Mexican League Final
2007-09-05 01:35:00 Mexican League Final The Yucatan Leones and the Monterrey Sultanes forced the Mexican League final to a 7th game and this is how it played out. Before a packed house in Monterrey, Walter Silva pitched 5 strong innings while Karim Garcia scored all of Monterrey’s 2 runs to lead the Sultanes 2-1 over the Yucatan Leones in the Mexican League Final. Karim Garcia was named LMB Final MVP and was gracious in accepting the award. (Loosely translated): “I am moved to accept this honour but simply put I was only but a grain of sand to obtain the title, it was the effort of all my teammates, the pitching and the coaching staff.” Garcia remarked that his first season in the LMB was very good to him and that he “finished off the season in the best way - to win a championship.” Karim was also battling personal issues as his son was hospitalized in Boston at the time of the final. He managed to hit 5 HR in the playoffs. Former Major Leaguer and Clevelan...

Mexican League Mayhem
2007-08-18 04:45:00 Mexican League Mayhem Playoff update and an announcement from the Q. Roo Tigres under the cut. With Jose Lima on the mound in game 5 of the North division final, the Saltillo Saraperos were hoping to inch closer, however it was not to be. Lima gave up a 2 run bomb to former Yankee Karim Garcia and Monterrey continued to chip away at Lima, winning the game 6-2. Monterrey is now the North division champs, winning the series 4 games to 1 and will go on to the LMB series final to face the south division winner, either Yucatan or Mexico City. It should be a good one and we’ll keep you posted. In other Mexican League news, the Quintana Roo Tigres addressed the media concerning the team was on the move yet again. The Tigres brass reaffirmed their commitment to Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo with the government supporting the team’s stay in the city. Although the team sustained a loss this year, they made some headway and made it to the playoffs in their first year o...

Mexican League - Live Game Notes
2007-07-16 16:44:00 Mexican League - Live Game Notes On July 3rd, 2007 I attended a game between the Quintana Roo Tigres and the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz in Cancun, Mexico. The following are game notes and general observations of the game. Note: it might be useful to read my Mexican League primer article, which can be found here. It covers the history of Mexican baseball and focuses on the Quintana Roo Tigres in particular. To begin, tickets for the game are very reasonable. The best seats in the park (Estadio Beto Avila) are $7, preferential seating is $5 and bleacher seats are $1.50. The stadium holds approximately 9,000 fans and at this particular game I would estimate that there were about 1,500 - 2,000 fans at the game which was disappointing, however they were more than enthusiastic in supporting their Tigres. Apart from the standard fare of hot dogs and pizza offered at baseball games in Canada and the U.S., in Mexico you can get tacos, Chicharrones, fresh potato chips cooked o...

2007-06-28 00:37:00 Guess Who Just Pitched a Gem in the Mexican League? Kudos to you if you picked up that the owner of that pretty mug is none other than former Japanese MLB “star” Mac Suzuki. It has been 5 years since he threw his last pitch in the Major Leagues in 2002. So how is he doing? Last night he tossed an absolute gem, getting the complete game win while giving up 6 hits and striking out 5 while only giving up 1ER. This puts his season ERA at a miniscule 2.45. Not bad for a washed up bum!

Happy Cinco de Mayo
2007-05-06 06:55:00 Happy Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo (”The Fifth of May” in Spanish) is primarily a regional, and not a federal, holiday in Mexico; the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Why then is Billy Beane making a mockery of this special day by using Jack Cust in the DH role instead of his Mexican darling dear Erubiel Durazo? It was only 3 years ago that Durazo finished 23rd in MVP voting. Although Cust has slammed 199 minor league home runs, he has only played 70 major league games (despite battling nagging injuries). For a team like Oakland with playoff aspirations, I feel that Beane should go with the proven veteran who is spicing up the Mexican League with an OPS of 1.136. ¡Viva Mexico!

What?s Poppin? in the Mexican League?
2007-04-09 01:36:00 What’s Poppin’ in the Mexican League? Mexican League Goings On
2007-03-29 04:44:00 Mexican League Goings On Last night Jose Lima pitched a tidy 7 innings for his first win of the season. Saltillo defeated Monclova 4-0, while Lima had 6 K’s, 1BB 3H and 0ER, lowering his ERA to 1.50 on the season. If he keeps this up it won’t be long before he is back in the ...
