The study used electronic tagging to track the cephalopods. W.F Gilly and colleagues tagged seven of the animals with pop-up satellite transmitters over the course of the last few years, and they report their latest findings in a new feature article at Marine Ecology Progress Series. The results show that jumbo squid spend most of the day deeper than 250m, diving repeatedly into a midwater hypoxic zone called the oxygen minimum layer, where the oxygen concentration is less than 5% of surface values.
