Microscopy and the Anthrax Attacks
2008-08-22 20:37:00
In the fall of 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) convened two blue-ribbon panels to determine how to best investigate a series of anthrax attacks. Letters containing bacillus anthracis, the spores that cause the disease anthrax, had been mailed to several news-media outlets and t
Question About Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images
2008-02-18 19:13:00
Hi again guys! is there any relation between the surface roughness and mechanical/structural properties of the material? if you know anything about it can you kindly reply on this post or if you know a site where i can find some answers to "enlighten" me. Thanks!
CONFOCAL LASER SCANNING MICROSCOPY
2008-01-22 11:55:00
Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM or LSCM) is a technique for obtaining high-resolution optical images. The key feature of confocal microscopy is its ability to produce in-focus images of thick specimens, a process known as optical sectioning. Images are acquired point-by-point and reconstructed with a computer, allowing three-dimensional reconstructions of topologically-complex objects.DESCRIPTIONIn a confocal laser scanning microscope, a laser beam passes through a light source aperture and then is focused by an objective lens into a small (ideally diffraction limited) focal volume within a fluorescent specimen. A mixture of emitted fluorescent light as well as reflected laser light from the illuminated spot is then recollected by the objective lens. A beam splitter separates the light mixture by allowing only the laser light to pass through and reflecting the fluorescent light into the detection apparatus. After passing a pinhole, the fluorescent light is detected by a pho...
CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY
2008-01-22 08:33:00
Confocal microscopy is an optical imaging technique used to increase micrograph contrast and/or to reconstruct three-dimensional images by using a spatial pinhole to eliminate out-of-focus light or flare in specimens that are thicker than the focal plane. This technique has been gaining popularity in the scientific and industrial communities. Typical applications include life sciences and semiconductor inspection.Confocal microscopy enables the visualization and imaging of fixed as well as living cells and tissues that contain fluorescent probes (antibodies, green fluorescent proteins, dyes, substrates). This technique allows sharply defined optical sections to be collected, from which three dimensional rendering and movies can be created.(Human cytomegalovirus infected human endothelial cells. Multicolor Immunofluorescence (IF). Blue: DAPI = cellular DNA. Green = GFP (green fluorescence protein). Red + Magenta = two different viral proteins. Captured with a Zeiss LSM510 laser scann...

Scanning Probe Microscopy in Life Sciences - 6th International
2007-10-06 05:17:00
When : 9 Oct 2007Where : Berlin, GermanyJPK Instruments and the Charité will hold the 6th international workshop "Scanning Probe Microscopy in Life Sciences" in Berlin, which covers the application of Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) to areas such as biochemical and medical research. Continuously growing over the recent years, we expect more than 100 scientists to attend the meeting to hear about recent developments in interdisciplinary research fields presented by our international speakers. As always we invited reowned scientists to talk about their latest results. Invited talksWeb site : http://www.spm-workshop.jpk.com-/
High-Throughput Microscopy and Functional Proteomics for Cell Migration
2007-10-03 13:51:00
This is a repost from June 13, 2006, that brings back some experimental issues I was having then… The journal for the International Society for Analytical Cytology has an interesting methods paper out titled Functional proteomics for cell migration. It’s opening premise is: Determining the activity-function relationships of signaling proteins to cellular phenotypic changes in living ...
Reflectance Confocal Microscopy
2007-07-13 08:01:00
I was very fortunate to have been chosen to present at the Residents & Fellows Symposium at the American Academy of Dermatology Meeting (San Francisco, 2006). This was also my first time to present at the Fellows Symposium.I presented on "Reflectance Confocal Microscopy of Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinoma" on behalf of co-investigators Drs. Busam KJ, Benvenuto-Andrade C, Scope A, Gill M, Marghoob AA, González S and Halpern AC, with very good feedback from the audience who were impressed with the quality of the images taken with the confocal microscope. I had worked on the imaging of several pigmented basal cell cancers as part of my fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and summarized the findings in this presentation. Confocal microscopy was able to demonstrate tumor aggregations demonstrating palisading cells, cord-like structures and nodules with irregular borders and variable brightness; these represented nests of pigmented basaloid tumor cells on histopathology, ...
