Appeasement is a Mental Illness
2008-05-14 04:03:00 Who called me chicken?Photo by: mselderhuisArthur Neville Chamberlain was 68 years old when he became Prime Minister of Britain in 1937. Like many who had lived through the horrific years of the Great War, Chamberlain would do anything to avoid going to war again which explains why he bent over backwards for Hitler and took it up the wazoo. In his defense, I should mention that I am now beginning to think that conciliatory cowardice is a mental illness that afflicts old men who have lived through a previous war. This may explain why John Murtha is a cowardly defeatist. Anyone who wants us out of Iraq precisely because he thinks that negotiation and appeasement will work better against our Muslim enemies than a whack over the head has to be mentally ill. What is it about these old farts that turns them into drooling, sniveling, servile knee-bucklers? Infidels are Cool alerts us to this video which shows how negotiation and appeasement win the hearts and minds of UK Mus...

Autism is linked to parents' mental illness and can be inherited from eithe
2008-05-06 03:04:00 In another sign pointing to an inherited component to autism, a study released on Monday found that having a schizophrenic parent or a mother with psychiatric problems roughly doubled a child's risk of being autistic:"Our research shows that mothers and fathers diagnosed with schizophrenia were about twice as likely to have a child diagnosed with autism," said Julie Daniels of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who worked on the study. "We also saw higher rates of depression and personality disorders among mothers, but not fathers," she said in a statement. This is truly an amazing study with widespread implications. The study of families in Sweden with children born between 1977 and 2003 involved 1,227 children diagnosed with autism. They were compared with families of nearly 31,000 children who did not have autism. Sweden's detailed health registry provides a wealth of data for such studies. What are the symptoms of autism? Military And Mental Illness
2008-04-18 18:14:00 There has been a new study that just came out that states 300,000 US troops suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder also an additional 300,000 have suffered brain injuries. Out of these numbers only half have sought out treatment. This works out to 18.5 percent of United States troops are suffering from a mental disorder so roughly one in five. Very scary.(MSNBC article)I wrote the following post near the start of this blog:PTSD - The disorder that is about to explodePost Traumatic Stress Disorder is not a whole heck of a lot of fun. Basic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is watching or experiencing something tragic or along those line, Chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is witnessing or being a part of long term events that have left a major mark on your psyche, think long term abuse or military service on foreign land. The big thing when it comes to either form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is that your constantly haunted by what you sa...
Even the best media can't avoid treating mental illness like a horror show
2008-04-16 11:09:00 Even The Associated Press isn't immune to promoting stigma. Here's a story about a person who's accused of killing his therapist. Count the number of mental health stereotypes that the clever reporter and editor managed to weave into the text. The point is: Can we find another way of describing people with mental illness without resorting to adjectives and verbs that are best reserved for a horror movie? Here's the story (stereotypes are in bold):A lawyer for a mental patient accused of hacking a Manhattan psychotherapist to death with a meat cleaver said Tuesday that his client will offer an insanity defense at his trial.Defense lawyer Bryan Konoski said in Manhattan's state Supreme Court that a psychiatrist he hired to examine murder suspect David Tarloff, 40, said he has "very strong grounds" for a psychiatric defense (above photo: Tarloff).Konoski's court papers say he will offer evidence of Tarloff's "lack of criminal responsibility by reason of mental disease or defect." 2008-04-16 01:11:00 Howdy all! I'm home early today, as I just got through with a Witch Doctor appointment and live on this side of town anyway. As you can tell by the title of this post, I have some thoughts that I'd like to rant about, but FOR FUCK'S SAKE where do I begin? I mean, in the past I have described the offices of my San Diego and Dallas Witch Doctors with fleeting bits of criticism (I'm too lazy to go trolling through my archives to find the link, yet I do recall thinking that the chair cushions in one of the offices were uncomfortable...hehe), but truth be told, they were damn alright in my book.Let's begin with arriving at the building which houses my current psychiatrist. Just how fucking welcoming does it feel to be met with 2 doors leading in: one heavily-reinforced and emblazoned in bold with "STAFF ONLY" and the other, which is quite rickety, stating "Patients - No smoking, No food, No beverages"? Gee, nice way to get started off, by being put squarely in my place, eh?Well, thi...

Longer combat tours increase risks of mental illness
2008-03-10 10:30:00 Could longer combat tours increase risks of mental illness? It might be of no surprise, but government medics have found that the longer soldiers stay in combat, the more likely they are to have mental problems. Soldiers with three or more combat tours aren’t getting enough down time between deployment, according to the results from the just-released 2007 Mental Health Advisory Team study. The team surveyed 2,300 soldiers returning from their third tour from Iraq and nearly 700 more from Afghanistan. They found that noted nearly 28 percent of soldiers returning from their third tour showed signs of significant stress and mental health problems, which was significantly higher than the roughly 18 percent seen in troops returning from their first or second deployment, reports Stars And Strips. Col. Charles Hoge, director of psychiatry at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, told members of a Senate health panel Wednesday that at least part of the problem is the recovery time f...

Social Phobia - normal human experience or mental illness?
2008-03-04 07:23:00 Social Phobia - which is basically severe and acute shyness - is an incredibly common phenomena. But is there any real point in labelling severe shyness as a mental illness? Does it in fact make it more ingrained in the psyche? Some people would argue that if you give someone a label and a stigmata that says "you have social phobia" it is a bit like telling them they have cancer, no matter how they were feeling before, they suddenly feel a lot worse. Why? Because conditions tend to feel permanent. Emotions are always transitory. Even if you think you always feel depressed, or stressed, actually there are times when you don't and times when those emotions are present only to a slight extent. But conditions feel permanent so it may not be helpful to tell people they "have" something rather than "are feeling" something. On the other hand, if there is no label and no recognisable condition, then people who suffer from acute shyness are repeatedly told t...

Stigmas of mental illness remain
2008-02-23 16:32:00 Five times he called her a "loon" or "lunatic." Each time, the peace activist reacted to Bill O'Reilly's name-calling with a shrug or smirk. But this encounter on "The O'Reilly Factor" raised the question: Who was more outrageous? Was it O'Reilly for using words that some might interpret as slurs? Or was it the activist for not taking him to task? For a long time, words and images that define mental illness have been used to describe a person who holds a differing opinion as out of line or evil.Mental health professionals recoil when they hear such talk or see such pictures. Now they're speaking out to stop the use of words and images that stigmatize people who suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.Otto Wahl, a psychology professor at the University of Hartford, says that despite years of advances in mental health awareness, the media still rely on stereotypes to sell books, magazines, news-papers, movies and TV shows. In his boo...

Why America is jailing people with mental illness
2008-02-19 14:56:00 You may not know Jacquie, personally. But if you've been in a northern New Jersey restaurant, you may have seen or heard her. She's known for her scratchy, high-pitched voice, and she has a habit of going into dining places, eating a meal, and not being able to pay."She'll eat a big meal and say, 'I don't have any money,' and they arrest her," said Robin Reilly, an advocate for the homeless who has helped Jacquie. That's about as dangerous as Jacquie gets. But if that's true, then why has she been to jail nearly 30 times?Because Jacquie has mental illness. Plain and simple. There are thousands more who live this kind of vicious cycle. When they show the most extreme symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, they don't go to a nice clean hospital room, with a window and TV, for treatment. They end up in a concrete cell with bars, a bed, and a toilet. If they don't go there, many end up dead - like Stephen Kazmierczak, the man responsible for killing ...

How Teenage Rebellion Has Become a Mental Illness
2008-01-29 04:58:00 For a generation now, disruptive young people who rebel against authority figures have been increasingly diagnosed with mental illnesses and medicated with psychiatric (psychotropic) drugs.Disruptive young people who are medicated with Ritalin other amphetamines routinely report that these drugs make them "care less" about their boredom, resentments and other negative emotions, thus making them more compliant and manageable. And so-called atypical antipsychotics such as Risperdal and Zyprexa -- powerful tranquilizing drugs -- are increasingly prescribed to disruptive teenagers, even though in most cases they are not displaying any psychotic symptoms.Read the full article at Alternet

Britney may have a mental illness, but she's only human
2008-01-23 15:14:00 It's no wonder that Britney Spears' obituary has already been written. Anyone would struggle to survive with paparazzi preying on their every move, ready to pounce and pop flashbulbs that blind their eyes. With the exception of that self-proclaimed master of mental healing - otherwise known as "Dr. Phil" - well-studied health professionals and advocates say a hostile, chaotic environment can only exacerbate a person's declining mental state. They look at how the media - and not just the so-called illegitimate tabloid kind that fills supermarket shelves - have almost self-created Britney's demise by goading her and baiting her into behaving in a bizarre way so they can be there if - or, quite possibly, when - the end comes.Debra Wentz, chief executive officer of the New Jersey Association of Mental Health Agencies, said common sense dictates that media pressure "can certainly stress anyone out, and so that added pressure on someone who is vulnerable can lead to more symptomatic beh...

Does Britney have a mental illness, and is her condition grave?
2008-01-21 21:51:00 Now the talk is that Britney Spears has multiple personality disorder. Or that she's ready to die.But much of that talk comes from wanna-be pop psychologists (as well as Dr. Phil, who fits that category - the only difference being that he has a degree). Many people of this ilk are in the media, each of whom have come up with their own diagnosis for a fallen pop star who has been shadowed and harassed by a band of mosquito-like paparazzi - their media colleagues - for two years now.TMZ and US Weekly are always ready to jump on the Britney-assault bandwagon, swooping overhead like a vulture who's ready to pounce on the dead carcass. Here is the latest news from both publicity mags/websites that appears to over-hype what is a common practice engaged by all respectable news organizations:"Britney Spears hasn't died, but the Associated Press has an obituary already written, should something happen to the "at-risk" former pop star.TMZ spoke to AP Entertainment Editor Jesse Washington wh...

Mental illness & Personal Responsibility in the Britney Spears Breakdow
2008-01-05 03:20:00 Britney Spears has predictably lost visitation rights for her two children, Jayden James, 1, and Sean Preston, 2, after her very public breakdown that followed a hostage situation in which she locked herself in a bathroom for over three hours and refused to hand over her youngest child. She has temporarily lost all visitation by court order until another hearing can be held on January 14. The issue of whether Britney should be held accountable for her actions is a contentious one, with many people claiming that Britney is insane and deserves our pity, not our condemnation. How much of Britney’s behavior is she personally responsible for? There’s a lot of debate in the Britney Spears case as to which behavior she’s personally responsible for and what can be chalked up to mental illness. This isn’t a new issue, and the answer isn’t black and white. She’s clearly mentally unstable, and might meet diagnostic criteria for a specific mental disorder, ...

The greatest story ever told (about mental illness)
2007-12-02 07:14:00 There are stories on mental illness that inform, educate but don't connect with the people. Many reporters will tell you: It's the one subject they hate writing about more than any other.Once every 10 years, however, somebody like Michael Winerip of The New York Times, comes along and writes a piece that reads like a lyrical poem. Word for word, you can sense the passion he has for the subject. And the end result is that the reader has passion, too, because they find a way to relate - and even be entertained. And maybe they can spur - and even shame - public officials to act, as Winerip did after this May 23, 1999 piece, entitled "Bedlam in the Streets," was published in The New York Times Magazine. Then-Gov. George Pataki of New York ordered a complete review and modest overhaul of the state's mental health system. Here is the story - and it deals with Andrew Goldstein, who was notorious for pushing a 32-year-old woman to her death on a subway platform eight years ago:Bedlam on the...

Identify the mental illness before the tragedy takes place
2007-11-05 19:17:00 It doesn't usually happen with physical illnesses. Before the problem becomes severe, there's a diagnosis. But time and again, mental health issues aren't discovered until the worst effects appear. They're issues that not often - but sometimes - lead to tragedy.Recently, an 18-year-old opened fire at Delaware State University; a 14-year-old in Ohio shot four students and teachers before committing suicide and another 14-year-old was arrested for allegedly plotting a shooting spree at a Philadelphia high school. And then, of course, there was Virginia Tech.Cho Seung Hui, the shooter in the mass killing that took place earlier this year, may not have had a serious mental illness relative to other diagnoses, as the National Alliance on Mental Illness pointed out. But the possibility opens the door for reflection on the nature of mental illnesses, how to deal with them and what can be done in the future to prevent such tragedies, mental health experts say.In New Jersey, the Safe Schoo...

Bahamian Culture And Mental Illness In The Bahamian Community
2007-10-30 02:42:00 Fixing To Make A Change: By Kermit B. Fernander, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: People the world over have perhaps understood or accepted physical illness far more readily than they have ever understood or accepted mental illness. Indeed, as far back as the time of Christ, any illness or condition for which there was no obvious physical cause was simply attributed to possession by demons or evil spirits. End of story! What is remarkable is that, in our day, the Bahamian culture is one of many that still cling to outdated myths about mental illness and, for this reason, significant stigma is attached to mental illness and to people affected by mental illness. And in The Bahamas it continues to be shrouded in myth and mystery. While local mental health care professionals believe that Bahamians have come a long way, they also believe that there is still a long way to go in our understanding and acceptance of mental illness. "Bahamians are very well informed about...

They whom consume and enjoy are indistinguishable from non-pot smokers by no more than they enjoy pot. Whereas those who think pot smokers should all be in jail are indeed delusional and dangerous; not so much because I (and many others) believe you could ever be effective in achieving that goal, but that ON EVIDENCE better men than you have tried and failed to put all the pot smokers in jail. Average length of hospital stay higher for mental illness patients
2007-10-12 03:18:00 October 11, 2007--A new annual report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information shows that in 2004-2005 patients diagnosed with mental illness represented 6% of all general hospital discharges or deaths (separations) in Canada, but 13% of all inpatient days. This is due to the fact that, on average, mental illness patients had longer stays in general hospitals (17 days) compared to other patients (7 days). The average length of stay was even longer for those in psychiatric hospitals (109 days, excluding Quebec data).During the same period, mood disorders were the primary diagnoses in over a third (34%) of all mental illness separations for general and psychiatric hospitals combined, followed by schizophrenic and psychotic disorders (21%) and substance-related disorders (16%). The mood-disorder diagnosis group was the largest for all provinces and territories, with the exception of the Northwest Territories, where the substance-related disorder group was the largest.Hospital...
