Konami on broken MGS4 street date: 'Things happen'
2008-06-08 04:09:00 The release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ahead of June 12 has prompted Konami to speak out about the game's broken street date. "Unfortunately, these things happen. As much as we like see that no one breaks streets dates, no one can monitor every single moment that a title gets packed up for shipment and when its on its way to the stores," Konami's Dani wrote. "The store could be at fault as well, for letting someone get a copy before the street date." That appears to be the case with Wal-Mart, as the mega-retailer has sold MGS4's 80GB PS3 bundle early on at least two separate occasions, here and here. Pete Stone, Konami's U.K. General Manager, pledged Thursday that the game wouldn't sneak into the hands of gamers early. 2008-06-05 22:45:00 Amid complaints that Konami forced early reviewers not to disclose install times and cut scene lengths, Metal Gear Solid 4 assistant producer Ryan Payton tells why.According to Payton, review limitations of the reported non-disclosure agreement included install times, length of cut scenes (particularly the ending), number of environments, opening movie, product placement, and a half dozen story elements."The game requires an eight minute install, as well as a number of two to three-minute installs between acts," Payton told Kotaku in an email on Thursday. "First, there seems to be some speculation as to how limited this limited edition MGS4/PS3 bundle is. I can't divulge exact stock numbers, but I can verify that quantities are in the four digits, which means less than 10k (its actually a bit less than that, even). Once that's gone, its gone. Japanese PS3 buyers will be able to choose from three "Welcome Box" MGS4 bundles in Satin Silver, Ceramic White, and Clear Black, and in addition to Snake's latest adventure and a Dual Shock 3, they'll find a SIXAXIS inside. In a recent interview the Japanese producer said that MGS4 will push the limits of the PS3 and also the Blu-ray, saying "there simply isn't enough space". Not enough space? We're talking about 50 freakin' gigabytes and he says there's no space? There are people out there still using smaller hard-drives on their PCs, but Kojima already wants something bigger. I'd say, it's probably one of the only "must have" games that everyone is waiting for the the PS3, and according to GameDaily, Konami is banking a lot on its release."While exclusive first-party games on the PS3 like Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future will certainly give Sony's platform a boost, exclusive third-party efforts are becoming a rare breed. In a Reuters piece, which dubs the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 the "last of the great exclusives," Konami's assistant producer on the game, Ryan Payton, said that because of the high production costs, the PS3 "killer app" would have to sell at least one million copies on its first day. According to Next-Gen.biz Konami says that "Metal Gear man Hideo Kojima will “always†be involved with the Metal Gear franchise, despite the game designer’s statements to the contrary." Kojima said many times Metal Gear Solid 4 is his last MGS game. Apparently, Konami has a different opinion. Some marketing guy told Next-Gen.biz in a recent phone interview that they'll never let the MGS franchise go, nor the Snake. We madprofessors understand that of course.
