Medical Device Hack ? DIY Cellphone Digital Microscope!
2009-11-10 02:52:00
Here’s an awesome hack involving a cellphone and a microscope! An engineer has made a DIY cellphone digital microscope that can actually be pretty darn useful. I think this hits the sweet spot that perhaps, many of our smartphones can be recycled as devices such as these.  Kudos! Now an engineer, using software that ...
Four More Under the Microscope
2009-08-21 20:04:00
The New York Giants are the kind of team you want to play in the preseason.  They have the best defensive line and one of the best offensive lines in the sport.  If you've been going easy on tackling this summer, Brandon Jacobs will change that in a hurry.  They'll test your corners with short routes to speedy receivers and they don't make an awful lot of mistakes.  You wanna gauge your progress?  Play the New York Giants.  Last week I put Caleb Hanie, Nathan Vasher and Chris Williams under the microscope.  Hanie was terrific.  Vasher was atrocious.  Williams finished the game healthy - a bonus in my opinion.  This week the focus shifts...slightly.  Four to watch:Orlando Pace / Chris...
Jay Cutler debut put under microscope
2009-08-16 07:29:00
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler only played one quarter on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. He only threw 10 passes, completing five. He only had some of the expected starters playing alongside him, with no Greg Olsen and Matt Forte. But, fair or not, his every move was analyzed in this meaningless NFL exhibition game....
Three Players Under a Microscope
2009-08-14 03:43:00
David Haugh presents the five players he believes need to play well on Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills.  They are Adrian Peterson, Craig Steltz, Marcus Harrison, Rashied Davis and Frank Omiyale.  Peterson is a coach's favorite and a stellar special teams performer.  Steltz and Harrison will be on this roster but need to prove they're ready to contribute on a regular basis.  We know Rash can get open but can he catch the ball, especially thrown with Cutler's velocity?  Omiyale may not earn the starting job but he'll become the first man off the bench - essential with an aging left tackle. Here are three more players I believe need a solid performance Saturday night.  It's not a make or...

Mobile camera microscope add-on.
2008-06-06 16:27:00
A team of researchers at UC Berkeley are developing technology that will allow anyone anywhere in the world to diagnose malaria without any other equipment than a mobile phone with a camera and the microscope add-on. The idea behind the CellScope is to facilitate malaria detection and treatment without the need for a doctor on site to make the diagnosis. All you have to do is put a glass with a blood sample in front of the microscope, turn on the LED lights and look for the tell-tale blue dots that reveal wether the patient has contracted malaria. If need be, the mobile image can be sent to experts anywhere in the world for analysis.

I wasn't able to boot Damn Small Linux 4.4 RC1 on the machine I really need it to run on — the $15 Laptop (aka Compaq Armada 7770dmt) — so I booted it on my VIA C3 Samuel test box, the machine that ran my two Puppy Linux torture tests. I've already written about how the inclusion of Firefox 2 (renamed Bon Echo) in DSL 4.3 has breathed new life into the live-CD distribution as far as I'm concerned.

Cell Phone Microscope
2008-03-20 04:59:00
We've seen cell phone telescopes in the past, but those certainly can't be used for medical purposes. This 60x cell phone microscope was designed by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley which provides an affordable and reliable method to diagnose patients in remote areas over the phone. Dubbed the CellScope, you get 5x magnification for diagnosing skin conditions and 60x which is powerful enough to magnify and diagnose malaria in a blood sample. Heck, you can also use it to count white blood cells in leukemia patients. The initial prototype was constructed from off-the-shelf components with a total cost of $75 thereabouts. Imagine snapping images using the CellScope and sending it via MMS to a medical lab a few hundred miles away. Hopefully a refined version can roll out soon. Under the Microscope: MedStore.biz
2008-02-11 19:26:00
I’ve discussed affiliate marketing countless times on this blog. However one niche I haven’t mentioned yet is prescriptions and supplements. A lot of times people immediately think of “PPC” (in this case, pills porn and casino) as soon as they hear prescriptions. The truth is though, prescription affiliate sales can be a great source of income. Most affiliate programs in the niche give you credit for all sales over the lifetime of any customer you refer. As your referral base continues to grow, it wouldn’t be tough to imagine affiliates generating some significant passive income. With so much money to be made, it’s no surprise companies in the industry hope to recruit as many affiliates as possible. In fact, when MedStore.biz asked me to put their site under the microscope, they asked that I focus exclusively on their affiliate program. When landing on the affiliate information page, you’ll immediately see that MedStore boats an impressive ...

It's my world : Debt Solution Companies - Under The Microscope
2008-02-06 17:28:00
Debt solution companies have been under the microscope recently, ever-more as debt in the UK continues to grow. As consumers, we should welcome such interest in these companies as, after all, they are looking after our money. We want our questions answered - such as; How do we know they are reputable? How many clients do they have? How long have they been established? What solutions do they offer? As the governing bodies & independent consumer watchdog's take interest, our questions will be answered. The UK has serious debt problems. Spending is out of control and many people don't know what to do or where to turn when it comes to sorting out their debt problems. The market for these debt solution companies is only getting bigger by the day. Many critics of these debt solution companies believe some are constantly trying to push customers towards agreements that will only benefit them, with little regard for the customers actual needs. You only have to look at the number of peop...

MaryKate Olsen under the microscope in Heath Ledger death; or is she?
2008-01-25 20:18:00
Mary-Kate Olsen has had a charmed life. But she's never had it easy. The "Full-House"-turned-movie star has recovered from anorexia for 4 years now. Still, she's lived the Britney Spears life of having to dodge paprazzi and live a life behind closed doors. Now the question is how she handles the increased attention she's receiving because of the role she played in the aftermath of the discovery of Heath Ledger's body. She's never had it easy, actually, because she's been stained by the media since going public with her struggles with eating disorders in 2004. Instead of focusing on her recovery, the media has sought to portray her as a "dirty girl" - like Britney - who plays it on the wild side.Because she's living this kind of "charmed" life, eating disorders can't possibly be the explanation for everything, the media believes - hence the rumors of potential drug abuse and other mischief that she's allegedly engaged in.The New York Post was at it again today (Jan. 25), postin...
New ultra-powerful microscope to provide closer look at atomic world
2008-01-25 13:08:00
Scientists have created a new ultra-powerful microscope, which will enable them to study atoms within materials more closer than ever before.    Known as SuperSTEM 2 (Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope), this microscope has been created by a collaboration of scientists from the universities of Liverpool, Glasgow and Leeds and the Daresbury Laboratory.   What the SuperSTEM 2 does is that it can show an atom at 20 million times its size. At 20 million times its size, an atom would measure approximately 5 mm across.   However, it is not just the scale of magnification that makes SuperSTEM 2 unique - it is also the sharpness of the image, its capability to provide elemental and chemical data about atoms and its stability.   The microscope works by scanning a beam that has been focussed down to the size of an atom, across a sample, providing chemical information on the sample at the same time.   Although scanning transmission electron microscopy has...
