Konami on broken MGS4 street date: 'Things happen'
2008-06-08 04:09:00 The release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ahead of June 12 has prompted Konami to speak out about the game's broken street date. "Unfortunately, these things happen. As much as we like see that no one breaks streets dates, no one can monitor every single moment that a title gets packed up for shipment and when its on its way to the stores," Konami's Dani wrote. "The store could be at fault as well, for letting someone get a copy before the street date." That appears to be the case with Wal-Mart, as the mega-retailer has sold MGS4's 80GB PS3 bundle early on at least two separate occasions, here and here. "First, there seems to be some speculation as to how limited this limited edition MGS4/PS3 bundle is. I can't divulge exact stock numbers, but I can verify that quantities are in the four digits, which means less than 10k (its actually a bit less than that, even). Once that's gone, its gone. In a recent interview the Japanese producer said that MGS4 will push the limits of the PS3 and also the Blu-ray, saying "there simply isn't enough space". Not enough space? We're talking about 50 freakin' gigabytes and he says there's no space? There are people out there still using smaller hard-drives on their PCs, but Kojima already wants something bigger. Kojima previously announced that copies of MGS4 will only feature one voice-over language, rather than packing more on one disk like previous versions, due to storage limitations. I'd say, it's probably one of the only "must have" games that everyone is waiting for the the PS3, and according to GameDaily, Konami is banking a lot on its release."While exclusive first-party games on the PS3 like Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future will certainly give Sony's platform a boost, exclusive third-party efforts are becoming a rare breed. In a Reuters piece, which dubs the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 the "last of the great exclusives," Konami's assistant producer on the game, Ryan Payton, said that because of the high production costs, the PS3 "killer app" would have to sell at least one million copies on its first day. It's not known how much Metal Gear Solid 4 will ultimately cost Konami, but development on the new consoles typically requires a budget of around $10 million or more and according to IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon, some games cost as much as $50 million. 2007-07-11 05:12:00 In a meeting between Reuters and Konami, that I caught over at gamespot, i'm REALLY suprised that more people aren't jumping all over this considering the rate Sony is loosing exclusives and having games infinitely delayed and canceled.... In the interview the following caught my eye as a HORRIBLE sign for sony... "Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game," Kitaue said. "But we might have to take some steps."
