2007-10-18 22:31:00 Despite my misgivings about the marketing efforts behind Kanye West's Graduation, not to mention my instinctive distrust of any album with so much crossover appeal, I eventually relented and picked up a copy of the CD a couple of weeks ago. While I don't think it turned out to be as groundbreaking as some of the mainstream music reviews made it out to be, I must confess that I found myself enjoying it far more than I would have expected. There are a couple of songs on Graduation that have begun to grate on my ears, and at this point I've heard enough of T-Pain "singing" over Michael Jackson samples to last me a lifetime. Having accepted it for what it is, though - an album intended for as broad an audience as possible - there's not a whole lot that I can find fault with it. With that said, though, I certainly understand why some members of the hip hop community (I see you, Flood) have not embraced the album. Perhaps Mick Boogie's new mixtape, The Graduate, featuring remixes...

2007-09-23 22:01:00 The first time I heard Young Chris rapping as a member of the Young Gunz duo, on their single Can't Stop Won't Stop, I was underwhelmed. The song managed to achieve a moderate level of success on MTV, but the beat sounded like one of the free tracks that you get with your trial version of fruityloops. As for Chris' lyrics - "Mami feelin my begets so my whole neck glow, Say I'm young but I can sex though" - they left me wondering just what exactly Jay-Z, who had been promoting Chris and partner Neef as the heirs to the Roc-A-Fella throne, saw in this kid. Over the past couple of years, however, Young Chris has been putting in some solid work on the mixtape circuit. A couple of appearances on Mick Boogies previous tapes, in particular, had me rethinking my opinion of the Young Gunna.
