Email Delivery: Getting The Most Out Of Metrics
2011-12-29 17:25:00
Engagement and delivery metrics are the foundation of most business decisions for any email sender, so organizing your DynECT Email Delivery account in a method so you’ll be able to get the most out of these metrics is important. This post will explain the various ways to segregate and group data to make sure it is easy to utilize when maintaining your business strategy, email lists, campaigns or any other actions. Use of Sub-Accounts DynECT Email Delivery clients have the ability to create sub-accounts.  Other than rolling up to a master account, sub-accounts are treated as separate users within DynECT and allow for a unique method of segregating data, metrics and users. One common desire is to separate mail from various organizational departments — such as marketing and operations — as there are often separate users that need different log in credentials, as well as the need to separate and organize data in different ways.  This all can be done easily with se...

India, Indian Developers Dominate BuzzCity’s Mobile Gaming Metrics!
2010-12-21 13:40:00
BuzzCity has just released the November numbers for DJuzz, its ad supported free mobile games portal. And in keeping with the global trend of increased mobile gaming it reported a 17% increase in the number of games downloaded in November – making it a total of 7.6 million games for the month. It came as no surprise that the increase in these numbers is primarily due regions where mobiles are cheap and the main source of internet access. The site which offers neary 7000 games in 29 categories developed by 100 mobile game developers caters to platforms like Java, Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile and some are even mobile based. Region wise, India continues to dominate with nearly 4 million game downloads(52%). 3 of the top 10 downloads were developed by Indian based or owned developers- RockeTalk, IgFun (owned by Indiagames) and Mobimasta. While Indiagames and Nazara made their way into the top 10 developers too. While the ‘Action and Adventure’ category dominated,...

Mobile Web Traffic Grows 4 Times In 2 Years : AdMob Metrics Report
2010-06-30 16:40:00
Amidst the usual comparisons of operating systems and the constant analysis of the biggies in the handset segment (Nokia, Apple etc), a few other things in the AdMob Mobile Metric report caught my attention. This graph basically shows a regional share of the traffic and requests that the company receives. Firstly the notable fact stated in the report is that globally the traffic has increased by 4 times in just 2 years. And this multiplication factor seems to have reduced only because of Africa because otherwise the rest of the world has increased its mobile activity for the company by 6 times. Also notice that Oceania has seen the steepest growth in the time span. Why is that? Is it due to a new marketing strategy that was being pursued in the region or does this growth represent a new surge or true growth in mobile spending and engagement in the region? The other noticeable fact is revealed in this bar graph published in the report. The difference in the choice of the phone...

Metrics for public research institution contributions
2010-05-01 18:04:00
Metrics for public research institution contributions to the economic health of their communities is a central topic among reserch institutions and state governments. The Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) has designed a draft proposal for metrics to describe and assess the ability for a given research institution to make an impact on the community and economy. Institutions define  their goals and communities differently, so while all institutions would answer the same questions, the answers may not be directly comparable. However, an expectation for these measures should be to allow institutions identifying their own goals within a reporting of these metrics to provide community members better information and context through them, and whatever ancillary information an institution would provide.Download a copy of the AUTM’s Proposal for the Institutional Economic Engagement Index.
DLP and Voodoo Metrics
2009-04-13 02:00:00
About two weeks, I had the opportunity to deliver a keynote at the CSO Executive Seminar Series on DLP.  After my “15 minutes of fame”, I had the opportunity to sit in on one of the DLP talks from one of the other vendors.  The speaker shared a Ginormiacous (free drinks from me at RSA Conference for the first person to correctly identify this cultural reference) quantity of data that drove home the point that a lot of sensitive data is getting lost and that this is costing organizations lots of money.

Metrics That Matter: Bounce Rate
2008-05-11 23:50:00
This is the first post of a series called “Metrics That Matter” in which we’ll delve into the many facets of your website analytics data, and answer the questions of what’s really going on under the hood of your marketing campaigns. Today’s metric: Bounce Rate. What does it mean? Google defines bounce rate as “the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page.” What does it tell me about my site? In general, bounce rate gives you insight into the “stickyness” of your website content, and separates users into two distinct groups — those who arrive at your site and immediately leave, and those we decide to stay. What kinds of questions does it answer? Is my home page scaring people away? Am I attracting qualified traffic to my site? Do any of my marketing campaigns have a poor ROI? Two more points about why Bounce Rate is important. One is that page load tim...
The Debate on Security Metrics
2008-05-09 09:58:00
Recently I was sitting on a panel which was pretty heterogeneous: There was a representative from IBM (actually from former ISS), customers, a representative from the Open Source community (who actually, during his presentation always said how bad our security is) ? well, and me. In order to have some fun, the moderator wanted to bring some fire in the discussion and said: We often hear people saying that Open Source is more secure than your software model, what do you have to say on this? Well, there were so many different themes on the table which were ? in my opinion ? more interesting to discuss than a debate on Open Source vs. Microsoft, I actually did not want to go down that road. So, I asked the moderator back: Could you please elaborate a little bit what you mean by "more secure". To cut this story short, we actually had a very good discussion on how security can be achieved, what is necessary and a little bit on metrics. Why am I raising this? Well I read a blog post this ...

That is great stuff to show the IT Director, CIO, CSO, mom and to put on the wall. But a company I know (not the one I work for) still managed to get a virus which brought about some painful downtime. Startup Marketing: Metrics and Analytics
2008-04-27 20:58:00
Webyantra is pointing out a sad case of an Indian web2.0 startup who struggled to market his startup online despite spending 30,000 bucks on Google adwords and Rediff. This highlights the importance of analytics and trying to track a Return on Investment on every marketing campaign especially when you are a startup. The needs of a startup while marketing are quite different as compared to bigger brands and so this presentation about startup marketing at the recently held web2.0 expo becomes important. This presentation talks about how the general business model of a web2.0 startup is usually to get users through marketing then retain them and strive to increase their usage and then convert Users/ Usage into revenue. This simple business model is hard to execute but this presentation actually smartly develops a 5 step model Acquistion, Activation, Retention, Refferal and Revenue and highlights key metrics that should be monitored for Startup marketing. In case you are looking for W...
Alexa Rankings System changes and Vietnamese Publishers Rethink Web Metrics
2008-04-19 11:00:00
Web metrics provider Alexa just announced the New Alexa Rankings with new algorithms that pushed most of Vietnamese websites' ranking down overnight. In fact it is a good news for marketers in Vietnam since Vietnamese online publishers used to set Alexa ranking as a norm of traffic measurement and monetization. Last year a news portal in Vietnam even posted a headline saying VnExpress in Global Top 100 Websites and near the line of CNN.com and BBC Newsline. Ironically it said Alexa was the only independent and objective ranking system of web metrics worldwide. Actually many international marketers and advertisers had left Alexa for other web metrics/analytics service such as comScore, Hitwise, Compete and Nielsen//NetRatings. Among the fierce competition, comScore had became the leader with reports can send Google' shares down significantly.Since online advertising is emerging as an important piece of media and branding communication strategy of marketers in Vietnam, the need for...

WordPress Plugin: Blog Metrics 1.0
2008-04-14 20:37:00
I have talked about the Blog Metrics plugin before (Previous Post), but that was long before its now version 1.0 release, and I wanted to highlight it again as I see it as a must-have plugin for multi-author blogs as well as single author blogs that are looking for some new stats on their own work. A very cool plugin by Joost de Valk. I finally found the time (while I should be doing other things) to upgrade my Blog Metrics plugin and release it for all of you to enjoy. It now shows the standard deviation on most metrics and comes with a widget! It also now includes a widget to display your stats publicly which I think is interesting, but not something I’d do. A great way to keep track of how many posts are being made, how many comments on average are being generated, and how many words each author has contributed. Read it at the source ShareThis

Search metrics such as CTR and conversion rate are meaningless unless they
2008-02-12 15:16:00
We spend a lot of time analysing and tuning the performance of search marketing campaigns.  With SEO, we look at the number of rankings, the traffic, the keyword growth, weighted strength, and of course - conversion rate.  On the PPC site we are constantly reviewing the CTR of ads, the conversion rate of both keywords and ads, and the overall CPA (cost per action / acquisition) amongst others.  I'm sure that many of you have your eye on similar sorts of metrics that help you understand and improve your search marketing campaigns. Its easy to get caught up in analysis and measurement and miss the point of the marketing campaign in the first place - to generate more business.   And so what is the point of spending money on marketing if the leads are coming in and you are doing nothing with them? We're currently looking for a new PR agency.  Naturally I used the search engines to locate a few local companies that I thought would meet our needs. ...
