Andy Pettitte (Yankees), Michael Barrett (Padres) and Mark Loretta (Astros)
2007-12-08 04:24:00
Andy Pettitte formally returned to the New York Yankees on Friday night when he accepted the team’s offer of salary arbitration. Catcher Michael Barrett returned to the San Diego Padres when he accepted his club’s offer and infielder Mark Loretta went back to the Houston Astros. They were the only players to accept among the ...
Blaming Barrett
2007-08-07 06:20:00
We've already informed you that identifying Lou Piniella's hysterics as the impetus for the Cubs' turnaround is stupid. Also stupid: crediting the loss of Michael Barrett, and the subsequent addition of his inferior replacements, instead. But Jacob Luft of CNNSI has gone and done it anyway. The Cubs are no strangers to curses, having dealt with the wrath of an exiled billygoat for the past six decades. But now it looks like they have found another ballclub to share in the misery, if not take the burden off their shoulders altogether. The transfer of the curse -- if you believe in such silly notions -- took place on June 20, when Chicago traded catcher Michael Barrett, who had spent the better part of the past two seasons auditioning for the All-Ruffian team, to the San Diego Padres for backup catcher Rob Bowen and outfield prospect Kyler Burke.I'll just go right ahead and say it: I don't believe in such silly notions. These were the records of both teams after games played on June...
Saying Goodbye To Michael Barrett

There are many different ways in which Cubs fans are dealing with the loss of their catcher. This is one of them.

Michael Barrett Traded To Padres
2007-06-21 00:12:00
I’m not a Cubs fan, but Michael Barrett was traded from the Cubs to the Padres today. I think it’s a pretty interesting deal, so we’ll see what happens. Barrett was expected in San Diego on Wednesday night when the Padres play host to the Orioles. Bowen, who was hitting .268 with eight doubles, two homers ...
Michael Barrett

The Cubs have cut ties with catcher Michael Barrett by dealing him for a bucket of balls to the San Diego Padres.  This moves makes clear that the Cubs have more faith in Carlos Zambrano's health and desire to resign with the Cubs this off-season than most pundits would concede. From a fantasy perspective, there aren't too many winners.  Barrett's production should be expected to drop (ed: further?) in the move the the hostile hitter environment of Petco Park.  The previous starting catcher of the Padres, Josh Bard, will see his ABs dramatically cut.   The Cubs will elevate someone to the starting catcher's role.  Koyie Hill and Rob Bowen, the bucket in the bucket-and-balls part of the trade, have not demonstrated any major league ability at all.  Makes you wonder why the Cubs didn't select Georgia Tech catcher Matt Weiters a couple weeks ago, doesn't it? ;
Michael Barrett Traded To Padres
2007-06-20 15:44:00
According to Buster Olney, Michael Barrett has just been traded to the Padres.  In return, the Cubs received backup catcher Rob Bowen, a young outfielder named Kyler Burke, and cash considerations. Burke, 19, was drafted 35th overall out of high school last year based on his huge power potential and athleticism.  He hasn't shown anything against pro pitching yet.  Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus says Burke has an "enormous ceiling" with a strong right field arm.  This is an upside play by Jim Hendry - Burke could be a star or a complete bust. Bowen will provide the Cubs a mostly defensive-minded backstop, although that's what they have already.  He was once seen as a future starter as a Twins minor leaguer, but his bat never panned out.  Bowen has teamed up with Henry Blanco before, when both were Twins.  Bowen was a waiver claim for his last two teams, so that gives you an idea of his value.  On the plus side, he's speedy ...
Layeth the Smacketh Down... The Cubs Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett
2007-06-02 22:38:00
The Cubs spent $300 million dollars in the acquisition of talent in the off-season and right now, it's looking like a train wreck. In light of Sweet Lou Piniella blowing up and Alfonso Soriano forgetting how to swat homers, it's become a powder keg in Cubbie-world.Friday, 'Big Z', Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett tussled in the Cubs dugout, and Big Z decided to channel "The Rock", Dwayne Johnson. He whooped up on Barrett and sent him to the hospital with six stitches to his lip, along with swelts and bruises. The two men put the incident behind them and were fined. When Lou Piniella left Tampa Bay, he thought his fortunes would be better; however, he's finding out in Chicago, there's a reason why the Cubs are the Cubs...Thanks to the magic of the Internet and Yotube, you can see the action as it is...
Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett Fight in the Dugout, well, slapfest vid
2007-06-02 07:58:00
Here’s the video of the non-fight and partial fist of Carlos Zambrano hitting his catcher Michael Barrett.  Next time Michael, you probably want to focus on the pissed off man in front of you instead of trying to point out something.  And Carlos, my man, when punching, you are supposed to close your fist.  Only ...

MICHAEL BARRETT LOHO INTERVIEW: WHEN KEEPIN IT REAL GOES RIGHT
2007-04-04 21:26:00
Michael Barrett's rep Matt Kramer over at Barrett's website has agreed to let us LOHO bloggers compile our questions for Michael to answer.  This diary is for those said questions that you've wanted to ask Michael but were afraid because you're one of the "little people."  Well, have no fear!!!  I will compile the list of questions and send them to Matt on Friday morning.  He said that we should have answers within the next couple of weeks.  The only thing I think that Julie (or any of us) would ask is that the questions not delve into private issues or any other obviously "off limits" topics (I'm sure this sounds odd coming from me) - the only exception being the question of the "nutty buddy."  And with that, take it away: UZI
