Tuesday Gamethread/ Cubs at Giants 7:15 Left 9:15 Middle 10:15 Right
2008-07-02 00:15:00
Never been there, but I've heard its nice I don’t know about everyone one else, but after witnessing this weekends dismal display of pitching and less than stellar offense it was nice to see the team rebound on both fronts last night.   So the losing streak was at least interrupted and tonight they try for a new streak, hopefully one in the W column.  Of course the Cubs are without Aramis, who is still home for "family matters" (which I believe is because his wife is having a kid, but nobody seems to be printing that), Soriano is still out, D Lee is still a double play machine, and left field has been manned by a combination of Carrot Top and Eric Patterson's impersonation of an outfielder. But fear not, we still got DeRo! (for the record, that last part wasn't sarcasm) Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96 ERA) is pitching for the boys in blue tonight.  He got a little roughed up by Baltimore last week, but what can you do.  I'm hoping for a strong rebound to...
Utilities Shut Off Middle America
2008-06-25 13:02:00
A sure sign of collapse: Electricity and natural gas shutoffs are up at least 15% in several states compared with last year. Totals for some utilities have more than doubled. “We’re seeing a record number of shutoffs,” says Mark Wolfe, head of the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association, which represents programs that subsidize energy bills. An NEADA survey ...
Project Middle Class Death
2008-06-22 06:23:00
There have been quite a few articles lately about meatpacking plants in the US. Through the 1960's and 1970's, these were union jobs all filled by hard-working Americans. That's all gone now, and all of the work is now being done by illegal aliens or more recently refugees from foreign lands. Most of these articles have screamed about how no Americans are willing to do this kind of work. It's quite interesting how plenty of Americans were willing to do this admittedly unpleasant work in 60's and 70's, albeit at union wages that you could buy a house and raise a family on. The unions were broken via a corporate conspiracy. This plot has been unveiled an Atlantic Monthly article, but I have not been able to find it.First of all, the meatpacking companies moved their plants away from the large cities to smaller towns. It happened in LA - they moved to Las Vegas. There was no business reason at all to move to Vegas - it was done for the sole purpose of breaking the union. They hope...

Foreign intervention in Middle East
2008-06-10 19:21:00
PressTV's Middle East Today takes a look at the effects of foreign mediation in Middle East disputes. Is it time for the West to bow out, and let the region sort out its own problems?Iraq?s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is on his third official visit to Tehran since taking office ? and his second this year. High on the agenda in his meetings with foreign ministry officials, the president and leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyid Ali Khamanei, are the plans by Washington to forge a long term strategic relationship with Iraq ? a status of forces agreement ? or SOFA. Critics of the deal say it would reduce Iraq to the level of a vassal state of the US, and a base for US military adventures in the region. Maliki has assured his neighbor that Iraq will not become a base for threats against Tehran. But even if a watered down version of the SOFA security pact goes through ? and all indications are that it will - these are promises that Maliki is hardly in a po...
A Slow Pitch Right Down The Middle

I should go ahead and tell you that this is a repost. I know it's a horrible thing to do for a Sunday or Monday (depending on when you read this), but to make up for it, I can offer you a new new podcast to listen to. Besides, I have to think of something memorable to do for my next post on Monday night, which will be my 600th.Feel free to offer suggestions because after 599 posts, I am running out of things to write about. As proof of that, I offer the fact that I almost posted my confession of love for home water filtration today instead of this repost. Fortunately I realized ahead of time that it would have been a 'Pur' mistake to do so. Hmmm, have I written about cheese lately? That always goes over well....When you get your inspiration from making fun of odd news stories, it doesn?t get any easier than this: A woman with the last name of Butts was accused of stealing toilet paper from an Iowa Courthouse. Ok, it could have been just a little better; her last name could have b...

A brand new powers in a brand new middle East "1-2"
2008-06-05 21:25:00
This is a brand new Middle East for sure that suits a brand new world , another step towards the new middle East where the Usually leading countries are substituted with other countries in the leading place,it is not about dictatorship regimes and minorities . In the last 20Th century Egypt and Saudi Arabia were the leading the countries in the Middle East, Egypt was the first then Saudi Arabia was the second , then in the last 27 blessed years the roles were switched especially in the last two years , Saudi Arabia became the leader and we are the follower , of course both were following the American Orders blindly. Saudi Arabia was always the faithful ally for the United States ,so it is not a surprise , Egypt has its own ups and downs with America since the revolution or the coup of 1952 "it was actually the first one to be backed by the American administration then in the region" Any how it seems that the United States got bored from these two dictatorship corrupte...

Golf Cart Stolen from Los Gatos United Soccer League at Fisher Middle Schoo
2008-06-03 16:31:00
The good folks at the Los Gatos United Soccer League are asking for the help of the townsfolk to help them find their older golf cart, which is used by president of the league, Ed San Juan, for picking up trash cans after soccer games at Fisher. Families and friends of the many players who've enjoyed the field at Fisher (including my family) have appreciated having the cans brought out to the field and the 1991 Yamaha was a good way to transport them on and off the field for the game times. Last seen Thursday evening, the golf cart was discovered missing on Saturday morning in an area littered with about 20 used, empty beer cans. Police were called to the scene and state that bolt cutters were used to get the golf cart loose. Description of cart: "It's a weathered white 1991 Yamaha gas golf cart (nothing fancy), it has a top with a front windshield, and a black flat-bed used for picking up garbage." To contact the LGUSL about the cart, you may email them via the contacts page of...
Logjam at middle linebacker
2008-06-03 13:02:00
When the Green Bay Packers are forced with trimming their roster down to 53 players in early September, they could face some tough decisions at middle linebacker. The Packers currently have four middle linebackers that might deserve to be playing on Sundays, but unfortunately only one can play at a time.A lot can happen between now and September, but right now the Packers have Nick Barnett, Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge, and Danny Lansanah all pushing for playing time.Barnett is coming off his best season in the NFL at middle linebacker, and there's no reason to think he won't be the starter come opening day. At the very least, there's plenty of competition to keep Barnett sharp once training camp opens. Plus the Packers look to have a viable backup if anything should happen to Barnett. The top backup as of this moment is Bishop. With Barnett gone from this past Thursday's OTA practice, Bishop has been getting plenty of repetitions with the No. 1 defense too. And according to report...
Middle Eastern Feast
2008-06-03 05:20:00
Falafel. I became obsessed with it in high school. I ate it every Tuesday, in between track practice and piano lessons. When I got to college, there was thankfully an amazing falafel place next to my dorm (Pauly's Pocket). Soon though, I was on a bit of a falafel overload. I needed a break. It wasn't until this year that I re-discovered falafel. Thanks in part to living in Brookline, home to many delicious Middle Eastern eateries (Rami's=amazing) and hanging out with Sara, another falafel fan. So after traveling around Boston and surrounding areas, testing out falafel, we decided we needed to make our own. Sara found a fairly simple, healthy falafel recipe from Martha Stewart and we threw our own little Middle Eastern night.First on the menu was the falafel of course. One important fact Sara and I discovered- chickpeas are also known as garbanzo beans. This may come in handy when you're searching for chickpeas. Anyway. You're going to need a little food processor to make this, ...

International Middle East Media Center sez: Only McKinney supports Palesti
2008-05-24 18:47:00
While I am sure many who favor Nader will point out that he too supports Palestinian rights as well, but apparently I am not the only one who thinks that building something lasting, like a political party, is important.Given that Cynthia McKinney is in fact the only party associated presidential candidate with broad name recognition who has publicly supported Palestinian Rights, as is pointed out in this article by the IMEMC, I can't help but wonder if those who also support Palestinian Rights have looked in their bank accounts for a few dollars to give to McKinney's bid for federal matching funds. Afterall, if neither the Democratic nor the Republican nominee is going to stand for Human Rights, doesn't it make sense to help someone who does secure matching funds to carry that message forward?

The Highs and Lows of a Middle Tennessee Realtor
2008-05-22 09:09:00
Wow, what a ride. This is so much like a roller coaster at my favorite Theme park, Six Flags over Texas that I should be made to pay admission! Let me start at a good place, the beginning. I was a successful Project Manager for one of the largest privately held building companies in America. A great place to work until I got downsized, not really out, but they changed my job description to the point where I cried Uncle. Being a Middle aged man and chief provider for my family, I did the only sensible thing. I asked for a severance package and decided to enter the field of Real Estate when no one seemed to be making money at it. Makes sense to leave a six figure a year job to jump into self employment right? I could not be happier. After getting through the licensing process and paying all the fees, dues and start up cost, I have settled into selling Real Property. I hope in time to share all the highs and lows of this life change so that others will h...

Ad Wars: Oregon's Smith Seeks "Middle Ground"
2008-05-20 16:41:00
Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Senate Watch: LouisianaThe NRSC is stretching a little bit in its latest attack, this time against Louisiana Democrat Mary Landrieu. Taking a page out of the 2004 presidential playbook, the web ad portrays Landrieu as a flip-flopper, citing several recent bills that Landrieu voted both for and against. Of course, it's a ridiculous charge given the nature of the Senate, but the NRSC is apparently hoping voters are stupid. The most egregious part of the video, however, is the effort to suggest Landrieu lacks leadership Louisiana voters deserve because she hasn't made an endorsement in the Democratic presidential primary. Seriously? No doubt the NRSC is disappointed that Landrieu hasn't endorsed Obama, so that they could attempt to tie her to his "bitter" comments (that ploy hasn't been so successful in recent House contests, just ask the NRCC). Senate Watch: OregonRepublican Gordon Smith is up with a new ad, "Middle Gro...
