I was going to fly under the radar and play the flirt and let everyone underestimate me," Parvati said after she was revealed to be the winner. "[But Jonathan Penner] outed me and said, 'This girl's a threat! We've got to get rid of her!' I was like, 'Okay. I've got to start playing.' I got my head in the game and started making moves."Parvati defeated former Survivor: China castaway A...

Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Favorites) Episode 5 recap
2008-03-07 19:45:00
What makes a Survivor contestant strong? Is it the ability to bench-press 250 pounds? Maybe it's someone who can run the 40-yard dash in less than five seconds, or someone who can hold their breath underwater for two minutes or swim for miles without tiring. It might not even be someone with physical strength, but loads of mental toughness, Hatch-ing their way through the game with not just the ability to lie, but the ability to make others feel unthreatened by them while they silently cut their throats.Strength, and who has it versus who doesn't, was the topic of conversation following last night's episode of Survivor: Micronesia. Some claimed that the "bag of bones" Chet was far and away the weakest player in the game - a valid argument, as he's not particularly strong or agile, and doesn't appear to be playing the Outwit portion of the game all that much (at least, not directly). That said, I feel the weakest player in the game was the one that got the boot last night - hulki...

Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Favorites) Episode 4 recap
2008-02-29 06:06:00
The fourth episode of Survivor: Micronesia showed us, if nothing else, who the true players are. Whether it be challenges, idols or councils, the strong shined and the weak withered.Upon their return from last week's council, it was no surprise that Penner was pissed and Cirie was snippy. Penner, having lost his bid for greater numbers at Tribal Council, delivered a bitch session for all to see, including Cirie, who is now beyond arrogant. She "doesn't have to hear him," she says; "yes you do" says he - it's really childish on both their parts, but it is kind of interesting. But it doesn't hold a candle to the show James puts on. We learn that Eliza is now ailing, "sick" or something like that. This does not sit well with the gravedigger, who now regrets having voted off the stronger (and smarter) Yau-Man, wishing instead he had voted off ol' Crazy Eyes. The topper? He has no problem saying all this right in front of her. The exchange goes something like this:James (to P...

Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Favorites) Episode 2 recap
2008-02-15 07:39:00
The second episode of Survivor: Micronesia was like a run-of-the-mill suspense film that's plodding along, keeping your interest but not doing all that much else, until - BAM! - a sick twist of an ending that you never saw coming that makes the whole thing that much better. We started off innocently enough, with the focus on the Favorites, having just voted off Johnny Fairplay, returning from Tribal Council in a not-exactly sad mood. Ozzy's catching fish with his bare hands, and later, he's making out with Amanda around the shelter while James is snuggling with Parvati. The canoodling doesn't go unnoticed though, as both Cirie and Penner are awake and aware of the goings on, and aghast at the stupidity of the four. Somewhat interesting, but nothing we haven't seen before.Meanwhile, over at camp Fans, the group of elder Survivors was being ostracized yet again. Krazy Kathy, Tracy and Chet, all outcasts in one way or another and feeling unwelcome, decided that they'd set up their...

Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Favorites) Episode 1 recap
2008-02-08 16:31:00
Well, it's back, and you know when I say that that I'm not referring Survivor, but to something much more important: the Survivor recaps. Here lie my thoughts, brought to you in easy-to-read (and easy-to-write) bulleted list form, because we all live random thoughts much more than cohesive paragraphs.* Let's get this out of the way pronto: what a load of crap. I would have laid out many a clam that Mr. John Fairplay didn't even have a girlfriend, much less a 7-month pregnant one. When the guy shows up wearing a "Will Lie 4 Food" hat, I'm fully prepared to hear him, you know, lie about stuff. Instead, we got a guy who appeared to be high on any number of drugs, flip-flopping his emotions faster than the tide moves. What a lame showing, and as a result, where I previously was glad to see him, now I'm just glad to see him gone.* I would like a list of greater than five names of people who had ever consider Eliza as one of their "favorites." You're joking, right? Whiny, hyper, an...

Maybe the same kind of thing will happen to you come November 19, 2007 because on that day mail addressed to the Marshall Islands as well as to the states of Micronesia will no longer be considered as international mail but as domestic, meaning much lower prices! Reporting from Chuuk, Micronesia
2007-11-01 13:04:00
I just spent one week in Chuuk, a beautiful and tranquil island in Micronesia. I helped a group of teachers to learn powerpoint, digital storytelling, and E-portfolio. It’s such a fun group! Nothing bothers them. And they bond like a group of fish in the ocean.Chuuk, comparing to the modern and over-developed Shanghai, is like the village I grew up in the 70s. No high rises, no big markets, no TV or radio signals, and power gets cut off daily. However, Chuuknese are happy and free, from debt, mortgage, traffic, stress, and all other worries we have in the “modern” life. Many people just sit on the street and watch the day goes by.Here is a picture of our good-bye dinner. I am holding a dark fish, which Michael (the tall and dark guy on my left) caught in the deep ocean and BBQ-ed. At least that is what he claimed. They asked me to post this picture on our blog and title it—SDSU students in the 70s (China’s 70s).

Beautify CNMI Micronesia Challenge Summer Camp: Day 1
2007-06-27 03:55:00
The goals of the Beautify CNMI Micronesia Summer Camp are to introduce kids to conservation issues, the Micronesia Challenge, and environmental careers. We had a very successful Day 1.Kathy Yuknavage, Natural Resource Planner at CRM and MINA Secretary, helped us kick off the week long camp by making a presentation on the terrestrial portion of the Micronesia Challenge. She talked to the students about the 20%, how much land the CNMI already has in protected areas, and how much of that land is in forested areas. She also made a presentation on the Walk It, Don?t Drive It Campaign. The students learned about the different reasons not to D.R.I.VE. on the beach: Driving on the beach Drips oil, creates Ruts, Impacts the sand, and kills Vegetation. After the presentations by Kathy we did an energizer/ice breaker. We played boffer tag.Our first activity was an experiment to determine how many germs are on our hands when we eat. We took a slice of bread and had someone handle it who hadn?t was...

What an amazing first day!I feel like a baby next to the conservation heavy weights attending this Micronesians in Island Conservation Retreat. There are so many brilliant, vibrant, inspiring conservation leaders here...I only hope that I can "hang."This morning (all of the member states except for the host), CNMI, Guam, Palau, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae presented challenges, successes, and goals concerning Biodiversity and Conservation in their nation.I reintroduced the MIC members to Beautify CNMI and talked about our programs in the Laulau Watershed and at Obyan Beach.Later in the day we talked about the individual MIC member Personal, Professional, and Institutional goals. Micronesia Challenge in the New York Times
2007-04-19 02:48:00
I think you should read this:New York Times, April 17, 2007No-Fishing Zones in Tropics Yield Fast Payoffs for ReefsBy CHRISTOPHER PALAPublished: April 17, 2007NGIWAL, Palau ? Sitting on a bench in a thatched hut in this village on Palau?s main island of Babeldaob, Islias Yano, 57, looked over the bay he has fished professionally since he was 15 and recalled the fishing practices of his boyhood.?We fished certain fish in certain seasons,? he recalled. ?Each reef could only be fished by people from a certain village.? Village elders would rotate fishing on reefs, he recounted, to husband their slow-growing main source of food.Starting in the 1980s, population growth, new seafood markets in Asia and modern ways of thinking washed away the elders? authority and rules.?Outsiders started coming into our reefs, they used scuba gear and dynamite, and the fish got smaller and fewer,? Mr. Yano said, shaking his head.In the world?s tropical seas, full-grown snappers and groupers became as rare...
