Microsoft updates Windows Vista search to version 4.0
2008-06-06 06:35:00 The built-in search feature of Windows Vista is no match for the Spotlight search feature of Mac OSX which is unobtrusive when indexing, fast to find your files right off the bat and just smarter. Microsoft is playing catch-up with its search feature and with the latest update may just be getting there. Windows Search 4.0 is available for almost every modern 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows including Vista with SP1, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003, Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008. The update is not available via Windows Update and must be downloaded manually from Microsoft. The search isn?t necessarily any smarter and in that respect is no match for Spotlight but there are a couple new features worth noting. According to ZDnet, Windows Search 4.0 improves indexing speed and support for indexing encrypted files has been added. It also supports indexing files on networked computers and drives. It seems in order for this to work on Vista, SP1 must be installed. I have u...

Microsoft Updates Windows Without User Permission, Apologizes
2007-09-14 16:02:00 Microsoft (MSFT) has been quietly updating Windows even when users have turned off automatic updates and without notifying users, according to reports and posts on Microsoft discussion boards.Even though the updates ended up being benign and vital to the function of Windows Updates, such a breach of trust could end up harming Microsoft's reputation.Over the last few weeks, without user approval, Windows Update has updated nine small executable files in both Windows XP and Windows Vista. "I did not download this and my Windows Update is still not set to automatic," a poster named Engle wrote on a Microsoft discussion board. "This has got me really puzzled." Both eWeek Labs and Windows Secrets report that they have confirmed cases of Windows Update downloading and installing an update without permission. The updates in question actually updated Windows Update's own software. If Windows Update doesn't update itself, it stops functioning properly and is not able to recognize when new ...

Microsoft Updates IE7 Anti-Phishing Filter
2007-02-11 04:37:01 Back in December, Microsoft issued a fix for the IE7 anti-phishing filter but it did not totally fix the problem. There have been several complaints that this filter really slows down the IE7 browser, so much so that users have been disabling anti-phishing. This, of course, defeats the purpose of having it available in the first place. So, Microsoft has issued another upgrade for the Anti-Phishing filter on IE7 (they actually did this a few weeks ago – I am just slow ). So, if you are one of the users that have been less-than satisfied with the IE7 anti-phishing filter performance, hop over to Microsoft’s web site and you can download the latest update. Hopefully, this one will do the trick. An anti-phishing filter is really a good idea but I am still going to stick with Firefox . Tags: ie7, anti-phishing filter, microsoft, firefox
