More Merlot Please!

I unabashedly love a good California Merlot. The problem is, it's often hard to find a good one given Merlot's bad rap and tendency towards flabby overoaked plonk. So when I find a good one I feel like shouting from the rooftops. This is one such Merlot. The bottle was a 2003 Raymond Reserve Merlot from Napa. It clocked in at 14.3% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and was a gift from my Dad. My first thought on the wine was that it needed time to air, but after that it opened up into a really beautiful bottle of wine.On the nose I found plum, blackberries, black pepper, chocolate, red cherry, and raspberries. It was a gorgeous combination of red and black fruit topped with chocolate. In the mouth I got more red fruit, cherries, raspberries, and then some plums and blackberries. The cherry was quite tart, like a fresh cherry pie.The wine had plenty of structure and backbone to spare, I could easily see it holding up for many more years if you want to stash it away. ...

The wine for the night was a 2005 "La Colombaia" Valpolicella Ripasso. I'm scratching my head to figure out where this one came from. Apparently I paid $18.99 for it, which leads me to believe that perhaps it came from the Winery in Old Town Alexandria. It had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14% alcohol by volume, hails from Italy, and is made from Merlot. The nose of the wine showed raisins, currants, spices, plums, earth, and cherries. In the mouth I found tart cherries, raisins, earth, and spice. After a little while a touch of plum showed through. The wine continued to open up in the glass, showing a lot of depth. This was an easy drinking wine, very yum, and incredibly food friendly. A quick search reveals you can find it online for about $15.99.
WBW #44 French Cabernet Franc
2008-04-02 13:34:00
Our host for this edition of WBW, the brain-child of Lenn of Lenndevous, is Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. He chose French Cabernet Franc as theme for this month (ostensibly as a result of his recent trip tasting in France!). You can watch his vlog about the event here, but the jist is pick a French Cabernet Franc and post your link by April 2, 2008 in the comments to the entry on his website.I'll admit straight up that I sorta cheated on this one. Having been in travel mode since before Gary's theme announcement, I really didn't have much of a chance to pick up a bottle for this month or shop around. I popped into my favorite local shop, The Winery in Old Town Alexandria, and sadly could not come up with a full on Cabernet Franc. So I went with a 25% Cabernet Franc, 70% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux style blend. The wine is a 2004 Chateau Quercy Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. It clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and cost me $25.99. T...

Mellow, soft, and very tasty. While it doesn't have great depth or intensity, it is an all around 'great' drinking and companion wine. Pick a young immature sprite to drink this with. And at this price, it also good for a night of carousing. read more

AKA-Live in Sonoma County! Our bed and breakfast (at least the one we are in tonight) has free wireless so I am able to keep blogging for you while we are away! The wine for the evening was the 2003 Lava Cap 2003 Reserve Merlot from El Dorado. It clocked in at 15.1% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and cost us $19.99 from WineQ (free shipping!).On the nose I found berries, plums, spices, dark fruit, currants, and chocolate. In the mouth, more berries, currants, and plums. The wine was fruity with a bit of a darker earthy undertone, and still had a bit of a tannic edge.I thought this was a really fun, fruity Merlot, and another great effort from Lava Cap. For this price, I would definitely get this again and consider it as a staple for serving with pizza or tomato based pasta dishes.

One evening at my parents' house, a lot of wine was consumed in one evening. We had around 10 people at the house and the wine was flowing all evening.I believe this was the second bottle of the evening. We started with a Sauvignon Blanc, but my Aunt didn't like it and requested a Merlot. I just happened to have a Merlot blend on hand! The wine was a Chateau Rocher Corbin 2002 Montagne Saint Emillion. I purchased it for $18.99 minus a 10% case discount at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria, it had a real cork closure, and clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume. The wine was a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose I found dark fruit, blackberries, oak, and black currants. In the mouth the flavors were of black currants, plums, and other dark fruit. The wine was tannic and a bit chewy in the mouth, this was definitely a wine that would benefit from being consumed with food. We finished the bottle up over a roast turkey and all the fixin...

Trecini 2005 Vicini Vineyard Russian River Valley Sonoma County Merlot
2007-12-28 23:20:00
It is not very often that I buy a Merlot but when I saw the Trecini 2005 Vicini Vineyard Russian River Valley Merlot as a half bottle I had to give it a try.Trecini Cellars was founded in 1999 by John and Cathy Vicini and their son David. Originally from Tuscany, Italy, John comes from a long tradition of wine, actually around 150 years. In 1994 the family started growing grapes in Russian River Valley and after that it was only a natural step for them to start their own winery. They are offering five varietals at this point, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Merlot Rose, Zinfandel, and Syrah. This Merlot shows an intense ruby red color in the glass. The nose offers ripe red fruit, herbal notes and rather heavy vanilla with creme brulee character. On the palate, bright fruit with slight tartness, black cherry, boysenberry, plum, and vanilla. The long finish has plentiful fruit, decent acidity, and round, soft tannins with an ever so light green edge at the finish.I was pleasantly surprised by t...

Village Winery in VA, that is. I picked this bottle up at Village Winery on our tour this summer, it cost $17, clocked in at 12% alcohol by volume, had a fake cork, and I believe it is NV, or at least I can't find any vintage info on the bottle. On the nose I found spice, smoke, leather, and raspberries. Oddly enough, I also smelled what I can only describe as fireworks after you've shot them off. In the mouth the wine was fruit, light and pleasant, showing raspberries and a bitter chocolate essence. Overall, a little tannic and a little too sweet to go with the pasta and fresh tomato sauce.

CollePino 2005 Sangiovese & Merlot Italy

Bob is off having his tail chased, or was that chasing tail? Either way, he won't be joining us tonight for this review. So, work with me here and in my best Bacchus voice: Yes, this has very little leggings. With a very nice deep ruby colour. I do smell some soft berry notes, but can't identify which ones. After tasting, I'm unable to taste the berries, so I still can't identify what berry it might have been. It is harsh, a bit bitter, and if I didn't usually just swill wines I might be able to tell you if it was tannins or turpentine for a finish. Frankly I thought the Italians did better than this. Okay, enough of trying to do Bacchus' job, I don't think I have the pallet. read more
MERLOT 2001 Warmblood, TB Bay Gelding READY TO G0!
2007-12-02 13:08:00
MUST SELL!! Merlot is a 2001 bay gelding. Very attractive warmblood cross. Sire (Red Clay Tributary) is an interesting mix of Selle Francais/Hanovarian/ Quarter Horse, dam was a Thoroughbred (Deniwaji). Makes him a true warmblood! He has great warmblood gaits and has a very friendly attitude. He trailers well, has done trails that include bridges, rivers, hills.. etc. Loves slogging through water! Very easy keeper. He lives outside with other horses and has been good in company. He is a homebred that has been kept up on all vaccinations, dentistry, health care (veterinarian owned). Lack of time and family changes forces sale. Merlot is ready to train your way. He has been casually used since he was 2.5 years old and ready for a 'career'. Green to formal work. Not for a raw beginner due to needed training. I see him fitting in well for dressage, jumping, fox hunting, or a very fancy trail horse! He's been ridden english, looks great western too! Nice horse for the price.

Chateau St Jean 1996 Sonoma County Reserve Merlot
2007-11-02 03:07:00
Today I am doing a quick review of a wine we had a couple of nights ago with good friends. We bought this bottle at the winery as a library wine, I would guess about 5 years ago. This was our only bottle, and this is the first time we have tasted this wine (they did not pour it at the winery when we purchased it). 400 cases was made.Chateau St Jean 1996 Sonoma County Reserve Merlot has a dark ruby red/brick color in the glass. The nose displays surprisingly concentrated fruit with dark cherry, plum, slight notes of raisin, and soft vanilla. On the palate, plum, cherry, and dark raspberry with an earthy note. The tannins are moderate and silky, but still with an edge, in this medium to fullbodied wine.My impression of this wine is close to what I had expected. With a little bit more fruit/berries then I thought would still remain (which is a good thing), this was certainly a very good, but not a great wine. For the price you can find better wine but I would not rule this one out if yo...

A Great Value - A Great Merlot
2007-10-18 15:56:00
Lately, I have been in this mode of sampling Walla Walla wines priced under $30 a bottle and is it ever paying off! The good news is I keep discovering wines that are top quality for the dollar. One of the Valley’s great value is from Lowden Hills Winery. Lowden Hills is a family winery owned by Jim and Sonja Henderson. A highlight about the Walla Walla Valley is if you were born and/or raised here, you just about know or related to everyone. Back in high school, Sonja and I co-chaired a high school girl’s league committee together. And have continued to keep in touch.Besides a family winery, Lowden Hills also produces estate wines from their Win Chester Vineyards located outside of Lowden, WA. Named after Sonja’s late stepfather, Win Estes, the Estes family were wheat farmers and homesteaded in the Walla Walla Valley since the late 1800's.The historic barn, now winery, seems fitting considering the Lowden Hills Winery’s family history. The barn was built in 1938 and has bee...

Valle De CasablancaChilePaso Robles, I am SO glad you found the Phantom as alluring as myself. You are a lucky dog that you've got yourself a case.Might drink again.Note: I have posted two reviews tonight. Please see my review below of Clos du Bois 2004 Chardonnay.OK - This is very funny to me. With regard to the Phantom wine that I reviewed a few nights ago (the same wine I also refer to above in my comment to Paso Robles) I read an on-line review while looking where I might purchase it. The person loved Phantom, but one of their "tastes" they picked up was "Creosote". I made all kinds of comments to The Guy about whether or not he thought that person climbed into their fireplace and licked the back wall to actually know what creosote tastes like. Now, I know fully well in the back of my head that I have smelled weird things in wine that I have not actually tasted in real life (cat pee comes to mind for instance). So I really do know better than to poke fun at a strange taste. But...
"Emozioni dal Mondo: Merlot e Cabernet insieme", sarà vero?
2007-09-21 00:00:00

The Little Penguin 2005 Merlot
2007-09-18 04:19:00
2005MerlotSouth Eastern AustraliaWill drink again. I'm continually pleased with the continent of Australia's ability to produce wine.If you are looking for an easy, drinkable, slightly sweeter than dry red table wine, for less than $10, this wine is where it's at. It's on the lighter side, so I wouldn't serve it on a "serious" night, but it's highly drinkable and pleasant. It would go well I would think with either grilled chicken or pizza in general. I drank it alone (no food, and like George Thorogood too).Interestingly enough, its bouquet was butter and sugar corn on the cob for me followed by a sweet cherry (think candied like Maraschino, not an all natural cherry). Although I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "breathing" thing, I found this wine slightly more enjoyable after it sat open in my glass for an hour by accident while I tucked little ones in to bed to dream of butterflies and flowers and hearts, and one bigger one in to bed - the gothic princess, to dream o...
Wine from Switzerland? And White Merlot?
2007-08-13 14:38:00
Egads, the world must be coming to an end! Now, as strange as a White Merlot, and one from Switzerland at that, sounds, the wine geek in me could not pass up this bottle of wine. I saw it on the menu and went, huh, White Merlot? Now that's a new one. And to me it is, I had never heard of such a thing. We ventured to Il Porto Ristorante with my inlaws last week in Old Town, Alexandria. We haven't really had the time (or money) to check out many restaurants in our 'hood yet, but we were in the mood for Italian and they had open tables when we wanted, so off we went. And not a bad choice at all! The food was very tasty and reasonably priced, I had the fettucini alfredo. I know, a heart attack on a plate, yada yada yada, but I really don't care, I love the stuff and only get it perhaps twice a year. The wine was a Ticino Chiar di Luna 2005 Bianco di Merlot. It is from V&D Angelo Delea SA, Losone-Swizzera. I gathered from the label that it is from the Italian Alps region ...

Pied Violet 2002 Central Coast Merlot
2007-07-10 16:05:00
Pied Violet literally means "purple foot" in French and refers to the old tradition on stomping grapes for the crush. This 2002 Central Coast Merlot shows a dark red/purple color in the glass. On the nose dark cherry and plum with a whiff of spicy oak leaves an impression. Taking my first sip red and dark cherries with plum, spice and a touch of cranberry, hits me. Moderate acidity and soft, smooth tannins makes this wine extremely accessible and drinkable. Great on its own or pair it with some summer BBQ, like a pork tenderloin, not to spicy sausage, or a flank steak. We received this wine as a gift (thanks Mindy!) and there is only one site online where I could find it available, WineShopAtHome.com. You can find it there for $15.50. When taking price into account I think this is a great soft/smooth, easy-to-drink, summer red, no greater complexity to it but not in any way to thin, that will prove to be a great crowd pleaser at any event.Vote for my blog here and help me stay in top ...

Columbia-Crest Merlot

Grand EstatesColumbia Valley2003 and 2004Would drink 2004 again, and maybe try another bottle of 2003 to see if what I experienced was just a corked wine for that particular bottle.Silence can be torturous and deafening, it's numbing her ears today.Wanting to do what's best, hoping instinct is leading the right way.Relinquishing to Washington State, she pours a glass of Columbia-Crest.Following Kevin Zraly's once-a-week recommended list, I bought a bottle of Columbia-Crest Merlot last week when I also purchased the Kendall Jackson Chardonnay (also one of the list's once-a-week wine recommendations). I thoroughly enjoyed it as a glass on its own unaccompanied by any food. I don't remember what I did eventually have to eat with it, but it tasted better all alone. This week I thought I purchased the same vintage (2004) but didn't notice until I got home and poured a glass that it was actually 2003. The taste was much different which is what made me go back and study both bottles t...
Decant this!
2007-06-06 20:56:00
This wine needs to come with a warning: decant before attempting to drink or risk lighting yourself on fire with the fumes. The wine itself is a 2002 Mazzocco Merlot.Weighing in at 15% alcohol by volume, the bottle had a real cork and cost us $25 at the winery.
