When you?re undergoing an outpatient treatment using Suboxone or methadone, it?s important that you find your resources for support wherever you can. One of the most common ways people choose to do that is to take advantage of the many 12-step support groups like Narcotics Anonymous. Free of charge with meetings every day of the week and, in many towns, many times a day, there really isn?t a more convenient or cheaper way to get the help you need.

Personal stories are really important when it comes to drug withdrawal and addiction treatment. Each individual?s circumstance is affected by and affects his or her drug use and recovery. Here?s an interview with someone who started experimenting with heroin in his teens and became an addict in his early 20s. He?s now 40 years old, a heroin-free junky on methadone. Protect Yourself From a Methadone Overdose
2008-02-19 20:57:00
Now, I really mean it this time: this is the last I?m going to say about overdoses for awhile. I thought I?d pretty much gotten it out of my system with the urban myths about overdoses and the tips on how to avoid an overdose and how to know one when you see it. But yesterday, someone I know quite well overdosed unintentionally. They have had a lifetime methadone maintenance slot for years now, and if ever there was a success story to support methadone maintenance, he was it: after a lifetime of being a street junkie addicted to heroin and doing crimes to pay for his habit, he?s managed to hold onto the same job (even move up in the company), married a great gal and had a baby with her. Then yesterday, he had a migraine, happened to run into an associate from the old days who offered him a pill to wipe out the headache. He went home, had a couple of beers and woke up two days later in a hospital.

Real Drug Rehab, Not Methadone, Gives Addicts Their Lives Back
2008-02-10 06:41:00
The makers and advocates of the prescription painkiller and narcotic addiction replacement drug methadone can add yet another damning scientific review to their burgeoning collection of methadone mayhem studies. A study just in from the Oregon Health and Science University shows that sudden cardiac death is a risk even when the drug is used at "appropriate" doses to treat pain or drug addiction. This reinforces the popular view that the opiate addicts and chronic pain patients who take methadone every day should be in a safe medical drug detox or drug rehab program instead of risking their lives with methadone."For years the media has been reporting the growing methadone death-toll, but often incorrectly associates methadone replacement with drug rehab - a misnomer, since methadone for addicts is just the opposite of drug rehab. Addicts remain addicts, and instead of heroin they're hooked on methadone. Most stories report deaths from methadone overdose, but the Oregon study reporte...
Methadone is Deadly Even When Taken as Prescribed
2008-02-05 06:04:00
There?s a new study out by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University that doesn?t paint methadone in a very pretty light. It seems that through their work, they have found that methadone can be deadly even when it is taken as prescribed whether the goal is pain management or drug addiction. Even at therapeutic levels, methadone can be the cause of sudden cardiac death, according to The American Journal of Medicine.

Deadly Mechanism of Methadone
2007-12-29 19:36:00
In 2004, more than 3800 people died from methadone overdose in the United States, according to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Every year since, overdoses due to methadone have continued to increase by about 20 percent. Once the gold standard in drug addiction treatment, methadone has quickly become one of the most commonly abused prescription opiates on the black market and by legal prescription for chronic pain.
Methadone Abuse Worse Than Abuse of Other Prescription Opiates
2007-12-25 09:32:00
It used to be that methadone was considered the drug of choice when it came to treating opiate addiction. However, with its increasing prevalence as a treatment for chronic pain, methadone has joined the ranks of other commonly abused opioid-based drugs like heroin, Vicodin, OxyContin and others. More than any other prescription painkiller, the rate of overdose by methadone has skyrocketed over the past five years. The rate of increase is about 390 percent according to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). In 13 percent of overdose fatalities that were reported in the United States, methadone was a contributing or sole cause. Only cocaine kills more people than methadone. Methadone is far less expensive than other opiate pain relievers like OxyContin, so more and more doctors are prescribing it for that reason. Those who are addicted to opiate pain relievers also resort to methadone pills when they run out of their regular, more expensive prescriptions. The Drug En...

One of the latest to fall is Dr. Warren Stack of Utah who was charged with 18 criminal counts that include illegal distribution of a controlled substance, conspiracy, health care fraud and money laundering. Up to 80 people a day received prescription opiate medications from Dr. Stack and five of them died because of it.
Methadone Overdose Deaths on the Rise
2007-12-23 21:43:00
Methadone prescriptions are on the rise and so too is the commonality of methadone overdose and death, according to the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC). There are two reasons that methadone is prescribed: pain management and opiate drug addiction maintenance. It was rarely used for either purpose until the early ?80s when it was more commonly prescribed as a drug addiction treatment and OxyContin, its chemical cousin, was the prescription of choice for pain management. This quickly changed: the latest report from the NDIC says that methadone prescriptions have increased 715 percent in five years.

2007-12-19 21:04:00

Her son, Daniel, died a few days early, also a victim of prescription opiate medication overdose, methadone and other anti-depression drugs.

Buprenorphine for Relapse Prevention
2007-11-08 20:31:00
Yes, buprenorphine is a great way to recover from drug addiction and detox of prescription painkillers or other opioid-based drugs without dealing with withdrawal symptoms. But in the world of treatment, relapse prevention is a huge part of healing and maintaining a drug free life. Subutex and Suboxone are great for that, too.
Methadone Versus Buprenorphine
2007-11-05 22:56:00
Substitution treatment for drug addiction is based on replacing the drug of choice with a one that mimics its actions in the body and the brain. You trick the body into thinking that a less harmful drug is the drug of choice so that you don?t go into withdrawal. Meanwhile, you are, in essence, trading down your addiction to a drug that doesn?t tear up your body as badly or carry the risks that other methods of drug ingestion might. The two that do the job: methadone and buprenorphine in the form of Subutex and Suboxone.

2007-06-05 14:00:00
Doctors, who prescribe methadone for pain, are usually not as well educated in drug abuse, as those who work in addiction, and consequently their patients are not well informed. With the increased use of methadone, especially with uneducated users, comes the increase of related accidental deaths - frequently the leading cause of overdose in some states.

The refrigerator, which was inside Anna Nicole's bedroom in the Bahamas, contained methadone (5 mg per 5 ml). Methadone was the same drug found in Daniels body during his autopsy.Law enforcement sources in the Bahamas tell TMZ that at least one witness has come forward and said Howard K. Stern supplied Daniel with methadone just before he died, and flushed the remaining stash down the toilet. That witness is expected to testify next month at the coroner's inquest into Daniel's death.
