Good Economics or a Midlife Crisis? (The Salvaged Bike Odyssey - Part 2)
2008-08-14 13:00:00
If you read the first part of this epic journey about getting a salvaged bike back on the road, you know it started when repair costs to my old '84 Honda Magna VF700 became cost prohibitive. So I decided to take the money I had and shoot for the stars. The problem with shooting for the stars, how

My Midlife Crisis ... In The Kitchen
2008-04-17 22:05:00
Not a crisis, it sounds so dramatic, but a period of transition, yes...honestly...as a kitchen designer, that is. I'm no longer so concerned with the kitchen triangle. For the most part, the kitchen triangle is fading away. Why? Because of several things:one's personal work habits taking precedence (a good thing)the introduction of so many different shapes, sizes, and types of appliancesdesigning multiple work stations into a kitchenmulti generations cooking together as fun rather than a taskthe kitchen being even more the hub of the house attracting people like ants to a picnicBut, it's funny, the thing that is really making me totally rethink the kitchen is its role as a social place. We've all read the magazines talking about the kitchen as the "gathering place." We've heard that for years, and there is the island with a few stools, etc. etc. But, my eyes have been opened even further, since last August after having visited the Hansen showroom in Copenhagen an...

The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife (Hardcover)
2008-03-02 07:23:00
The need for change as we get older?an emotional pressure for one phase of our lives to transition into another?is a human phenomenon, neither male nor female. There simply comes a time in our lives?not fundamentally different from the way puberty separates childhood from adulthood?when it?s time for one part of ourselves to die and for something new to be born. The purpose of this book by best-selling author and lecturer Marianne Williamson is to psychologically and spiritually reframe this transition so that it leads to a wonderful sense of joy and awakening. In our ability to rethink our lives lies our greatest power to change them. What we have called ?middle age? need not be seen as a turning point toward death. It can be viewed as a magical turning point toward life as we?ve never known it, if we allow ourselves the power of an independent imagination?thought-forms that don?t flow in a perfunctory manner from ancient assumptions merely handed down to us, but rather flower into n...
THE AGE OF MIRACLES - Embracing the New Midlife - Marianne Williamson
2008-03-01 19:32:00
Are you aging?  Or, feeling you are old?  If so, who said so? If someone suddenly awakened you at 2 AM and asked you how old you are, what would you say? Most people, without thinking, would say they were somewhere in their thirties.  And even if they are 70, they might be correct.  Because the spirit ...
Midlife suicides unexpectly soar acording to The Centers for Disease Contro
2008-02-20 06:05:00
Experts says suicide is depression left untreated. Today The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that theory with the release of a study of deaths in America:"Health officials find it surprising, and baffling: The suicide rate among 45-to-54-year-olds increased a lot from 1999 to 2004, far outpacing changes in nearly every other age group, according to a study of the nation's death rates released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For women 45 to 54, the rate leaped 31 percent. For men, it increased nearly 20 percent."That is certainly a break from trends of the past," said Ann Haas, the research director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. By contrast, the suicide rate for 15-to-19-year-olds increased less than 2 percent in that five-year period — and decreased among people 65 and older. The question is why. What happened in 1999 that caused the suicide rate to suddenly rise primarily for those in midlife? For health experts...
Am I having a midlife crisis?
2008-02-12 20:23:00
The Miami Herald had an article today entitled, 5 things you didn't know about midlife crisis. Among those five points were, "Am I Having one?" in which the article said doctors do believe it is a genuine condition with the following symptoms, among others: irritability loss of sex drive impotence fatigue depression hair loss weight gain loss of ability to recover quickly from injuries It also said that a recent "Happiness" study showed that both men and women's happiness followed a U-shaped curve, with the most unhappy time being at the bottom of the curve, or about age 44. If find all this interesting, but I have to point out that I don't possess an of the symptoms from the bullet-point list above. Except, maybe irritability, but then I've always been a tad grouchy. So, I guess I'm not having a milife crisis after all. Funny thing about that list though. If you look at it closely, I'll bet you know people in their 20's and 30's who have the symptoms listed. Of course, t...

Midlife Crisis
2007-08-30 18:06:00
There is a common phenomenon called Midlife crisis. It refers to a transition period from young adult to midlife. That is time when many men and women have more or less established their family, career. Work has become a routine and losses its freshness and challenging; Children are now more independent, they start to have their own friends; spouse has become very familiar, very often, too familiar to care more. Suddenly there is an emptiness and weariness for day to day routine. They often experience a disharmony and dismemberment that is a call for growth in consciousness and a change of life. One of my friends, in his early 40?s, having a lucrative job and a comfortable home and a loving family, but the urge to change was so strong that he finally decided to resign from his job and became a full time minister; another one, being a stay at home for six years, she devoted her time and energy to look after her two daughters, when they entered school, she suddenly felt quite at los...
Famous Five Have Midlife Crisis
2007-08-29 13:17:00
Blognor Regis draws my attention to a loony project to bring back the Famous Five as middle aged sleuths in a television programme. Leave that stuff to Angela Lansbury, CSI and The Bill. The idea just seems completely loopy. Leave them alone. Let their memory rest with that generation of readers. I don't want to imagine what George ended up like.More interesting would be a contemporary take on the group. As one of the commenters on the article noted, the following titles might work.Five get an ASBO, Five go Joyriding, Five get hammered on White Lightning and Five get High.

Old or Young-Depends Who You Ask

I?ve been trying to get more organized lately and I was going through the boxes in my closet of all of my old photos.  They?re completely unorganized.  I ran across my class picture from 4th grade.  You remember the ones where we are all standing on bleachers, with the taller kids on the top and ...
Middle School and Midlife Crisis
2007-08-16 11:22:00
There are times in life when nothing seems right. Midlife or middle school, the “crisis” is the same. On Tuesday teacher and blogger Dan Brown in Huffington Post told why New York’s mayor is completely off track in his approach to middle school improvement: Rather than making school a nurturing and personal experience, kids, as early as ...

No Surprise at Wal-Mart's Midlife Crisis
2007-04-26 22:40:00
This week's (April 30, 2007) BusinessWeek cover story caught my eye: the headline is "Wal-Mart's Midlife Crisis," detailing the retailer's slowing growth and diminished prospects. I, for one, am not really surprised at this revelation. You see, our Investor Advisory Service newsletter followed Wal-Mart until nearly two years ago, June 2005, when it was recommended for sale from subscriber's portfolios.
Wal-Mart?s Midlife Crisis
2007-04-21 06:40:00
If Wal-Mart seems short of answers at the moment, it might well be because there aren’t any good ones. Increasingly, it appears that America’s largest corporation has steered itself into a slow-growth cul de sac from which there is no escape. “There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is ...

The Gift of Letting Go In Midlife
2007-04-07 17:04:00
There is a very big gift waiting on the other end of learning how to let go when we reach middle age. The gift is an abundance of energy. In midlife, we begin to see how precious energy is and how without it, nothing else really matters. After all, who cares if you are able to amass a large sum of money if you don't have the energy to enjoy it? Who cares if you are blessed with beautiful grandchildren if you don't have the energy to get down on your hands and knees and play with them? Who cares if you live to be a hundred if your life is dull and boring?I believe that everything is made of energy....everything. At its most primal level, everything IS energy. Even money is energy! In fact, my concept of God/ess, great mystery, spirit is Energy. I've said for a long time that God is a verb and not a noun. As human beings we are made of life force energy and are constantly being infused with it. What we do with that energy is completely up to us. We are totally in charge of it and b...

Is it really a midlife crisis?
2006-12-02 16:12:07
With the aging of the baby boom generation, about 2 million U.S. women a year are now entering menopause, which signals the end of their reproductive life. That's about 180,000 women a month, or about 6,000 a day. The shutdown of all those ovaries leads to some major hormonal shifts that have been blamed for everything from dry skin to mental illness. (It also leads to a multibillion-dollar trade in prescription medications, over-the-counter remedies, how-to publications, designer fans and lines of loose-fitting or perspiration-wicking clothing, among other commodities.)
