the Impetus of Dreams By Daniel Merriam
2008-04-21 06:13:00
Daniel Merriam's paintings are dreams in full color that invite the viewer to join a journey into the imagination, where the worlds of reality and fantasy collide in an explosion of color, shapes and symbolism. Born in 1963 in York, Maine, Merriam grew up in Naples, a rural town within the vast, quiet spaces of Central Maine.

Stomp - Merriam Theater
2008-02-19 22:40:00
At Alma De Cuba for Drinks after the showMaking it's one week only engagement in Philly, STOMP at the Merriam Theater Dec. 26 through Jan. 2It?s always nice to take in a show with a group of friends. So when one of my girlfriends recommended we all get together for dinner, a show and drinks I was like, let?s go.It was kind of a rough week for me (I was broke) so I skip dinner and met up with them at the theater to see STOMP. A show I been meaning to see ever since it hit Broadway fifteen years ago.Merriam Theater is a small theater, so I never saw the point in buying front roll tickets, so we got the cheap seats, which were fine. I was able to see everything.STOMP, is a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, I enjoyed the show so much, that my girlfriends and I wanted to start up our own show???well sort of.Only thing about STOMP, it reminded me a lot of the Fraternities Step Shows that have been performed for last 50 or so years by Africans Americans. So it ...

Merriam-Webster word of the year isn?t even a word
2007-12-14 06:24:00
So, Merriam-Webster conducted a poll of what their visitors thought the word of the year was. w00t… w-zero-zero-t This isn’t a word people, it’s a sound. It’s like the dictionary adding “d’oh” from The Simpsons, it annoys me as it is not a real word. Sounds should not be in the dictionary, I’m sorry, but I just ... 'w00t' is Merriam-Webster's word of the yearFiled under: Culture Merriam-Webster (you know, that dictionary company) announced its word of the year is "w00t." And that sound you now hear is millions of English teachers screaming out in terror. The leading US dictionary stated that the word is like saying "yay" and was selected after Merriam-Webster website users were invited to vote on 20 words frequently looked-up or submitted by readers. The runner-up word was "facebook" as a verb, which means to add or search for a person on a social networking site. The etymology of "w00t" is still a little messy. Some say it's a combination of wow and loot, others say it comes from hoot, but the zero replacing the letter o definitely comes from l33t speak. English sticklers can rest easy for now, but the day will come when companies pwn each other in the Wall Street Journal and someone makes a newb of themselves on the front page of the New York Times. w00t!Read | Permalink- |...

According to Merriam-Webster Inc., "w00t", commonly spelled with two zeros, reflects a new direction in the American language, with video games and text messaging leading a generation. Webster's definition of "w00t" says that its hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness or triumph. "It shows a really interesting thing that's going on in language. It's a term that's arrived only because we're now communicating electronically with each other," said Merriam-Webster's president, John Morse. "People look for self-evident numeral-letter substitutions: 0 for O; 3 for E; 7 for T; and 4 for A. This is simply a different and more efficient way of representing the alphabetical character," he said. Read the full article

Crunk Really Ain't Dead: Word Makes It Into Merriam-Webs

The word "crunk" is one of roughly 100 new additions to "Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary," joining "speed dating," "telenovela" and "ginormous" in linguistic immortality.

What is next? Are Obama and Clinton going to just make out and declare their love for one another, proclaiming that they eloped to Vegas to get hitched at the next Democratic debate? What I’m griping about now is the fact that Merriam-Webster, the pre-eminent source for defining proper English vernacular has included the word “crunk” in their 2007 edition!!!! “Crunk” will be defined as “a style of Southern Rap” in Merriam Websters 2007 edition which, to the best of my knowledge, is an incorrect definition at that! If one takes a stroll over to the Urban Dictionary (which is where a word like CRUNK belongs - i mean, seriously…Merriam-Webste-rs?), he/she finds that “Crunk” is defined as “a mixture of the words Crazy and Drunk” - approved by 5097 urban dictionaryites. My favorite definition, however, is that of “racer” from Ogden, Utah who defines Crunk as: 5. crunk 875 up, 672 down ...
