Mets believe they are a playoff team, just don't play like one
2008-06-11 14:16:00 Few grand plans have gotten off to a worse start than the New York Mets' new one did Tuesday night. They haven't played like a playoff team, but the Mets still believe they are one. And Tuesday, before facing the Diamondbacks, the Mets players emerged from a brief players-only, closed-door meeting, each carrying a piece of paper with a blueprint for a future that includes the postseason. No part of it included blowing a four-run lead and falling, 9-5, at Shea. Reliever Joe Smith surrendered a a go-ahead solo homer to Chris Snyder in the eighth and Duaner Sanchez coughed up three more runs in the ninth to complete the Mets' undoing. One player allowed the Daily News a quick glance at the sheet, which looked a lot like a flow chart with a series of arrows. At the top was the team's record entering Tuesday night's game, 30-32. Near the bottom was a circled final regular-season record of 92-70. Below that was an arrow pointing to a single word: "Playoffs." The sheet also had severa...

Long overdue, Church is finally headed to DL for Mets
2008-06-10 15:21:00 In a long overdue move, right fielder Ryan ChurchRyan Church is headed to the DL today because of lingering effects from his most recent concussion. The DL stint is retroactive to last Friday and comes after Church was re-examined by a neurologist in New York Monday. Church had been given the weekend off after complaining of pressure in his head. The New York Mets said Church did not show any of the major symptoms of post-concussion syndrome in yesterday's exam, but the club decided to put him on the DL anyway. The Mets also said Church would not be allowed to play again until he is entirely symptom-free. Monday's move caps a convoluted and confusing situation that began after Church suffered the concussion - his second in three months - in a May 20 collision with the knee of Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar. Church should have gone on the DL then, but he talked the Mets into letting him pinch-hit just days after the concussion and convinced them to let him return to the lineup...

Mets' record unacceptable to Minaya, Randolph
2008-06-10 15:03:00 Omar Minaya, the general manager of the New York Mets, described his underachieving team in an exasperating way. He called it a .500 club, meaning the Mets win as many games as they lose. Actually, at 30-32, the Mets are not even a .500 team. Two months into the season, Minaya did not expect the $138 million Mets to be so skittish. They were 5-2 on their last homestand to silence some of the speculation about Manager Willie Randolph's job status, but they followed those encouraging signs with a 2-5 trip. Two steps forward, two steps back. "Well, .500 is not acceptable," Minaya said. "For me, it's not acceptable because we're better than that. It's not so much about the investment. It's about what this team is about and what this team, talent-wise, is. As far as time frame, as far as when we should be better, I'd like to say we should be better right now," Minaya said. "But we're not."But, as talented as the Mets might be, they are still seven and a half games behind the ...

Mets screw up
2008-06-10 06:08:00 BY ADAM RONIS It's bad enough the Mets are playing poorly on the field. They can't even do things off the field correctly either. The Mets finally placed Ryan Church on the 15-day DL -- about three weeks too late -- because of post-concussion symptoms. The move was made retroactive to June 5. He is eligible to return June 20. Chruch suffered a concussion in the spring and then took a knee by Yunel Escobar to the head trying to break up a double play three weeks ago. The Mets should have been cautious and immediately placed him on the DL. Instead, they sent him on long flights, used him as a pinch hitter and brough him back for some games. He was off to a great start and this could hamper his season. Another awful job by the Mets. Moises Alou will be activated for Tuesday's game. Fernando Tatis and Endy Chavez will fill in for Church.

Mets Misplayed Church
2008-06-10 03:02:00 The Mets have finally placed Ryan Church on the DL with post concussion syndrome. To start the season many said "where would this team be without Church" and after the Padres series we might be seeing where this club is at. But the Mets look bad in all of this, after his second concussion in a few months they look like they were willing to trade wins for a players well being. It should be an automatic trip to the DL after the first concussion. It was quite obvious that Church wasn't 100% in the last game he played in and it shouldn't have taken this long for the team to finally make a move. I don't blame Church in fact I like his gritty attitude, it's the club who should step in and act responsibly because in the long run that's whats best for the team. Don't expect to see any new faces to replace him, they'll probably stick with the same bench and add Alou....Church suffered his second concussion in 11 weeks in a collision with Atlanta’s Yunel Escobar on May 20. That he’...

Mets sign an outfielder
2008-06-08 17:40:00 Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports (bottom in El Duque section) that the Mets have signed OF John Rodriguez. The 30 y/o left handed outfielder was a career minor leaguer until he finally made the majors with the Cardinals in 2005, in approx. 350 ABs over two seasons (2005-2006) Rodriguez hit .298. Can't say that I remember him but he did enough to make the Cardinals WS roster in 2006. He was back in the minors for 2007 and this year after being released by St. Louis he was pick-up by the Rays. After not making the team out of spring training he was released on June second. The Mets have assigned him to New Orleans, he is known for his bat and his defense isn't the best but is considered a RF so he must have an arm. Either the Mets are bringing someone up and need him for depth or despite the numbers they don't have faith in who they have and Rodriguez will be on the fast track.........Here's the report on him entering spring training with the Rays.....John Rodriguez: Signed to...

Sickel's - Mets got a sleeper
2008-06-06 18:19:00 Minor league guru John Sickel's at Minor League Ball says that the Mets may have gotten a sleeper in the draft. While most are looking at Davis and Havens ( for good reason), Sickel's likes the Mets fifth round pick of Lefthanded hitting catcher Dock Doyle. If the kid is a decent catcher maybe Havens will be left at 2B, since he didn't sound to keen about the idea of catching......Mets fifth round pick Dock Doyle, a catcher from Coastal Carolina, looks like a sleeper to me and was one of my favorite Shadow Draft candidates.
