Meteorite Strikes, Setting Off a Tsunami: Did It Happen Here?

From NYT > Science: The tsunami washed over Fire Island and, to the west, waves perhaps as high as 20 feet spilled into Lower Manhattan. The furious onrush of water left sediment a foot and a half deep on the Jersey Shore, and debris cascaded far up the Hudson River. No, there's
Meteorite in Canada

Starbury Can't Avoid Meteorite (Get rid of him)!
2008-07-15 15:57:00
I think New York fans aren't going to have to deal with Stephon Marbury next season. Mike D'Antoni doesn't like him, Walsh acts like he wants him to hit the road and I think he shouldn't let the door hit him on the way out! This guy should be bought out. I don't think he's tradeable and this will help the cap space situation. Can he get another gig? I think so, he could go to a place where he's not #1 (kind of like Rasheed, but not for a title). Could he go to Europe, like he said is in his plans? I don't think it's likely, he couldn't handle it. I would like to see him go to Milwaukee or Cleveland. If he plays to his potential, it would be a steal for the Bucks. If the Cavs had him, maybe LeBron could get him to put his money where his mouth is.Wherever he goes, just get him out of New York! If you search, "stephon marbury out of new york," on Google, you get 309,000 results for a reason!

The goose that survived crashing into a meteorite – only to be savaged by
2008-02-06 10:24:00
A goose survived being hit by a 9lb meteorite and crashing into a car only to fall prey to a hungry fox.   And, witness to all this was Brit postman Adrian Mannion who was enjoying his morning cup of tea with wife Fiona when the bizarre set of events unfolded.   According to Mannion, the Canada Goose was left dazed when after banging into a meteorite, it fell headlong into his car’s roof, causing 2,500 pounds worth of damage.   However, there was no reprieve for the bird, for a hungry fox then grabbed it dragged it away before the Mannions could rescue it.   “We heard two almighty thuds and rushed out to see this large, odd-looking rock next to our Mini – and a very poorly-looking mangled goose on the car roof,” The Sun quoted Mr Mannion, as saying.   “A flock of Canada Geese were overhead so the falling stone must have hit the poor creature.”   Mrs Mannion added: “It has to be the unluckiest bird ever. It surv...

How long had it been since he had seen another human being? How long since he had talked to anyone but his own reflection? How long since he?d seen the speck of reflected light in front of him, directly in front of him, and waved his arm ineffectively against the ether to see the speck blink in and out and realized that the star was behind him, and he was casting a shadow on the speck, which was reflecting the star?s light back when he was not interfering by waving his arm.How big was it?How far away was it?Very far and large? Or very small and near?Claudius had not started out alone and scared. He fought those feelings now.He stared at the growing rock in front of him and recognized it for what it was, almost? almost? It shifted and then shifted back, blinking in and out and he went to rub his eyes, actually raised his gloved hand up to his visor to rub his eyes because he could not believe what he saw, and then his glove hit his visor, and he laughed. Meteorite dates lunar volcanoes
2007-12-06 14:04:00
Volcanoes were active on the Moon’s surface soon after it was formed, a new study in the journal Nature suggests. Precision dating of a lunar rock that fell to Earth shows our satellite must have had lava erupting across its vast plains 4.35 billion years ago. This is hundreds of millions of years earlier than had been ...
Meteorite impacts recorded

Aristotle thought that the heavens were perfect and unchanging. He couldn't be farther from the truth. Three posts below I wrote about the interesting geological ( & atmospheric) processes going on in unexpected places of the Solar System, even on very small or extremely cold bodies.Another process that is obviously reshaping the surface of planets and moons is meteorite bombardment. Notable events are rare, but nevertheless, some were observed directly on the Moon and on Jupiter (apart from Earth).A meteoroid hits the Moon, May 2, 2006. Carancas meteorite, Peru
2007-10-02 15:37:00
This meteorite fell on September 15 in a very remote area of Peru, near the community of Carancas, 800 miles from Lima. Claims rose of 200 locals falling ill after visiting the site (they saw the thing on the sky and heard it as well, that's why they were searching for it). Discussion started on many forums about1 can this be a meteorite crater at all?2 if yes, what type of meteorite was it?3 can it really make people ill?Part of a BBC article:"Increasingly we think that people witnessed a fireball, which are not uncommon, went off to investigate and found a lake of sedimentary deposit, which may be full of smelly, methane rich organic matter," said Dr Caroline Smith, a meteorite expert at the London-based Natural History Museum. "This has been mistaken for a crater."However, it's not so easy to tell without actually being there. After some scientists visiting the site and taking samples there are some answers. It is said that the water in the crater was boiling and sending a colum...

What are those things in the sky Vernon WhetstoneTuesday, September 25, 2007One nice thing about writing an astronomy column is the questions I receive, which I am happy to answer. These come mostly from being stopped on the street or phone calls and even one internet e-mail question. Almost all start with the phrase, "What is that bright thing," or "I saw something last night," or a variation thereof. I am happy to answer these questions because they almost always lead to a discussion of astronomy in general and how to get involved in the pursuit of "things out there." So, with thoughts of "killing two birds with one stone" in mind, I am going to address the most often asked questions here. Question one: "What is that bright thing in the southwest in the evening just after sunset?" That one is easy: it's the planet Jupiter, currently in the constellation Ophiuchus (pronounced o-FEE-ooo-cus). It will be there until December when it will cross into Sagittarius where it will spend ...
More on Peruvian meteorite
2007-09-23 03:25:00
The Peruvian mystery crater is the start of new era that can see the end of the world, as we know it between year 2012 and 2030 India Daily Technology Team Sep. 22, 2007 Something strange happened in Peru. A fiery object fell from the sky. Stunned residents said they tracked it to a fresh hole in the earth that was more than 60 feet wide, 15 feet deep, filled with boiling water and steaming with noxious fumes. The local officials confirmed through tests that a ?rocky meteorite? created the crater. But meteorite experts all around the world disagree. Russians are calling it as an American space war experimentation that went out of control. Pu238 is used as a power source for new generation American military satellites, that much is true. And Pu238 can cause water to boil. It also glows. Locals said in the early reports that the crater was glowing. Water was seen boiling in the crater. Pu238 also causes radiation sickness when it combines with dust and is inhaled. M...

Meteorites, the Media, and Mass Hysteria

When I first heard about the recent supposed meteor impact in Peru, and the sickness it allegedly brought to locals, I was just going to let things go by. Something odd happened in a remote area, and it seemed pretty easy to write the mess off as a miscommunication. But this mess seems to be building up quite a head of steam in the media, so I suppose it's worth a further look...

Peru meteorite crash ?causes mystery illness?

Rory Carroll, Latin America correspondentTuesday September 18, 2007Guardian Unlimited The meteorite impact crater high in the Peruvian Andes is said to be emitting noxious fumes. Photograph: EPAA meteorite has struck a remote part of Peru and carved a large crater that is emitting noxious odours and making villagers ill, according to local press reports.A fireball streaked across the Andean sky late on Saturday night and crashed into a field near Carancas, a sparsely populated highland wilderness near Lake Titicaca on the border with Bolivia, witnesses said. The orange streak and loud bang were initially thought to be a plane crashing. When farmers went to investigate, however, they found a crater at least 10m wide and 5m deep, but no sign of wreckage. The soil around the hole appeared to be scorched and there was a "strange odour", a local health department official, Jorge López, told Peru's RPP radio.Later the farmers complained of headaches and vo...

Peruvian Meteorite Sickness
2007-09-19 16:08:00
An unconfirmed meteorite collided with the desolate Andean plain Saturday morning. Hundreds of nearby people are having headaches, nausea, and respiratory problems.Local media and the actual health department are claiming that "toxic" fumes emitted by the meteorite are causing the symptoms. This is, however, very unlikely. The meteorite itself more than likely would not contain any immediately dangerous material, and it is almost impossible for it to release toxic gas from the Earth; most meteorite impacts are very superficial.Geophysicists from Peru's Geophysics Institute will be on the scene are will be making a full report around Thursday.

Two Meteorites in the FlatLand Sky

While standing out in the driveway this evening, I happened to be admiring the stars to the South when two meteorites crossed the sky from East to West, on parallel trajectories, separated by perhaps a half second and both visible simultaneously. It was truly an unique moment of serendipity as I was singing "When you see the Souther Cross for the first time, you'll understand now why you came this way." from Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills and Nash.   What an amazing universe we live in.  Technorati Tags: Southern Cross - Crosby - Stills - Nash - Meteorites - FlatLand - Florida - RilySi - Ride it like you stole it

On Dinosaurs and Meteorites
2007-09-06 16:50:00
U.S. and Czech researchers used computer simulations to calculate that there was a 90% probability that the collision of two asteroids -- one about 105 miles wide and one about 40 miles wide -- was the event that precipitated the Earthly disaster. There you have it. The speculation that dinosaurs may have succumbed to a gigantic meteor shower moves ever closer to absolute fact. This article, Distant space collision meant doom for dinosaurs, fills in a lot of the blanks to the theory including pin-pointing where and when the collision occurred that created the "dinosaur-destroying meteorite, thought to have measured 6 miles across, (that) plunged into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and blasted out the Chicxulub crater measuring about 110 miles wide. In addition "The researchers estimated that there also was about a 70 percent probability that the prominent Tycho crater on the Moon, formed 108 million years ago and measuring about 55 miles across, also was carved out by a...
