2011-06-13 07:03:00 The storied college football rivalry between the University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan gets a special new twist this fall. Michigan: Teachers Trying to Hide Union Activism in School Email Accounts
2011-03-26 13:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Michigan's union thugs have found a new way to hide their on-the-job union activism from the prying eyes of public transparency -- or at least they think they have. Activist school teachers are using their state-sponsored email accounts to discuss their strike ideas, their union work slow down ideas and other illegal activities but are claiming that these emails are "personal" and therefore should not be open to Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) requests by the state's budget hawks, government transparency advocates, and the news media. Michigan's Mackinac Center for Public Policy recently reported that the Michigan Education Association has sent out messages to its members that they should exclude any emails sent from school-owned...
Michigan State Spartans, NCAA Tournament: In or Out?
2011-03-11 02:33:00 In our latest, most up-to-date NCAA Tournament bracket projection, (or college basketball "bracketology" if you will, we have the Michigan State Spartans as a #11 seed. Although the chances of them falling into that final #12 seed line (and perhaps playing within that "First Four") are still high, even with their 66-61 narrow escape over the Iowa Hawkeyes in the first round of Big Ten Tournament. It was game the Hawkeyes lost more than the Spartans won. However, their chances of falling off the bubble and into the NIT are quite low at this point. A win tomorrow over the #2 seed Purdue Boilermakers assures their place as the sixth Big Ten team in the NCAA Tournament....

Northwestern loses critical game to Michigan
2011-02-10 05:56:00 The game was never going to be easy. You don't just walk into opposing gyms and walk away victorious without putting in a lot of effort. Ken Pomeroy had Michigan by three points and a 63% chance of victory for the Wolverines. For the entire first half it appeared that Northwestern forgot that it had to try. The Wildcats scored 19 points in the first 20 minutes and looked lost. Thus by the time the second half rolled around it was too little too late.Jordan Morgan scored 27 points and the Wolverines continually exposed a soft interior defense on the way to scoring 75 points and shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 40 percent (6-15) from beyond the arc....

Notre Dame Season In Review - Michigan State
2011-01-25 07:37:00 Notre Dame 31, Michigan State 34 (OT) The last time Notre Dame strolled into East Lansing and had an easy going of things was...well...let's say 1992. Even in the best, most deluded portions of the Weis years, winning against Michigan State was pretty damn hard. They play the Irish too early for their occasional late-season collapse to take effect, and ND is one of only two rivalries the Spartans seem to care about. To contrast, MSU is one of 28 rivalries or so ND has to remind themselves to care about. It's exhausting. With the offense acting irregular to the point of requiring an infusion of Citrucel, and the defense showing hints of being baffled by players running with the football, this registered as a "Uhhh...let's trying to be in this game in the 4th quarter, and uh, see where it goes from there," type of contest.
Notre Dame Season In Review - Michigan
2011-01-19 10:24:00 Notre Dame 24, Michigan 28 Back in the salad days (even like 4 years ago this was a nationally relevant game! WTF!), the early season tilt between Michigan and Notre Dame determined which team would spend the year in the National Championship discussion, and which team would spend the rest of the season complaining about not beating the other. Now, it determines what team might try to stick in a bowl game, and which one will be kicking the bucket before November. With the "Notre Dame can play down to anyone, at anytime, and anywhere" principle in place, even a super God-awful Wolverine defense couldn't prevent this game from reeking of a toss-up.
Illini Slap Michigan State Around in Must Win Game

Michigan State Spartans have now found the Correct Starting Five
2011-01-13 20:08:00 Following Michigan State's narrow escape over Oakland on December 11th, I tweeted to my followers what I believed MSU's starting lineup should be: a three guard cadre of Durrell Summers, Kalin Lucas, Keith Appling with Delvon Roe and Draymond Green up front. I then tweeted an abbreviated/condensed version of why I felt this would work. First, having two true point guards (and the requisite ball-handing skills) on the floor at the same time would help ameliorate State's biggest issue this year- turnovers. Secondly, Lucas is just not himself after the Achilles and who knows if/when he ever will be. He's better served as a scorer off the ball now than as primary distributor. Perfect for Appling, who's defense is...
Is Brady Hoke the Right Choice for Michigan?

R.I.P. Borders on Michigan Ave.
2011-01-12 00:15:00 This weekend, Chicago lost one of my favorite places in the world.Borders on Michigan Avenue closed. One of my earliest memories of Chicago was in 1997 visiting from Michigan and going to Borders and wanting to buy the White Town album, "Women in Technology" (featuring one of my favorite songs, "Your Woman") and my mom not letting me because of the content (she probably made the right call). At DePaul when it was nice out, around 9 pm I'd go for a run down State Street and Michigan ending at Borders to look around. When my girlfriend visited from Michigan we'd always stop in there and the go to Ghiradelli's next door for some $11 ice cream.I epically met Bill Clinton there,...
Michigan's coaching fiasco rings familiar
2011-01-09 04:37:00 My initial reaction to the firing of Rich Rodriguez was not one of overwhelming joy. Now, a lot of that was because I felt that RichRod was more or less botching the coaching and recruiting for the Michigan defense, turning a program once reliably robust into a team reliant on outscoring their opponent week-in, week-out. As a Notre Dame fan, hearing that the coach of Michigan is crying at team banquets and blasting Josh Groban at top volume is a good thing....but I knew that crazy ride had to end The real reason to be somewhat sobered, is remembering that just a year ago, this was Notre Dame. If anything, the Irish have had the market cornered on angrily axing would-be saviors of the program after a few years of mediocrity. In these years of tumult, Notre Dame has learned an unwanted lesson that Michigan could be about to learn; that firing a head coach has to be carried out just as carefully as hiring one, because it might have an equal effect on the product on the field
Looks like Kyle Rudolph has outrun his last Michigan DB
2011-01-05 09:23:00 In disappointing but certainly not unimaginable news, it appears that junior TE Kyle Rudolph will declare for the NFL draft, and might even hire that assclown Drew Rosenhaus as an agent just to make it all official-like.
Northwestern Gives #18 Michigan State a Scare, but Falls by 2
2011-01-04 07:03:00 Although the final outcome was still a loss, it was a much more exciting and interesting loss to Michigan State this time for Northwestern, who took one of their toughest Big Ten opponents down to the final possession. No wants to believe in nor accept moral victories, but losing to the #18 Spartans, when your star forward John Shurna (the Big Ten's leading scorer) is clearly not anywhere near himself, is not the worst thing in the world....
Michigan State's Leading Scorer Summers needs to Step up Even More
2010-12-11 19:27:00 It maybe single digit high temperatures and subzero wind chills in East Lansing, Michigan right now, but the Michigan State Spartans should look to make it Durrell "Summers summer, summertime Time to sit back and unwind" if they are to start living up to their preseason hype. Apologies for quoting Will Smith. Really, that was my bad I know. The Spartans were preseason #2, but they have three losses already on this young season. None of their losses have been particularly bad: they took #6 UConn down to the wire, they hung with #1 Duke at Cameron Indoor for about 35 minutes (and could probably win that game today now that it would be played without Kyrie Irving who...
Ohio State Brutalizes Michigan in Football Portion of Border War Weekend
2010-11-27 23:51:00 Assuming that it was planned and not just coincidence, "Michigan-Ohio Sports Rivalry Weekend" is a very clever and exceedingly marketable idea. I'm referring of course to the Detroit Red Wings defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets on the eve of THE GAME (In which the Michigan Wolverines were crushed by the Ohio State Buckeyes) in college football. The only similar set up coming to mind is the annual November clash Florida St. and Florida used to have, where the college basketball teams play each other on Friday night and college football on Saturday. Of course, given the varying schedules of the leagues involved, it would be hard to pull this off every year. The Wings took the NHL portion of the...
Red Wings Take Hockey Portion of Michigan-Ohio Rivalry Weekend
2010-11-27 18:46:00 Assuming that it was planned and not just coincidence, "Michigan-Ohio Sports Rivalry Weekend" is a very clever and exceedingly marketable idea. I'm referring of course to the Detroit Red Wings visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets on the eve of THE GAME (Michigan Wolverines vs. Ohio State Buckeyes) at "The Horsehoe" of college football. The only similar set u coming to mind is the annual November clash Florida St. and Florida used to have, where the college basketball teams play each other on Friday night and college football on Saturday. Of course, given the varying schedules of the leagues involved, it would be hard to pull this off every year. The Wings took the NHL portion of the doubleheader, a critical...
Michigan-#9 Ohio State: Brutally Honest Preview of THE GAME
2010-11-26 17:22:00 This week is rivalry week in college football. That means you get a lot of awesome games with cool names like "The Iron Bowl" (Alabama-Auburn) and "The Holy War" (BYU-Utah). But only one of these rivalry games can claim an actual war in the history of the geographic region it covers. That's the Michigan Wolverines vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes, or "THE GAME," as it's called. There's a reason ESPN Classic ran a marathon of past tOSU-UM games on Thanksgiving. (Well, maybe two rivalries can claim actual battles: also Kansas-Mizzou, as they had the abolitionist vs. slave state skirmishes known as "Bleeding Kansas," in the 1850s.) Anyways, this game doesn't have the #1 vs. #2 hype that it had...
The #2 Michigan State, Tom Izzo Podcast
2010-11-10 18:00:00 At Big Ten Media Day here in Chicago I talked to the leader of the #2 Michigan State Spartans Tom Izzo for 40 minutes, literally. And amazingly, we really didn't get that much into basketball at all. It was more about the media, the changing nature of it, and how social media affects big time college basketball.I also talked with the Big Ten preseason player of the year Kalin Lucas....

Michigan 67, Illinois 65: One for the Ages
2010-11-06 22:22:00 When the Illini and the Wolverines got together to play college basketball in February, the score was Illinois 51, Michigan 44. When they met to play college football Saturday, the score was UM 67, UI 65. It reminded me of the 2009 Illini basketball 38-33 loss to home state. Because you looked at the box score, and you're like "is that a misprint?" If this Big Ten conference game had any similar precedent, it's the 2000 meeting between the #12 Wolverines and #21 Northwestern Wildcats. NU won that one 54-52 at Ryan Field. I guess my prediction was a bit off!...
He is, the Most Interesting Punter in the World: Michigan Man Mesko
2010-11-06 13:40:00 Yesterday, I saw a lot of search engine love for former Michigan Wolverines and current New England Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko, an athlete with a fascinating back-story. For some reason, a lot of people were searching for Zoltan Mesko t-shirts lately. I guess the cult status he had in Ann Arbor is spreading to the NFL, or Boston at least. So I figured it was time to re-publish this exclusive from 2009 Big Ten Media Day. When I first saw that Michigan brought their punter to Media Day, I thought "well, that makes sense he had a ton of work last season, and probably will again this fall. But seriously, who brings their punter?" Then again Michigan State brought their kicker,...

Michigan State Coach Returns to Sideline, with new Comedic Skills
2010-10-24 16:00:00 Sometimes it's not the best player who's the star of the team, but the Head Coach. The 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox were like that with Manager Ozzie Guillen. And in college football, the face of the program is quite often the coach, so the association is quite natural. When you think of Michigan State Spartans football you probably think of Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio, his gutsy play-calling versus Notre Dame, and the mild attack heart he suffered. Sure ILB Greg Jones is MSU's most talented player, QB Kirk Cousins it's most well known, but the media attention on Dantonio undoubtedly makes him their star. Dantonio took some time off after his heart attack, coached...
Northwestern Loses Thriller to Michigan State, but Attendance Improving
2010-10-24 00:29:00 As important as it is for Northwestern to win games this college football season, it's maybe even more important they sell tickets this season. Attendance at Ryan Field has been a big issue in recent years, and the University's athletic department sought to remedy that with the new "Northwestern: Chicago's Big Ten Team" ad campaign in August. Although they're still not selling out, the campaign is working. Through the first three home games, Ryan Field attendance was up 51.1% over the first three in 2009. And today's heartbreaking 35-27 loss to #7 and undefeated Michigan State drew 41,000+, the largest crowd of the year. What's more impressive, is that they've drawn better despite the weather often working against them....
QB Kirk Cousins leads Michigan State to 1st in Big 10
2010-10-23 22:44:00 Sometimes when you write something, it becomes MORE relevant later than at the time you published it. This exclusive with Michigan State quarterback Michigan State, an interview I conducted and later published in August, is actually more on point today than when it first went live back in the summer. I have to admit it, I'm drinking the green colored Kool-Aid being manufactured in East Lansing, Michigan this summer. I truly believe that Ohio State and Iowa are the class of the conference; but after that, Michigan State leads the way. I think they're the most complete team of the nine which happen to be a peg or two below the big two, and if anyone's going to contend...

Why I hate the Michigan State Spartans
2010-10-21 02:38:00 Michael Moore is just one reason to hate MSU Four years under Fitz, three losses to the Michigan State Spartans. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore! The only NU victory in the Fitz era came in 2007 when CJ Bacher turned in the greatest performance I've ever seen from a quarterback. Even that win took overtime as the NU kicker (no, not Demos) missed the potential game-winner in regulation. The other three games have been painful losses to say the least. But it's not just the devastating defeats. No, there's much more to why I hate the Michigan State Spartans and you can find out more after the jump. ... |
