YES and a simple NO. I simply checked YES!! You see, having gone to school during the drug crazed 60s and 70s, I was convinced my assessors wouldn’t believe my “No” since my wild-hippy-artist-look defined me. Thus I did as any young idealist would – I told the truth – well, the partial truth. I admitted to smoking marijuana, and left it at that. My assessment team was NOT pleased! The reward ...
Long-term daily cannabis use seen harmful to brain tissue, mental health
2008-06-03 09:33:00 Image by Getty Images via DaylifeDr. Yucel says "Many people in the community, as well as cannabis users themselves, believe that cannabis is relatively harmless and should be legally available,"(see Yucel Research link here)This argument is a straw man.The heavy use of cannabis as characterized by this study [5+ daily joints*356*10yrs] would be the extreme exception in consumption. It would be very difficult to find 15 cannabis only consumers in Australia using at this level.(further) This heavy consumption was occurring in a context of absolute prohibition, clear evidence of policy 'efficacy' failure being so predicated on zero tolerance of any harm. But what do we find? A harm association by a correlation only, and as reported elsewhere - no basis for thinking there is cannabis harm causation other than at sub clinical behavioral measures.Remember the UN cannabis related covenants sanctions billions of dollars annually on police, justice, law, and corrections and maintains a cult...

Happy Memorial Day From the Editor of ElderAbuseHelp.Org
2008-05-24 19:48:00 BubbleShare: Share photos - Play some Online Games. This Weekend we all went to swim with some very special animals that are UN believable loving friendly and intelligent creatures, the bond established with these amazing animals is hard to describe. It is said that the brain of these mammals are larger than that of humans, elder abuse is unheard of with these animals, and they communicate with humans in a manner that have been known to save lives as they can sense when something isn't quite right, e.g. pregnancy , and are sensitive to the disposition of humans being attracted to some and avoiding others who exhibit aggressive behavior . People who are trained in "dolphin language" can tell a lot by interacting with these mammals .There are many theories as to how they are able to do this, that's a subject to complex to get into here, we'll leave that for another story and just say for now that sharing a portion of our holiday with these special creatures is an experience we will ...

Mental Health Care Employees Rip Treatment of FLDS Mormon Sect
2008-05-12 19:14:00 When one first reads the headlines of this Houston Chronicle story it seems the mental health community is making war with Texas Child Protective Services over the poor treatment of the FLDS Mormon sect. But reading into the article further one finds that this is really about nine employees who work for a private mental health care agency called Mental Health - Mental Retardation Center (MHMRC) which seem to have ties with Baptist preacher Kevin Dinnin.May I remind you that this is not just Texas this is West Texas where David Koresh is still a hero and clearing brush with Jesus is the major pastime. The area has a religious agenda promoting that anything with Jesus involved is good and any wall between Church and State is evil. These FDLS women, who have individually sold their underage daughters to old married men for sex, and collectively been part of a conspiracy to do so, should have long ago had their pastel frontier garb (with prayers for the end of the world stitche in the s...

What's Love Got to Do With It? (MHM-Mental Health Matters)
2008-05-11 14:46:00 Hey I bet you are saying to yourself what does love got to do with it? That my friend is simple, it?s got everything to do with it! You can?t stand there and tell me or even sit there and tell me that love doesn?t have or play a huge roll in your life!It has everything to do with you. You want to find a mate and be loved, don?t you? Say yes, because I know this to be true. Now why is it are primal interest to love and be loved? When Adam was alone in the Garden of Eden, he got lonely and God in his infinite wisdom, decide to make Adam a mate, from his own rib even. Now why would Adam become lonely in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place? Now do you see were the very first love and be loved took place? That?s right with the very first person and God agreed with him, so he really must have been lonely and wanted to be loved! Now we know for a fact that God loved Adam and perfectly I might add, but why was that not good enough for the human race? It?s simple he felt the need to be loved b...

Trauma: Emotional & Psychological
2008-05-11 06:57:00 Causes, Symptoms, Effects, and Treatment Trauma. The word brings to mind the effects of such major events as war, rape, kidnapping, abuse, torture, or other similar assault. The emotional aftermath of such events, recognized by the medical and psychological communities, and increasingly by the general public, is known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Now there is a new field of investigation that is less familiar, even to professionals: emotional or psychological trauma.Recent research has revealed that emotional trauma can result from such common occurrences as an auto accident, the breakup of a significant relationship, a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience, the discovery of a life-threatening illness or disabling condition, or other similar situations. Traumatizing events can take a serious emotional toll on those involved, even if the event did not cause physical damage.Regardless of its source, an emotional trauma contains three common elements:it was unexpe...

National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is May 8, 2008: "help kids
2008-05-08 12:46:00 Mister Rogers would dispense this simple advice on this very special day: Give unconditional love - Children need to know that your love does not depend on their accomplishments.Nurture confidence and self-esteem - Praise and encourage your children. Set realistic goals. Be honest about your mistakes and avoid sarcasm. Encourage play - Play time is as important to a child's development as food. Play helps children be creative, develop problem-solving skills and self-control, and learn how to get along with others. Enroll children in after-school activities - This is a great way for kids to stay productive, learn something new, gain self-esteem and have something to look forward to during the week. If they are home alone, check in on them after school. Children need to know that even if you're not there physically, you're thinking about them, and interested in how they spend their day. Provide a safe and secure environment - Fear can be very real for a child. Try to fi...

Virtual Communities and the Mental Health Profession
2008-04-23 15:18:00 This article is part three of a series of five that explores interesting, unique and noteworthy trends in the mental health profession. Examining these changes often brings about exciting opportunities if we, as clinicians, are able to look at these new service offerings and competitive influences in unique and creative ways.Virtual Communities and the Use of the Social Networking ModelThe Internet began simply as a way to display and find information. This information was presented in a static manner, meaning there was no functionality - only data. Today's Internet has evolved into a dynamic social medium where people come together to share ideas, meet one another, build relationships and offer support. The impact of social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn has had a powerful effect on the World Wide Web, and this model has now made its way into the area of mental health. One example of this trend at a regional level involves a woman who started a Yahoo Group ...

Sleep Problems Are Likely To Cause Depression And Other Mental Health Probl
2008-04-23 07:43:00 The month of May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Mental Health Association.Mental Health Awareness Month, observed throughout May in the United States, increases awareness about mental illness such as depression. Mental illness is a significant health concern and, if left untreated, can have serious consequences. Depression is the most common mental illness, and recent studies have demonstrated the link between depression and poor sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) warns those suffering from a sleep disorder to see a sleep specialist for treatment without delay, and to not allow it to escalate into a more serious, and potentially life-threatening, health concern. It is now well established that insomnia is a risk factor for depression.Donna Arand, PhD, clinical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Kettering Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and research assistant professor at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, ad...

The Problems In Running A Mental Health Blog
2008-04-19 17:00:00 Over the last few days I have visited quite a few mental health blogs and a number of them are either really slowing down in the number of post or have announced that they are taking a hiatus. I think that every mental health blog tells a unique story and can go along way in the fighting the stigma of mental illness but there are consequences to maintaining a personal mental health site.1. I find to really connect with the reader it is important to share all of the facts and the emotions regarding a specific event or events. The problem with this is focusing on the past can bring up emotions that may have not been properly dealt with and send the monster back into motion. On more then one occasion I have started a post that I felt was important to cover but realized half way through that this was not a good idea for me mentally.2. The reason for posts on this site to suddenly switch to a poetry day or information about this blogs performance is mentally I need to take a break fro...

Mental Health Day
2008-04-15 08:22:00 Wednesday morning was wet. The rain on the tin roof of my turn of the century flat sounded soothing snugged under the warmth and comfort of the duvet. It wouldn’t be cold out of bed, but it wouldn’t be the welcome to the day I wanted. Out of smokes, small change, clean shirts and coffee. The alarm announced office hours, but I just kept buying a fifteen minute snooze ’til well after nine. I didn’t want to play today. Bed sounded best so I sent in a sickie text. The time finally came to climb out of the pit in the early afternoon. My Chemical Romance announced a call around midday. “Paul speaking.” “’Sis Pete. Whatchyou doin.” “Sleeping.” “Sleeping.” mocks Pete. Pete’s a thirty year Black Power veteren. He’s a high ranking enforcer with a long service medal tattooed in the form of a clenched fist on each temple. Not to mention various other cartoons on aforementioned body. “R...
Hooks - Blogs and Mental Health Care
