There are so many "boundary issues" around Los Gatos that it's mind boggling. For newcomers to the area, it's already diffucult to understand how the school district lines do not follow the town boundaries. Then there's the whole issue of "mailing address" vs being "in the town". The 95033 zip code means "Los Gatos Mountains" and also means "not part of the actual Town of Los Gatos". No voting rights. No police (sheriff instead). And so on. The Los Gatos mountain schools are highly regarded. Normally, the elementary schools feed, eventually, to Los Gatos High School. The schools are a leading guage of property values, so the question of which schools is a BIG deal physically, emotionally, and economically. LAURENS, S.C. - A former middle school teacher was sent to prison for six years Tuesday for having sexual encounters with five teenage boys. Authorities said Allenna Ward, 24, met 14- and 15-year-old boys at the school where she taught as well as at a motel, a park and behind a restaurant. "I apologize from the depths of my heart," Ward said in court. Police began investigating last year after school officials found a note believed to have been written by Ward to one of the boys. Some of the victims were students at Bell Street Middle School in Clinton, where Ward taught. She was fired about a year ago. Ward pleaded guilty in September to three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three lewd acts on a minor. Forensic psychiatrist Donna Schwartz-Watts said Ward is not a pedophile, but rather a childlike victim suffering from personality disorders and a repressed childhood. It comes from the recent community meeting on December 10th about closing Kingsbury Middle School. We have spent weeks on this article. There was much for us to learn. First, I'm surprised that parents would delegate these responsibilities to schools. Do they think that the school would do a better job than them? Should the school select the students' Christmas presents as well? Then, I realized what may be going on here. First, some parents may just be lazy- a contemptible position unless a parent is confident that the school has the exact same values as them. Second, parents may be thinking about the children who don't have support systems, "Mine are OK, but what about the kids who have nobody to help them." I wouldn't want to give up my authority because of the lowest common denominator, but some would, I guess. Third, the poll probably asked everybody. That means people without kids who probably would say "yes" to anything the school does to help children without considering the larger implications. So much for the old school, abstinence only sex ed motto... King Middle School in Portland, Maine is taking a different (read: realistic) approach, making a full range of contraceptives - including condoms, birth control pills and patches - available to its students at the school's health center.  These kids, mostly ages 11-13, need only to complete a physical exam to be eligible to receive birth control prescriptions. Okay, granted it is Maine and maybe there's not much else to do, but 11-year-olds having sex?  I guess the video of the lady giving birth isn't enough to scare kids anymore.  The question then becomes, is making birth control available at this age the solution, or will it encourage kids further? -Mike

Conor's First Days At Middle School, So Far So Good

So far so good. Conor is fortunate to have some well trained people involved with his education this year. The aides split their time with him but most of his day is spent with 2 aides with experience and training from the UNB-CEL Autism Intervention Training program and a resource teacher equally well qualified. The Nashwaaksis Middle School is very well organized which is in itself a good thing. There have been some hitches. Conor's work area has a noisy overhead light and that is being looked into. The changes in his daily schedule have caused him to be a bit agitated at night but, autism or not, many children (and their parents), require a period of adjustment the first week back at school. And he is still staying up a bit too late for school schedule. But overall things are working out well. Even as I am typing this comment Conor has come over to take another look at the inset image of Nashwaaksis Middle School - and smile.So far, so good.

Transitions are often difficult for children with autism, particularly those at the lower functioning end of the autism spectrum, for whom it is more difficult to explain major changes in their lives. As the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer, I can once again stroll the school grounds with my camera, photographing students, plants, and whatever else catches my eye. Here are a few snapshots of our school campus in bloom. Look for the cherry trees "Where's Waldo" style. "Hi teacher!" The school staff maintains some amazing gardens all around the campus.
