Elisha Porat: "Metamorphosis"
2007-12-19 14:54:00 &-nbsp; To the memory of Arieh LaholaHe did not attempt to saw the barsbut carried his cage around on his back:days, nights, years, ages. And when the gleam of the water beckoned, the small pleasant ripples tempting him,its heavy weight pulled him to the depths. He did not kick and did not railjust sank, succumbing tothe river: resigned, passive, estranged,so far from the Land of Israel. He did not chant and did not speak, language deserted him in the bubblesempty, soft, dizzying. His throat was waterlogged and hechoked, stifled, was transformedand floated, voiceless and without language:A rhythmic hum emanated from him,his swollen legs twitchedand his arms beat like those of a drummer.  -; Transl-ated from the Hebrew by Cindy EisnerRead more work by Israeli poet Elisha Porat in the journal Deep South, from which this poem is reprinted by permission. School Metamorphosis: Adding Art
2007-10-31 23:03:00 This year has been so much more fun now that we have made the effort to add art every week. Having a daytime schedule has helped as well... but I really think the art has given our year the spice that last year lacked. We have been busy bees this year with homeschooling. Some of the art in our school year consists of a monthly art class (and their art teacher's assignments), GeeArt, and our KONOS art ideas. For a long time, I felt like I was skimping on art... and that really broke my heart because art was my favorite subject in school. It very well may be my favorite subject still!I am what you would call an eclectic homeschooler, so I tend to mix and match different styles of homeschooling and curriculums to fit our needs. We are usually studying a loose topical unit-study through KONOS that gives us a basic "theme" to focus on. While we do that topic, I like to throw in many sources (library books, fiction chapter books, movies, field trips, textbooks, geography, timeline charac...

Today's Coffee - Caterpillar's Metamorphosis (NYSE: CAT)
2007-10-19 20:31:00 (Stocks in this article: NYSE: CAT, NYSE: HON, NYSE: DE, Nasdaq: GOOG, NYSE: SLB, NYSE: WB, NYSE: MCD, NYSE: MMM, NYSE: AMD)On the 20-year anniversary of the great crash of 1987, the market is appropriately marking the day with significant declines in the three most widely followed indices. Today's decline is really being driven by bad news from Caterpillar, and a warning that its U.S. weakness is significant enough to impact results. CAT also warned that U.S. weakness might not be containable, and talking heads speculated finally about the impact to exporting Asian nations. Do you see the dominoes falling into place? The scenario we laid out months ago, where U.S. weakness would lead to global market correction is getting setup for future play. We still expect the catalyst to be a geopolitical surprise, perhaps an event regarding Iran. We still put in play the idea that Iran could precede an American bombing with an act of war of its own. It would not be the first time the element ...
The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung) By Franz Kafka
2007-09-25 00:36:00 The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung) is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915, and arguably the most famous of his works along with the longer works The Trial and The Castle. The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin" (see Lost in translation, below). It is widely regarded as a highly symbolic tale with various interpretations. .... (read more from wiki)Click Here To Download Complete Ebook (PDF Format) (Excerpt)One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous vermin. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head up a little, his brown, arched abdomen divided up into rigid bow-like sections. From this height the blanket, just about ready to slide off completely, could hardly stay in place. His numerous legs, pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his circumference, flickered helplessly befor...

No Bugs in this 'Metamorphosis'
2007-09-05 19:10:00 I awoke today to find I'd turned into an enormous insect. Sorry, wrong blog. The Dublin Fringe Theatre Festival is upon us. Janet's featuring ina bold experiment to stage three plays with three directors, but featuring the one cast and crew. The three plays include an early work by Chekhov, 'Platonev'; a black farce with more than a hint of Hitchcock's 'Rope' called, 'Mr Kolpert'; and 'Metamorphosis', an adaptation of Kafka's classic story by Stephen Berkoff. Previews for all three are currently on, and last night (after a better than expected meal in Tante Zoe's), I took myself along to 'Metamorphosis'. The venue, Smock Alley Studio, is also the former church where I was christened. I must confess, nostalgic though this made me, I couldn't say the place had changed much, given that I couldn't remember how it once was to begin with. Certainly the basement, with its crumbling brick walls, suited the play well. The sparse design (stools and subd...
The metamorphosis of contents
2007-08-21 15:31:00 “a book, once written, does not remain constant on all time. It changes with each new book that a Schrifsteller writes. With each book the writer changes everything that he wrote, and determines to certain degrees of everything that he will still write. With each word, which he writes down, it places all remaining to the Diskiussion. In it its hope and his fear lie. “this quotation comes from the writer Harry Mulisch, which was born today before 80 years in Haarlem (the Netherlands). Its most well-known work is probably the novel “the assassination attempt ”.

Pink Metamorphosis
2007-07-22 19:46:00 One great quality of a now-a-days pop singer is their ability to play with their image, dare to change, transform looks. The Queen of POP, Madonna is the leader in this too. Similarly Pink has not left a single hair on her head untouched ever since her debut back in 1999. Let’s see some landmark moments ...

Metamorphosis
2007-06-22 18:38:00 After much consultation with "blog authorities" well beyond my level of comprehension, I have decided that ultimately the "Indigent A-hole" pseudonym must be retired. As my first stab at an unused name it served well for my blogging infacy, but the time has come to move on.I will continue to post here for quite a while, but it may be slow going now that construction has begun at the new site. If you'd care to take a peek check it out- I named it Progressive Dissidence with Murph and Freethinker's inestimable help (and a sobriety-free brainstorming session!)Beware, I am continually screwing with it throughout the day, so you're not likely to see the same thing twice. If you have any ideas from what you've seen drop me a note here and I promise to, at the least, read and consider it.

Myth and Metamorphosis. Picasso?s Classical Prints of the 1930s
2007-03-02 03:08:01 Price–$6 To BUY choose or click any of the following: 1- 2-Moneybookers Email: service@bestnichebooks.com Previous studies of Picasso’s involvement with the classical have tended to concentrate on the period immediately following the First World War, and to attribute that involvement to both the rise of political conservatism in France and the domesticating influence of the artist’s marriage to Olga Koklova. Focusing instead on the later, classicizing prints of the 1930s, this book offers a radically different view of Picasso and the “classical”–a- view that aligns his work much more closely with Surrealist, and specifically Bataillean, revisions of antiquity. The book’s argument is built around detailed analyses of several separate print series: Picasso’s illustrations for Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the etchings of the Vollard Suite, and The Minotauromachy. Common to all of them, the book shows, is a strong engagement not only with t...

Metamorphosis
2006-12-03 03:24:06 There's a sense of change coming, needing only a kick-start from me -- so naturally this week I've done virtually nothing, delaying it as long as I can. Whatever happens likely won't be a bad change, and in fact it's greatly needed, but there's a certain comfort in the status quo that breeds reluctance.A week of doing nothing (pressed for achievements... I made enchiladas. That's about it) kind of explains my silence here -- I'd rather sum up nothingness in one post rather than spreading it out over a week of dull posts. One thing I did do: back when I dumped all my comic books, I did keep some of the higher-quality stuff that was collected into trade paperbacks. Among those few, the fairly well-known "Sandman" series. Over this past week, I re-read all of them -- and was surprised at how well they hold up.When the series first started -- back in, I think, the late '80s -- I was kind of intrigued by it, but it was a bit too intricate and not superheroic enough for my tastes. ...
