Good Economics or a Midlife Crisis? (The Salvaged Bike Odyssey - Part 2)
2008-08-14 13:00:00 If you read the first part of this epic journey about getting a salvaged bike back on the road, you know it started when repair costs to my old '84 Honda Magna VF700 became cost prohibitive. So I decided to take the money I had and shoot for the stars. The problem with shooting for the stars, how
My Midlife Crisis ... In The Kitchen
2008-04-17 22:05:00 Not a crisis, it sounds so dramatic, but a period of transition, yes...honestly...as a kitchen designer, that is. I'm no longer so concerned with the kitchen triangle. For the most part, the kitchen triangle is fading away. Why? Because of several things:one's personal work habits taking precedence (a good thing)the introduction of so many different shapes, sizes, and types of appliancesdesigning multiple work stations into a kitchenmulti generations cooking together as fun rather than a taskthe kitchen being even more the hub of the house attracting people like ants to a picnicBut, it's funny, the thing that is really making me totally rethink the kitchen is its role as a social place. We've all read the magazines talking about the kitchen as the "gathering place." We've heard that for years, and there is the island with a few stools, etc. etc. But, my eyes have been opened even further, since last August after having visited the Hansen showroom in Copenhagen an...

Am I having a midlife crisis?
2008-02-12 20:23:00 The Miami Herald had an article today entitled, 5 things you didn't know about midlife crisis. Among those five points were, "Am I Having one?" in which the article said doctors do believe it is a genuine condition with the following symptoms, among others: irritability loss of sex drive impotence fatigue depression hair loss weight gain loss of ability to recover quickly from injuries It also said that a recent "Happiness" study showed that both men and women's happiness followed a U-shaped curve, with the most unhappy time being at the bottom of the curve, or about age 44. If find all this interesting, but I have to point out that I don't possess an of the symptoms from the bullet-point list above. Except, maybe irritability, but then I've always been a tad grouchy. So, I guess I'm not having a milife crisis after all. Funny thing about that list though. If you look at it closely, I'll bet you know people in their 20's and 30's who have the symptoms listed. Of course, t...

Short Leash Leads To Midlife Crisis
2007-09-25 02:52:00 Having gone through a couple of midlife crises myself, I think I can spot one when I see one. There is a crisis happening to a member of my household. No, it?s not my husband (I am his midlife crisis), but my dog. Seriously, I?m pretty sure he?s going through some sort of doggie midlife ...
Midlife Crisis
2007-08-30 18:06:00 There is a common phenomenon called Midlife crisis. It refers to a transition period from young adult to midlife. That is time when many men and women have more or less established their family, career. Work has become a routine and losses its freshness and challenging; Children are now more independent, they start to have their own friends; spouse has become very familiar, very often, too familiar to care more. Suddenly there is an emptiness and weariness for day to day routine. They often experience a disharmony and dismemberment that is a call for growth in consciousness and a change of life. One of my friends, in his early 40?s, having a lucrative job and a comfortable home and a loving family, but the urge to change was so strong that he finally decided to resign from his job and became a full time minister; another one, being a stay at home for six years, she devoted her time and energy to look after her two daughters, when they entered school, she suddenly felt quite at los...
Famous Five Have Midlife Crisis
2007-08-29 13:17:00 Blognor Regis draws my attention to a loony project to bring back the Famous Five as middle aged sleuths in a television programme. Leave that stuff to Angela Lansbury, CSI and The Bill. The idea just seems completely loopy. Leave them alone. Let their memory rest with that generation of readers. I don't want to imagine what George ended up like.More interesting would be a contemporary take on the group. As one of the commenters on the article noted, the following titles might work.Five get an ASBO, Five go Joyriding, Five get hammered on White Lightning and Five get High.
Middle School But Not Midlife Crisis Revisited
2007-08-22 17:57:00 Last week I got an email from David Ing asking if the incoherency of my last blog entry was due to the same jet lag that he was experiencing. We had just been in Tokyo for the annual International Society for the Systems Sciences meeting. I took a look at that entry again and he’s ...

Middle School and Midlife Crisis
2007-08-16 11:22:00 There are times in life when nothing seems right. Midlife or middle school, the “crisis” is the same. On Tuesday teacher and blogger Dan Brown in Huffington Post told why New York’s mayor is completely off track in his approach to middle school improvement: Rather than making school a nurturing and personal experience, kids, as early as ...

No Surprise at Wal-Mart's Midlife Crisis
2007-04-26 22:40:00 This week's (April 30, 2007) BusinessWeek cover story caught my eye: the headline is "Wal-Mart's Midlife Crisis," detailing the retailer's slowing growth and diminished prospects. I, for one, am not really surprised at this revelation. You see, our Investor Advisory Service newsletter followed Wal-Mart until nearly two years ago, June 2005, when it was recommended for sale from subscriber's portfolios.
Wal-Mart?s Midlife Crisis
2007-04-21 06:40:00 If Wal-Mart seems short of answers at the moment, it might well be because there aren’t any good ones. Increasingly, it appears that America’s largest corporation has steered itself into a slow-growth cul de sac from which there is no escape. “There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is ...

Is it really a midlife crisis?
2006-12-02 16:12:07 With the aging of the baby boom generation, about 2 million U.S. women a year are now entering menopause, which signals the end of their reproductive life. That's about 180,000 women a month, or about 6,000 a day. The shutdown of all those ovaries leads to some major hormonal shifts that have been blamed for everything from dry skin to mental illness. (It also leads to a multibillion-dollar trade in prescription medications, over-the-counter remedies, how-to publications, designer fans and lines of loose-fitting or perspiration-wicking clothing, among other commodities.)
