A Short History of the Middle East
2012-01-03 09:22:00 From a purely American point of view, we have only one ally, Israel, in the Middle East and the Obama administration has treated it like an enemy. Israel has understandably concluded it cannot depend on the U.S. for support. In the midst of the turmoil, Israel is particularly vulnerable and will be until the current ...

Anthem of a middle-aged mom
2011-12-27 18:36:00 I had some time alone yesterday, which for a mom is a precious commodity. Â It was unplanned, this time alone, and most of it was spent in the car and scouring a variety of Targets (city and suburban, yo) for half price Reese Peanut Butter Trees. 12.10.11: One year since Sen. Sanders' filibuster as Middle Class melts awa
2011-12-10 19:55:00 Senator Sanders, Stray Birds, and Republican Clownsby Jude CowellWith certain entities and their agents within our government working hard to collapse America (like a phoenix arising from the ashes of their one-world-government Utopian dream of chaos leading to ultimate control by an unelected few), here is an ice sculpture from a hot June 18, 2011 day in NYC which perfectly illustrates what Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said during his filibuster on Capitol Hill, a place where you'd think the American people could expect their grievances to be addressed on a regular basis and their needs and issues to be served. But no.Instead, we get performances from the GOP Theater of The Absurd. And all their time-wasting, special-interest promoting and protecting gambits are played in full costume upon our dime and against the best interests of the majority. Their contempt for we-the-people knows no bounds and neither does their greed for more more more money and power, as the Senator corr...
Changing the Rules in the Middle of the Game
2011-12-03 14:30:00 Angela Merkel is leading the call for a rule change, a rewiring of the basic treaty that binds the EU. But is it both too much and too late? The market action suggests that time is indeed running out, and so we’ll look at the likely consequences. Then I glance over the other way and take notice of news out of China that may be of import. Plus a few links for your weekend listening“pleasure.”-; There is lots to cover, so let’s get started. Changing the Rules I have been writing for a very long time about the changes needed to the EU treaty if Europe is to survive. Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East
2011-11-28 19:12:00 Let’s peel our eyes away from the eurozone disaster momentarily and take a look at another crisis – one with just as much potential to impact our global financial system. As we’ve discussed in Outside the Box before, Iran’s trump card is not its nuclear capability but rather its opportune location next to the very narrow, very important Strait of Hormuz … through which no less than 40% of the world’s seaborne oil passes. As the US leaves Iraq, Iran is ready and waiting to fill the void and extend its regional influence. So where’s the next turf war? A shaky Syria, where the Iranian-Saudi-US balance of power will continue to play out. If you haven’t been following the . . . → Read More: Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East

10 Questions with THE MIDDLE Star Atticus Shaffer
2011-11-02 21:03:00 When your parents name you after a character in To a Kill a Mockingbird, a passion for reading probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. What should come as a surprise though is that Atticus Shaffer’s love of the printed word is partially responsible for where he finds himself today, playing Brick Heck, the hilarious youngest child on THE MIDDLE. We recently had the pleasure of catching up with the incredibly well-spoken young actor to find out what he’s reading now, which big-time movie star he’d next like to see play his teacher, and the fringe benefits that come with being one of the break-out stars of a hit ABC series. Was acting something you always wanted to do? Atticus Shaffer: What it was is that my Mom and I really loved to read. We’d always read out loud, make character voices and I was an above age reader at the time. And because of that my Mom — who saw one of my Dad’s co-worker’s son in a magazine — thought maybe I cou...

Impressive Calm on the First Day of Middle School
2011-09-23 06:27:00 Before school started this year, I had to spend several days convincing nervous Dova to take the bus on the first day of school. She insisted that someone drive her to school and walk her to her classroom because she wouldn't know where to go. Second grade is now her third year at our elementary school, and I was confident that taking the bus would not be a problem. Maybe she was concerned that it was the first time she would be taking the bus without older brother Adam, although she would never admit it. She couldn't understand that every kid starts out not knowing where their classrooms is and that the teachers magically escort each and every one of them. No students wander the halls lost all day! Anyway, all my energy was spent of calming her down, that I completely dropped the ball with Adam, who was going to middle school for the first time. Starting middle school in fifth grade at the age of ten is definitely innocence lost in my book. But I ca...

Middle School messed me up, but I'm okay now
2011-06-04 17:48:00 Last night we took a ride on our Harley which let me tell you, on a night like last night there is nothing like it. As the passenger I really have nothing to do other than think and enjoy the ride. About halfway through the trip, I snapped to attention when I realized we were driving by the school where I attended seventh grade. Suddenly a rush of oh my God that was probably one of the worst years of my life came over me. There were so many things wrong with that year, I have been forever traumatized. Not that being an adolescent female wasn't tough enough, I had to add being quite possibly the biggest nerd to the mix....

Jobs: Middle School Endorsement Confusion
2011-03-25 03:47:00 Some of the middle school teachers at schools being consolidated are worried that they might not only have to change schools and administrators but also might be in danger of losing their jobs. I could try and pretend to understand the details but it's probably better if I just share the documents (below) and let those of you who are certification experts figure this out. It has something to do with the 1997 grandfather clause, middle school vs. junior high endorsements, and consolidation. There are at least a few folks out there who are extremely concerned and understandably confused. ...

It's no so bad being in the middle
2011-02-12 13:30:00 Two weeks ago I wrote about Karla's experiences being the middle child and how this is especially difficult for her and us. But, in retrospect it's not that difficult on her sisters. Gaby and Karla can play very well together "big girls'" games such as Wii. There's the regular fighting but it's no like they can't stand each other. Then when Karla and Andrea play a game for younger gilrs, they can also play very well. Again, there's the ususal fighting but Karla hasn't demonstrated not liking her baby sister. I've heard many stories where an older sibling has tried to physically hurt or get rid of the new baby. We we haven't seen this reaction. Although, the spacing of my girls...
Makings of a Middle Class Misfit
2011-02-11 07:19:00 Thank God for the City of Big Shoulders that squeezed me right into the makings of the middle class as the oldest daughter of four. To have any less on the NW side is blasphemous. Eighteen years of plaid skirts and collared shirts invited a whole new level of education and a new world of culture that I never knew existed.
Dreamfullofzen: Middle Eastern Improv
2011-02-07 19:18:00 Dreamfullofzen: Hey All, Another noodling around zentar video. Last vid I was enjoying some Lydian sounds, but the whole point of me doing the zentar was to have access to sounds of the east, microtones & Ornamental embellishments. I've tried playing some Maqams on Duduk, but not with much luck, mostly due to not having the technical chops yet to be able to perform accurate microtonal stuff on Duduk (hard enough playing regular tunning on it!). I'm fairly well versed on Hijaz's modal construction, but I've wanted to use more of Rast & Bayati, since those two modes are particular to Egyptian folk music heard commonly in allot of tunes. I can play them ok, but constructing phrases around the tone levels of these modes is still something new to me. Other way, enjoy the noodling Zentar - Middle Eastern Improv

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with THE MIDDLE Star Charlie McDermott
2010-10-27 21:09:00 Have you noticed an appreciable difference in the number of people that come up to you on the street this season with THE MIDDLE performing so well for ABC on Wednesday night? Charlie McDermott: Honestly — because we’ve been working a lot harder this year and I haven’t really been walking down the street too much — I don’t know! But just from the ratings and talking to members of the media it seems kind of apparent that we’ve had an increased amount success. Last week’s plot that saw the Heck family host a foreign exchange student was reportedly inspired by star Patricia Heaton’s real-life. Have the writers ever borrowed a story from your real life, and if given the chance, what would you like to see in terms of your character’s future? The writers haven’t really asked me for any story ideas yet, and part of that is when you have Patty [Patricia Heaton], who is a ten year sitcom veteran [EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND] and a mother of fou...

FILM: A Free Soul - in the middle, it's great
2010-10-23 10:28:00 The story: The posh daughter (Norma Shearer) of an alcoholic defence attorney (Lionel Barrymore) falls for a crook (Clark Gable) despite being engaged to a polo champion. Which relationship does she value the most?It starts out looking like a simple choice - will the high class dame marry the rogue or the stiff - but the relationship that matters in A Free Soul is between Shearer and Lionel Barrymore as her dad. They're both addicts, and A Free Soul features a surprisingly complex ride into the world of his 'disease', anchored by a bargain between the two of them that, once struck, launches the film onto another level of emotional complexity. None of the characters are quite what they seem. Shearer is a warm and deceptively classic presence, oozing sex appeal. She lolls on chaise longue with a predator's gaze, practically daring Gable to put his arms around her. At times she overacts, but she also registers passion with an unnerving ferocity, and from beneath a knowingly co...
Can the Middle Class Survive This Economy?
2010-10-10 01:33:00 There are 14 million unemployed and underemployed workers or 17.7% of our population, either looking for a job or working in a job that is below their experience level and education. Many of these job seekers are middle class workers all trying to hold on to a lifestyle that they have become accustomed to. The comfortable lifestyle that the middle class has been living is evaporating before our eyes as our current administration continues to make bad decisions in an effort to stimulate our lethargic economy that only grew 1.7% in the second quarter of this year. Experts say we need 2.5% annual GDP growth to prevent our already high unemployment rate from rising. The economy needs to add...

Upper Middle Class Now Seeing Higher Foreclosures in Cook County
2010-08-15 18:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston As the housing bubble began to burst the lower middle class and poor areas of Cook County were immediately hit with mounting foreclosures. But now the upper middle class is seeing a higher rate. This only stands to logic. As the Obama depression widens, as home prices stay in a slump, and as more and more people lose their jobs it makes sense that the upper middle classes are beginning only now to lose their homes at a higher rate than before. After all, these people have been likely living off savings they had that the lower classes and poor didn't have to tide them over. But now those savings are being depleted. That and the...

Is The American Middle Class Disappearing?
2010-08-01 22:30:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Michael T. Snyder has a disheartening piece in the New York Post today that lays out 25 statistics that shows that the American middle class is dying. Snyder tells us his statistics "prove that the middle class is being systematically wiped out of existence in America." Further he says, "the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer at a staggering rate." Snyder's main point is that increasing government regulations on business is making it more and more expensive to employ people and that, in turn, is causing middle income jobs to disappear....
