Metadata: Microsoft?s Underworld
2008-06-01 12:29:00
Many users of Microsoft Word have heard talk about something called metadata, a mysterious compilation of data that reveals previous versions of a document, who worked on the document throughout its history and the various dates when the article was edited. Some treat these rumors with about as much credibility as others regard UFO?s. A ...
Revisit-After META Tag - Metadata Elements
2008-05-24 17:31:00
The revisit-after META tag is not supported by any major search engines, it never was supported and probably never will be. <meta name="revisit-after" content="15 days“> The correct syntax for the META revisit-after is shown above and below. It is specified in the number of days. For example, if you need to specify an interval of 3 months, the correct syntax would be specified in days, not months… <meta name="revisit-after" content="93 days“>

Into Digital Photography? Check out Microsoft Pro Photo Tools V1
2008-05-02 01:17:00
Microsoft today has made available a new tool for photographers using Windows for their digital photos: Microsoft Pro Photo Tools V1. This application lets you quickly edit the metadata on digital photos you've shot with your camera - including RAW formats. Microsoft Pro Photo Tools also allows photographers to use geotagging for their photos. Geotagging is the ability to "tag" something with location information - and in the case of photos the location of where your photo was taken. You can quickly add location data from a GPS device or Live Search Maps to a photo's metadata. Download: Microsoft Pro Photo Tools V1 (x86) I use Windows Live Photo Gallery to manage all my photos. I'd like to note that changes in any specific photo' s metadata using Microsoft Pro Photo Tools will be reflected of course in Windows Live Photo Gallery - including title and tags. You'll see here I've added a title, description, and keywords (aka tags) in Microsoft Pro Photo Tools to one of my pho...
Metadata Marketing
2008-02-22 19:18:00
As we do more and more things online, we leave more digital real-time data trails. Especially when we actively participate in generating content on various websites (writing blogs, participating on social networking sites, using online chat or VOIP, using GPS, scheduling meetings online), but also if we just passively post our personal profile on various websites. The data trails combined from various digital sources will create “massive universe of metadata” (see: Jan Chipchase, article in Harvard Business Magazine), which will have important privacy implications, but it will also present great opportunities for marketers. According to Jan Chipchase, for example, we will be able to figure our where the greatest concentration of our target demographics at any particular point of time is, and not only that, but also we can read their current emotions… so we can create and place our ads accordingly… Wow, this is great! No, wait, this is actually scary!? Waht do ...
Revisiting: Does the World Need a Metadata Extraction Service?
2008-02-18 10:38:00
11 months ago I posted a short entry that posed the question of whether the world needed a metadata extraction service. I stated that the service could quickly become the largest repository of metadata (in the form of named entites and facts) on the Web if it stored the resulting metadata from each request. Open Calais seems to me to be the "metadata extraction service" I had in mind; it's is a Web service that allows you to automatically annotate content and extract information like facts and named entities (people, places, and organizations, and much more) from unstructured text. If that weren't enough of a good thing, Open Calais returns the metadata in RDF. Although the question of whether we need it still hasn't been answered, I believe this service could be a catalyst for change towards Semantic Web standards if it is integrated into (or used to create plugins for) the multitudes of open source blogs and other CMS software. Open Calais opens the door to the possibility o...

Cinematic Metadata
2008-01-02 14:00:00
I had a recent opportunity to spend a long lunch with seminal New Media theorist and practitioner Lev Manovich discussing all manner of topics and ideas related to New Media aesthetics. In particular Lev prompted me towards a notion of thinking of cinema in broader IT terms - of visual information as 'data-sets'. This idea really set my intellectual hamster among the pigeons and the result that sprang forth was a new frame work to re-consider the taxonomy by which we discuss cinema aesthetics."There is a misconception we are surrendering something of art to a technology that will do it for us. That is never the case, Cinema IS technology."Francis Ford CoppolaWhilst this statement has irrefutably always been true the digital age has made the distinction between Cinema Technology and broader categories of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) distinctly vague and indeed arguably irrelevant.Simply put, where once the tools and technology of cinema production were unique and s...

Import SQL Table’s Metadata in PI 7.1
2008-01-02 08:01:00
In PI 7.0 and XI 3.0, we have been able to import the metadata from RFCs and IDOCs from SAP. Many times, we wish we can also import metadata from SQL tables we wish to access also. This will eliminate a lot of typing and typo-mistakes. This feature is now available with PI 7.1. The only requirement is that we have to have a JDBC receiver communication channel. Mozilla Weave to send your metadata to the cloud
2007-12-23 22:35:00
One of the keys to the ThirdPipe changing the environment is portability access. When the device type is not critical to the information resource all sorts of things can happen. Well another tool is being developed that may help in some small part in getting there. The tool is called Weave from Mozilla Labs. The whole point of Weave is to be able to access data sets using the meta data headers as a clue. Then present this data to browsers with appropriate plugs to view that data. The website provides some use cases for Weave – 1. Automatic backup and restore - Dan’s hard drive has died. Like many folks, Dan had never gotten around to getting that backup solution he knew he needed. Dan feels miserable when he thinks of all the software he needs to install, the stuff he’s lost, and all the account names and passwords he’ll never remember. Then he realizes that his family photos, email and calendar are all hosted online, as well as all of the services he uses to...

The Importance of MetaData in SharePoint
2007-11-01 13:25:00
In SharePoint, metadata is good.  Metadata is very good.  "That's great," you say, "but what the heck is metadata?" Metadata is data about your data.  Got it?  Good, I'm glad you're going along with me on that. Ok, ok.  Metadata is information you attach to your SharePoint content that provides contextual clues to the subject, audience, and/or intent of your content.  For an example of metadata, you need to look no further than this blog post.  At the end of it, you'll see that I've applied some "tags" to this post that summarize some of the topics I touch on in this blog post.  Because while the title of this blog summarizes the main topic of the post, it doesn't tell the reader that I'm talking about documents, search, collaboration sites and lists.  The tags I've put on this post do tell you that I mention those topics in this post and give you a better idea of what it cover...

Metadata or Hyperdata, Link or Thread, What is a Web of Data?
2007-10-22 21:56:00
After the last post about "web of agents", I received a few questions about the "web of data." A few readers mistook my argument to be opposite of a web of data. Don't get me wrong, I have never been opposed to the presentation of a "web of data." I only emphasize that the web-of-data presentation is short of describing the human-web relationship in the Semantic Web. To encourage the engagement of more ordinary people to the grand vision of the Semantic Web, we need a more user-oriented presentation, i.e. a web of agents. In order to balance my own arguments, however, in this post I express my understanding of a web of data. The Semantic Web will certainly be a web of data after it is realized. But how this web of data is connected, what the structure of this web of data will be; the answers to these questions are varied to different people. I am glad to share my answers to the readers of Semantic Focus. Metadata, Hyperdata, Web of Data When we think of a web of data, two ter...

Accessing Interbase/Firebird Metadata in Delphi
2007-09-06 13:43:00
WARNING: Interbase and Firebird system tables are not for the faint hearted. It is not recommended that you alter anything in these tables if you ever want to use them again - and keep your job. Major stuff-ups can occur.I was looking at some old Delphi 7 code of mine when I was attempting to get in behind the scenes of Interbase and Firebird tables and fields to learn a little more about them. I came across these little pieces of information I'd like to share. The following will list all the tables in one grid and, for each table, list all the fields in another grid. Drop on your TIBDatabase and direct it at your Interbase or Firebird server. Now drop a TIBTransaction, TIBQuery, TDataSource, and a TDBGrid and connect them all. Enter the following query into the IBQuery1... SELECT DISTINCT RDB$RELATION_NAME as MyTable FROM RDB$RELATION_FIELDS WHERE RDB$SYSTEM_FLAG=0 AND RDB$VIEW_CONTEXT IS NULL ORDER BY RDB$RELATION_NAMEand make IBQuery1 live. Now drop on another TDBGrid, TIBQu...
Flash Video adds H.264, metadata support
2007-08-23 00:38:00
Niall Kennedy has the news on all sorts of goodies in the beta version of Flash Player: Yesterday Adobe released a beta version of its Flash Player browser plugin capable of decoding H.264 video, AAC audio, and associated rich metadata. Web browsers utilizing Flash 9.0.60.184 or higher will now be able to playback content encoded for digital television, iPods, and high-end mobile phones using international standards. Adobe's support for these standardized audio and video codes will streamline the production process for desktop and web video, hopefully reducing time-to-market and opening more video catalogs to online viewers. A beta version of the new player, Flash Player 9 Update 3 Beta 2 "Moviestar", is available from Adobe Labs. I'm hoping this means we can just encode for H.264 (aka MPEG4) and have it play with Flash player widgets, without having to do "FLV" anymore. Flash Player now supports 3GPP time text tracks, iTunes metadata ("ilst" atom), and chap...

McNucle turns Mac into metadata file server
2007-06-01 18:51:00
Organize your data with metadata, also referred to as ‘to metanize’ here at iNuron, has become well known in the market through the principle of tagging. Quite some web 2.0 sites allow their users to tag information. Tagging data with metadata allows data to be efficiently managed and found. That’s like walking to the dressing in the morning and searching for you favourite shirt. Will you remember the exact spot you put it, or use its color, fabric, length, etcetera to determine on sight its exact location? In case of the latter, tagging is a natural thing to do for you. Tip of the Week - Mp3 ID3 Metadata Tags
2007-05-05 16:00:00
One of the most important areas opening up the potential, distribution and broad functionality of digital media across all cretaive areas is Metadata - the extra information that can be embedded and atatched to files of all types to carry all sorts of information. Photos, videos, audio files all carrying their important information with them wherever they go - creator, publisher, date, time, copyright info, type of technology used and pretty mcuh anything else. The functionality that this can deliver for the end user is obvious but even more important is the use to the producer as more and more creative tools take advantage of the cataloging, managing and sorting possibilities availible with digital metadata. As just about anyone working in a post-production facility can attest - the biggest investment required by the digital age is content management tools, not just content creation tools.Heres a short and simple tip about adding ID3 tag information to Mp3 audio files. Windows Vista and Picture Metadata - Watch out!
2007-02-16 13:30:00
By Mike DaviesMicrosoft wants to make it easy to label photos with metadata - information such as where the picture was taken and who's in it - but you better be careful before you use the company's software for doing so.Windows Vista and the Microsoft Photo Info tool can cause problems with metadata or the image itself.According to one Microsoft Knowledge Base article, "When you edit the properties of a photo to add metadata to that photo in Windows Vista, the software for the digital camera may no longer recognize the metadata that is automatically added to the photo by the digital camera."Tagging the raw files through Windows Vista or the Microsoft Photo Info tool after the codec is installed appears to cause these files to become unreadable in other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop," Microsoft has said in a a frequently asked-questions list for the Photo Info software.Microsoft is letting camera manufacturers supply processing software that Vista can employ when users wan...
Blogger <$BlogMetaData$> tag includes noindex meta tag!
2007-02-14 19:43:03
I noticed today that blog.seoptimise.com has been removed from the Google index. The blogs web design was updated earlier in the week and by looking into the source code I found that this was being caused by the Blogger tag which produced the sites meta tags including this line of code:meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW" />Luckily I managed to spot this fairly quickly and hard-coded the generated code instead (without the noindex, nofollow meta tag obviously) so hopefully Google will notice this within the next couple of days. The meta tag is used by most Blogger templates and I'm sure it doesn't normally do this but it's definitely worth looking out for. Hardcoding this also has the advantage that you can replace the RSS auto discovery tags with your own FeedBurner URL instead of the default blogger XML files.--------------------------SEO Services - Promote your business online, submit for a free website analysis today!
