Of Mice and Straw Men
2008-05-28 20:53:00 by Jayne Lyn Stahl Now that we've figured out, six years into it, that the war in Iraq wasn't about fighting Al Qaeda, but straw men, it's time to turn our attention to the Senate who singlehandedly showed that the times they are indeed a changing this week by adding protections for veterans, and the jobless, onto the the Iraq war funding bill. Notably, the bill passed the Senate by a wide, and bipartisan, margin. And, despite the stalwart efforts of the mainstream media to ignore it, there is a strong likelihood that the next President may be facing a majority of Democrats in both the House and the Senate which could make it immensely difficult to slip an activist conservative Supreme Court justice through the cracks, should the White House next be occupied by McCain. This could get interesting, especially in light of Mr. Bush's new role as fundraiser-in-chief, and lobbyist, for McCain. Reportedly, the president will be working to raise cash for the Arizona senator next w...

Clark Kent is a disguise Superman wears that reflects his take on the foreign society in which he must hide. That's the way it became for Gin, except kinda the other way around. Ginny became "Jersey Gin" all the time and only assumed the disguise of "Uptown Gin" when she had to hide. One might think it sorta confusing and even a little metaphysical, but believe me that's the way it was, so there you go. Anywho, the point is Ginny's reborn spirit continued to flourish in New Jersey's rich soil, even with all the heavy metals. As is common in life, it was ofte...

Green tea inhibits breast cancer in mice
2008-04-09 09:25:00 SAN DIEGO, April 8 (UPI) -- A green tea anti-oxidant that helps stop cell damage and aging may inhibit breast cancer, U.S. researchers suggest. University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers find the green tea anti-oxidant epigallocatechin-3- gallate, known as EGCG, significantly inhibits breast tumor growth in female mice. Senior researcher, Dr. Jian-Wei Gu suggests EGCG reduces breast cancer by targeting both tumor blood vessel formation through the lowering of vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor cell nutrients that promote growth and proliferation, or angiogenesis. "In this study we have demonstrated that the frequent ingestion of EGCG significantly inhibits breast tumor growth, vascular endothelial growth factor expression and tumor angiogenesis in mice," Gu says in a statement. Seven-week old female mice injected with breast cancer cells and given EGCG in their drinking water showed significant decreases in tumor cross section area, tumor weight and va...

"Rotten Egg" gas puts mice in suspended animation
2008-03-24 08:00:00 Hydrogen sulphide gas can induce “suspended animation” in mice and may one day help preserve organ function during intensive surgery, say researchers. The sewer gas, with its distinctive rotten-egg smell, put the mice into a hibernation-like state – reducing their heart rate, breathing and body temperature – while keeping their blood pressure normal, the researchers found. In extreme circumstances, such as during complex cardiac surgery on humans, putting the body “on-hold” may reduce organ damage to patients (see Suspended animation: putting life on hold). Currently doctors use sedatives or extreme cold to induce hypothermia in patients, which slows-down breathing and heart-rate, but these also lower blood pressure – an occasionally catastrophic side effect. In a study, published in 2005, researchers discovered that a cocktail of gases including hydrogen sulphide halved the oxygen demands of mice and slowed their metabolic rate (see Can human life be put on hold?)....read the whole th...

Microsoft Announces Laser Desktop 7000 & Digital Media Keyboard 3000

Microsoft?s newly announced Laser Desktop 7000 and Digital Media Keyboard 3000 could undoubtedly serve to underpin quite why but, irrespective of this, these new devices are hardly unattractive ? perhaps if only to the same degree that they?re not especially mind blowing.

Funny jokes-The three mice
2008-02-20 18:35:00 Three mice are sitting in a bar in a pretty rough neighborhood late at night trying to impress each other about how tough they are.The first mouse pounds a shot of scotch, slams the glass onto the bar, turns to the second mouse and says, "Whenever I see a mousetrap, I lie on my back and set it off with my foot. When the bar comes down, I catch it in my teeth, then press it twenty times to work up an appetite, and then make off with the cheese."The second mouse orders up two shots of sour mash, pounds them both, slams each glass onto the bar, turns to the first mouse and replies, "Yeah, well when I see rat poison, I collect as much as I can, take it home, grind it up into a powder, and add it to my coffee each morning so I can get a good buzz going for the rest of the day."The first mouse and the second mouse then turn to the third mouse. The third mouse lets out a long sigh and says to the first two, "I don't have time for this bullshit. I gotta go home and fcuk the cat."

The Cat and the Mice
2008-02-12 10:55:00 A certain house was much infested by mice. The owner brought home a cat, a famous mouser, who soon made such havoc among the little folk that those who were left stayed closely in the upper shelves. Then the cat grew hungry and thin, and, driven by her wit's end, hung by her hind legs to a peg in the wall and pretended to be dead in order that the mice would no longer be afraid to come near her. An old mouse came to the edge of the shelf, and, seeing through the trick, cried out, "Ah ha, Mrs. Pussy! We should not come near you, even if your skin were stuffed with straw." Moral: Old birds are not to be caught with chaff.

The Mice and the Weasels
2008-02-12 10:49:00 There was war between the mice and the weasels, in which the mice always got the worst of it, numbers of them being killed and eaten by the weasels. So they called a council of war, in which an old mouse got up and said, "It's no wonder we are always beaten, for we have no generals to plan our battles and direct our movements in the field." Acting on his advice, they chose the biggest mice to be their leaders, and these, in order to be distinguished from the rank and file, provided themselves with helmets bearing large plumes of straw. They then led out the mice to battle, confident of victory; but they were defeated as usual, and were soon scampering as fast as they could to their holes. All made their way to safety without difficulty except the leaders, who were so hampered by the badges of their rank that they could not get into their holes, and fell easy victims to their pursuers. Moral: Greatness carries its own penalties.

Mice that catch common cold may provide an effective cure
2008-02-04 11:52:00 Genetically engineered mice, which can catch a cold, are scientists’ new implement to find an effective cure for the scourge of the nasal passages. Professor Sebastian Johnston, a virologist at Imperial College London, has achieved a success in infecting mice with the virus that results in the common cold. His work attains significance as this is the first time that a non-primate has caught a cold. To date, Professor Johnston points out, only humans and chimpanzees were known to be susceptible to rhinoviruses, the main group of common cold viruses. This is one of the reasons why research into possible cures has been so slow, he adds. The ability to infect laboratory mice with rhinoviruses means that scientists can now investigate how the virus infects an animal other than a human being. Professor Johnston believes that this may speed up the rate at which new drugs are developed. "Until now, it has not been possible to study rh...

Genetic alteration behind prostate cancer in mice and man confirmed
2008-01-29 11:15:00 Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, have confirmed that a molecular change found in human prostate cancers is responsible for initiating the growth of prostate cancer in mice and in human cell lines. The study was led by Valeri Vasioukhin, Ph.D., and Peter Nelson, M.D., both investigators in the Human Biology Division at the Hutchinson Center. A large number of human prostate cancers carry a chromosomal rearrangement causing over expression of the ETS transcription factor ERG, a protein that controls gene expression. However, the functional significance of this phenomenon has been poorly understood, till date. The researchers, while studying prostate cells in transgenic mice, found that up-regulation of ERG transcript initiates cancer growth. They also noticed a similar effect in human prostate cells. It was assumed that the up-regulation of ERG in human prostate cancer triggers cell-invasion programs, leading to the displ...

Scientists find elusive pancreatic stem cells in adult mice
2008-01-25 12:57:00 A study on adult mice has revealed that the pancreas harbours stem cells with the capacity to generate new insulin-producing beta cells. The newfound progenitor cells will provide a potential target for therapeutic regeneration of beta cells in diabetes, provided that the results replicate in human studies also. “One of the most interesting characteristics of these (adult) progenitor cells is that they are almost indistinguishable from embryonic progenitors,” said Harry Heimberg of the JDRF Center at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium and the Beta Cell Biology Consortium. “In terms of their structure and gene expression, there are no major differences. They look and behave just like embryonic beta cell progenitors," the researcher added. Insulin is required for cells to take up blood sugar, the body’s primary energy source. In people with certain types of diabetes, pancreatic beta cells lose the ability to produce suffic...

Stem-cell transplantation prompts muscle growth in mice with muscular dystr
2008-01-21 10:43:00 Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have successfully used embryonic stem cells from mice to prompt the growth of healthy muscle cells in the rodents afflicted with a human model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is the first time that transplanted embryonic stem cells have been shown to restore function to defective muscles in an animal model of muscular dystrophy. The researchers have revealed that their novel procedure involves stringent sorting to preserve all stem cells destined to become muscle. Upon experimentation, the researchers found that their technique avoided the risk of tumour formation while improving the overall muscle strength and coordination of the mice. Just like humans suffering from the fatal wasting disease, the mice used in the study also lacked a protein called dystrophin. “We envision eventually developing a stem-cell therapy for humans with muscular dystrophy, if we are able to ...
