All that electrical juice that is shuttled around the house to keep televisions and the like available to just turn on. My wife likes to turn things off at the plug. I am lazy. Designed by civil engineer Michel Virlogeux, it is a large cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the River Tarn near Millau in southern France. Millau Viaduct is located in Millau, France, in the Département of Aveyron. Before the bridge was constructed, traffic had to descend into the Tarn River valley and pass along the route nationale N9 near the town of Millau, causing heavy congestion at the beginning and end of the July and August vacation season. The bridge now traverses the Tarn valley above its lowest point, linking the Causse du Larzac to the Causse Rouge, and is inside the perimeter of the Grands Causses regional natural park. Link

In the U.S., California is taking the lead on installing smart meters. Over in the UK, energy companies and the government are taking a look at the potential installation costs and have found that this won't be a cheap process. While the energy companies have said they expect it to cost £5bn, the Guardian is reporting that government estimates place the number closer to somewhere between £10bn and £20bn. Yikes (I'm not sure exactly how much that is in U.S. dollars, thanks to the billion/trillion issue, but it's a lot). Who will get to pay this cost? Why, the customers, of course.
