Calories in Mexican Food
2008-05-06 04:01:00
Maybe you're going out for Mexican food tonight in honor of Cinco de Mayo, or maybe you've just come home from a Cinco de Mayo celebration and you're wondering how many calories you've just consumed. Some Mexican dishes have more calories than you could possibly imagine while others are relatively low calorie. Often, it's the cheese and sour cream that does the most dietary damage. Fast food or "Fresh Mex" Mexican is often the worst offender, while authentic Mexican restaurants that make traditional Mexican food with less cheese are often lower in calories and saturated fat. In 2003, the Center for Science in the Public Interest sent several dishes from Chipotle Mexican Grill to an independent lab for testing since the company wouldn't publish fat or calorie info themselves. They found that some of the burritos, such as the Vegetarian Burrito at 1,300 calories, had more fat and calories than a Quarter Pounder with fries and a Coke. They also looked at Baja Fresh: Its c...

The Drive Back from Tacoma = More Mexican Food
2007-09-21 09:49:00
I had previously mentioned that during our trip to Tacoma, WA, all of our meals turned out to be of the Mexican variety. We stopped off at Taco Bell (3 times in 2 days), Chipotle, and our final destination, the Taqueria Los 3 Hermanos located inside the food court at Bellis Fair Mall, in Bellingham. We got to the mall at 6:10pm and it was still open, however all the shops were in the process of closing. As we made our way up to the counter, one of the amigos working apologized and said they were closed. We explained to him that we had come all the way from Vancouver (a white lie) to experience his delicious tacos! With some whimpering and throwing out the puppy dog eyes the dude gave in and agreed to make us 12 tacos! Hurrah! These tacos are more towards the authentic style, not the "Taco Bell" stuff as some of you have put it. The taste was very simple, but also very fresh and light. Man, I love cilantro. The best part of this meal was wolfing it down in 2 minutes because the custodi...
Ancient Americans liked it hot -- Smithsonian study traces Mexican cuisine
2007-07-29 21:12:00
Ancient Americans liked it hot -- Smithsonian study traces Mexican cuisine roots to 1,500 years agoOne of the world?s tastiest and most popular cuisines, Mexican food also may be one of the oldest. Plant remains from two caves in southern Mexico analyzed by a Smithsonian ethnobotanist, archaeologist and a colleague indicate that as early as 1,500 years ago, Pre-Columbian inhabitants of the region enjoyed a spicy fare similar to Mexican cuisine today. The two caves yielded 10 different cultivars (cultivated varieties) of chili peppers. The study will be published the week of July 9 in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.?This analysis demonstrates that chilies in Mexican food have been numerous and complex for a long period of time,? said lead author Linda Perry, of the Smithsonian?s National Museum of Natural History. ?It reveals a great antiquity for the Mexican cuisine that we?re familiar with today.?Perry and Kent V. Flannery, of the Universit...
Mexican Food in Korea: Dos Tacos in Gangnam
2007-07-16 14:25:00
What did you do on Saturday? Did you eat Mexican food by any chance? Well, regardless of what your answers are to these questions, on Saturday we experienced some of the finest Mexican cuisine in Seoul. We met up with a friend in Gangnam (Kangnam) for lunch at Dos Tacos. What you are going to read might shock you (or not), so be prepared.Anyways, the last time we tried Mexican food in Korea it wasn't very good. Taco Amigo in Itaewon was much better, but still it did not rock my socks off. So this time around one of our friends has lived in Gangnam for the past few years led us to a spot that was tucked away, called Dos Tacos. We went there for lunch and had a nice seat on the patio. There was actually blue sky in Seoul! Yahoo! Let's take a look at lunch, shall we?Dos Tacos is not a large restaurant--there are two patio tables outside and seating for 25-30 people inside. They also do take out:You have to try the lemonade here--it was sparkling and very refreshing. Also, all drinks ...

Ole Mexican Foods Potentially Tainted Cheese Recall
2007-05-01 14:19:00
Dr. John Fruin(850) 245-5520FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Tallahassee, FL -- Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson is urging consumers to check their refrigerators for Ole Mexican Foods' Verole Queso Fresco Authentic Mexican Crumbling Cheese and Ole Fresco Authentic Mexican Crumbling Cheese. The two products may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The potential for this contamination was determined after random testing performed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed the presence of E.coli bacteria in samples of both of the cheeses. "The discovery of this problem demonstrates the importance of an integrated pro-active food safety program, where products from stores and food processors are not only inspected but tested in our labs, as well," Bronson said. Department inspectors are working with Florida grocery chains to remove any of the potentially tainted cheese from those stores and are checking warehouses in Flori...

Mexican Food The last time that I was in San Dieg...

Mexican FoodThe last time that I was in San Diego I found a small mom & pop place to eat Mexican food that was incredible. But I wanted to give it a second visit before I revealed my newly discovered secret, and thus tonight, after I arrived in San Diego, I had dinner there. It is a very small space inside Midway Plaza, right on Midway and about a block from Pacers. A small kitchen where a husband and wife cook, while the daughter tends the food and the drinks, and in between customers helps her little sister with her homework. And the food is spectacular! And obviously San Diegans are discovering this little spot, as while I was there, a constant flood of people filed through the place. Why? For one thing, they make three or four different kinds of mole, including a poblano mole that takes 30 ingredients to make! On the menu tonight were two kinds of soup: Menudo (I pass) and a spicy Mexican Steak Soup with vegetables that was divine. The previous time that I was here, they had Albond...
