Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was scratched from Thursday’s lineup with a pulled left quadriceps muscle. Breaking news out of Detroit: Miguel Cabrera was scratched from today's starting lineup with pain in his left quadriceps, which also bothered him some during spring training. Bummer for his fantasy owners. Maybe a bigger bummer for the Tigers, who are in danger of getting swept by the Royals to open their season.

2008-03-24 20:28:00
It is being reported that the Detroit Tigers have come to terms with recently acquired third baseman Miguel Cabrera on a contract extension that is believed to keep the slugger with the Tigers for the next eight years and worth $153 million, or $19 million per season. The deal has yet to be announced ...

Miguel Cabrera Set To Sign Extension
2008-03-24 10:01:00
MONDAY, 8:57am: Though we don't have an official announcement and press conference from the Tigers yet, it's obvious that an agreement has been reached.  Sabernomics thinks Cabrera will be worth $268MM over this time period; PECOTA feels differently.  Cabrera will only be 32 when this contract ends.  Though their ages don't match up, Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki believe this deal could be a comparable for Ryan Howard. SUNDAY, 8:52pm: Danny Knobler clarifies: it's a seven-year extension worth around $140MM, starting with the 2009 season.  Regardless, it's a team-friendly deal. 12:18am: According to ESPN's Enquire Rojas, Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera is set to sign an eight-year, $153.3MM extension.  That's $19.16MM per year for 2009-16.  Definitely less than I expected him to sign for.  We'll examine the deal more closely when details become available.
Miguel Cabrera vs. MORP
2008-03-23 05:24:00
With news broken by ESPN Desportes on a Miguel Cabrera signing - a near certainty once Cabrera came over to the Tigers - the question becomes one of value. Did the Tigers pay “too much” for Cabrera’s services? To lock up Cabrera through his age-33 season, the report is that he’ll get $153.3 million. PECOTA ...

Tigers' Talks With Miguel Cabrera Continue
2008-03-18 10:15:00
John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press informs us that the Tigers' talks with third baseman Miguel Cabrera about a long-term deal are ongoing.  Signing the superstar is the team's top priority. The popular opinion is that Cabrera will get something in the neighborhood of ten years and $200MM. He's contracted for '08 at $11.3MM and then has one more arbitration year before free agent eligibility.  I could be wrong, but I don't know of any athlete other than A-Rod who broke the $200MM barrier.

SI.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Detroit Tigers and Miguel Cabrera may be discussing a long-term extention. Miguel Cabrera Talking Extension
2008-02-29 15:43:00
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera's agent have "begun to talk" about a long-term deal.  Heyman believes a deal could be hammered out fairly quickly given the nice fit with Detroit for Cabrera.  Heyman doesn't have inside info on the years or amount, but got Cabrera to admit that ten years, $200MM sounded about right. Would an extension start with 2009, Cabrera's last arbitration year?  I imagine so, though maybe the ten years would start with 2010. Regardless, Cabrera's level of production is truly worth $20MM annually into the forseeable future.  Doesn't hurt that he's gotten into shape a bit, either.

What Will Keep Miguel Cabrera In Detroit?
2008-02-02 12:50:00
Lynn Henning of The Detroit News considers what the Detroit Tigers will need to offer Miguel Cabrera to sign him to a long-term deal.  He estimates the Tigers will be in the neighborhood of five years and $100 million, or even six years and $125 million (numbers, Henning points out, that have not been considered by Detroit since the Juan Gonzalez negotiations). The question is, will Cabrera and his agent, Fernando Cuza, agree to such an offer? In Detroit's favor is Cabrera's comfort-level with the new club.  Henning cites Miggy's pain-free negotiations for an $11.8 million 2008 contract when he could have received more in arbitration, and the fact that he's making quick friends. Working against them are Cabrera's enormous talent and the thick wallets of both the Red Sox and Yankees.  Henning writes, "The reality in January 2008 is that the Tigers never will be able to match the Yankees and Red Sox in any kind of future salary auction." But Carlos Guillen and Kenn...

Miguel Cabrera Gets $11.3MM
2008-01-18 14:26:00
Miguel Cabrera agreed on a salary around what was expected with the Tigers - $11.3MM for 2008.  I recently talked to the Detroit Free Press's Jon Paul Morosi about the long-term possibilities, if you're interested. Danny Knobler says this was Cabrera's agents' preference - get the one-year deal done with today's deadline and then work on a something long-term.
Unfair Expectations
2007-12-10 00:16:00
Detroit News columnist Jerry Green (who's old enough to use the word "balderdash" without blushing) felt he had to let us know that "perfection [is] now demanded of new-look Tigers." It's unclear who, exactly, is demanding this flawless performance, other than Green himself. The Tigers must win the World Series next October -- or bust. A division title would not be satisfactory. Not any more. Another American League pennant, the same as the Tigers unexpectedly won in 2006, would be insufficient. The Tigers have to win the pennant plus the World Series next season or the monster trade of the other day becomes a flop. The Tigers didn't make the playoffs last year. One trade later, they have to win the World Series or be considered a disgrace? I mean sure, they picked up a great player, but they also finished 8 games behind the Indians last year, and 6 games behind the Yankees in the Wild Card. This trade certainly improves them in the short term (as does the acquisition of Edgar Rent...

Big Trade: Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for Prospects?

It looks like the Detroit Tigers have made the first blockbuster trade of the Winter Meetings. Well, they lost the division to the Indians, and now they have made a move that potentially may get them back into the playoffs again in 2008.The Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers have agreed in principle on a trade that will send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for key prospects, sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons. The Tigers would send outfielder Cameron Maybin, pitcher Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three other minor league pitchers to the Marlins.and...6:20 p.m., from Peter Gammons? Doh! Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis Traded!
2007-12-05 01:16:00
Just hours after Ken Rosenthal broke the news that the Florida Marlins and the Detroit Tigers were engaged in trade discussions revolving around Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis going to Detroit for Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, the trade occurs.  In addition to Miller and Maybin, the Tigers are getting catcher Mike Rubello and three minor league pitchers. While this appears to be much less than what the Angels had to pay for Cabrera alone, the names of the minor league pitchers may change that.  I have a hard time believing it unless one of those players is a PTBNL who will be named one year after he signed his first professional contract.  That PTBNL would be Mike Porcello. That doubt aside, is this how the Marlins addressed their catching situation?  They use their two biggest trading chips to get Mike Rubello?  I wonder if the team decided it could live with another year of Miguel Olivo. I am curious now whether this trade makes the Angels serious...
MLB Rumors Update: Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, Miguel Cabrera
2007-12-04 22:01:00
Sean McAdam reports the Angels have jumped into the Johan Santana Sweepstakes.  The team was told SP Jered Weaver would have to be included.  Given the holes at 3B and CF for the Twins, one would thing 3B Brandon Wood and CF Reggie Willits would be attractive. Espn.com writers Buster Olney, Peter Gammons and Amy Nelson provide some interesting information.  Ms. Nelson reports the Dodgers and Orioles' are in heavy negotiations on an Erik Bedard trade that would fill two of the Orioles' needs - centerfield and closer.  The players mentioned are Matt Kemp and Jonathan Broxton. Buster Olney writes the Yankees have not talked with the Twins today, and he confirms the Angels do have interest in Johan Santana.  he also writes the Blue Jays are interested in Erik Bedard.  he feels the Jays have the young pitcher to anchor the offer. Finally, Peter Gammons provides additional information on the Red Sox offer for Johan Santana.  A 5th player, 1B Ryan Kalis...
MLB Rumor: Miguel Cabrera To The Detroit Tigers
2007-12-04 18:59:00
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports a huge trade is brewing between the Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers.  In exchange for SP Dontrelle Willis and 3B Miguel Cabrera, the Marlins will receive OF Cameron Maybin and SP Andrew Miller as the headliners in a package full of young players.  While this is exciting, I don't see how the two Tigers prospects are better than the three the Angels offered - Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis and a pitcher with the possibility of CF Reggie Willits.   This doesn't account for the Dontrelle Willis portion either.  This is an exciting rumor, but seems more like an attempt for attention than a serious deal. Ron Neyer of ESPN.com chimes in during his weekly Tuesday Chat:Q: How about this rumor I just heard... Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, and somebody else? Thoughts? Rob Neyer: (12:25 PM ET ) Yeah, that's the hot one right now. MLB Rumors: Miguel Tejada and Miguel Cabrera
2007-12-03 17:47:00
While many believe Johan Santana is the onlyu player being traded this off-season, there are still other players who are Plans B through Z for many teams.  Here are a couple updates on two of them - Baltomore Oriole Miguel Cabrera (Plan B/C/D) and Florida Marlin Miguel Cabrera (Plan A2). Miguel Cabera Jeff Zrebiec says the Orioles come to Nashville ready to deal everyone, but particularly ss/3B Miguel Tejada and SP Erik Bedard.  The team wants two high-level prospects for Tejada, but the Cardinals already balked at that price.  Bedard would bring a package as big as the one that fetches Johan Santana, but Zrebiec reports there is still disagreement whether the team should deal him. Mike DiGiovanna reports the O's asked the Angels for Jered Weaver and Brandon Wood, but the Angels are reluctant to deal Wood, who is looked at as the team's starting SS in 2009.  There was no indication what the Angels consider "reasonable" for Tejada, though.  I'm of the ilk ...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana & Miguel Cabrera
2007-12-02 20:40:00
With the Winter Meetings about to commence, here are some updates on the states of trade discussions/rumors for Johan Santana and Miguel Cabrera.  On the Johan Santana front, there appears to be more complete information than what had been peddled in the past couple weeks.  La Velle E. Neal III writes: According to a person close to the Twins' negotiations, the club will take a hard line in trade talks involving Santana during this week's winter meetings in Nashville....The source said the Twins have made their demands clear to the Red Sox, Yankees and other clubs interested in Santana and they will not compromise... John Harper of the Daily News fills-in a bit of the "demands" from the Yankees' perspective...apparently what they want is another top-tier prospect from the Yankees, either pitcher Alan Horne or outfielder Austin Jackson, to go along with Hughes and center fielder Melky Cabrera.... Recall Peter Gammons hinted the Twins wanted Hughes, Cabrera and Jackson....
MLB Rumors: Miguel Cabrera
2007-12-01 21:47:00
This past week's developments on the Miguel Cabrera Trade Front involved two potential trading partners claiming the Marlins are not dealing in good faith (Arte Moreno of the Angels and Brian Sabean of the Giants) with one of them claiming the Marlins treated a third potential partner, the Dodgers, the same way. Jayson Stark reports the Angels and Marlins are at a stalemate that has the Angels telling the Marlins to approach them if a trade for Miguel Cabrera is to occur.  He says two players from the Angels have been agreed upon by both sides - 2B Howie Kendrick and C Jeff Mathis.  The sticking point, irrational sticking point from the Angels' POV, is the inclusion of two of these three pitchers - Ervin Santana, joe Saunders and Nick Adenhart, without altering the hitting pieces.
MLB Rumors: Miguel Cabrera, Pirates, White Sox, Randy Johnson
2007-11-29 18:59:00
Mike DiGiovanna reports Angels owner Arte Moreno had two trades for Miguel Cabrera nixed when the Marlins backed out.  Moreno also says the Marlins have been dealing the same way with the Dodgers. As an aside, DiGiovanna has again reiterated that the Angels do not want to deal 3B Brandon Wood.  This leads me to beleive he will be given the opportunity to be a contributor in 2008 at either 3B or SS depending on the resolution of the Cabrera issues. Clark Spencer gets a quote from Marlins' president of baseball operations, Larry Beinfest, on the statements by Angels' owner Arte Moreno that the Marlins have gotten cold feet twice in agreed-upon trades for Miguel Cabrera.  In typical denial-equals-guilt fashion, Beinfest said, ``We do not comment on trades or trade rumors.'' If this is how the Marlins demonstrate their professionalism, then expect there to be a change in the front office barring an elevation to big-market status by the Marlins. A team that must always...

Unsure whether his team could work out a trade for Miguel Cabrera, Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno didn’t waste time when new general manager Tony Reagins suggested they try to add offense by signing Torii Hunter. “Obviously, we’ve been negotiating the Cabrera deal, and we have not been able to consummate that deal. MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Miguel Cabrera, Jose Guillen
2007-11-27 20:08:00
While all the air was sucked out of the Hot Stove League by the presence of Twins' two-time Cy Young winner, Johan Santana, there are still other players on either the free agent market or trade one.  Even though a Mets-related Santana update leads off, there are updates on Miguel Cabrera to the Angels, what the Brewers will do at closer, Coco Crisp and a Jose Guillen update. New York Post:If the Mets are to trade for Santana, though, they will not be including any of their three core offensive players in the deal: Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran would all be off limits. LA Times:The Angels, according to baseball sources, are willing to part with just about any player who has been mentioned in trade rumors -- second baseman Howie Kendrick, catcher Jeff Mathis, pitchers Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders or Nick Adenhart, outfielder Reggie Willits and perhaps top infield prospect Brandon Wood. But if the Angels are going to trade two young pitchers to the Marlins, they ar...
MLB Rumors: Miguel Cabrera
2007-11-26 19:47:00
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Juan C. Rodriguez is back with an update on the trade market for Florida marlins' 3B Miguel Cabrera and how a deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim would work for the Marlins.  he writes:If the Marlins don't budge from their four-player demand for Miguel Cabrera, here's one potential return from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: second baseman Howie Kendrick, catcher Jeff Mathis, outfielder Reggie Willits and a pitcher, anyone from Ervin Santana to Joe Saunders to Nick Adenhart. The Marlins could immediately insert either Santana or Saunders into their rotation. The guy they may prefer is Adenhart if for no other reason because his major league service time clock isn't ticking yet. Kendrick would be an option to replace Cabrera at third, but that assignment likely would go to Dan Uggla. His 30-homer power would play well there. Defensively, he knows the position from having manned it extensively as a minor leaguer. In Willits and Mat...

MLB Rumors: Miguel Cabrera, Miguel Tejada And Yankees and Mets
2007-11-24 14:06:00
Earlier this week, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported that Miguel Cabrera could be dealt by Thanksgiving.  Well that came and passed.  However, he did mention that the two Los Angeles teams had just one point of disagreement with the Marlins about either team's trade.  That one player was not named. Yesterday morning's Miami Herald, Marlins' beat writer Clark Spencer provides the details left out of the Anaheim offer.  He writes: Along with Willits, who would plug one need for the Marlins -- a center fielder -- the Angels also would likely give up second baseman Howie Kendrick and catcher Jeff Mathis. A source said the biggest sticking point to completing a deal at this point is whether the Angels also would throw in a fourth player: pitching prospect Nick Adenhart. So the Marlins are not interested in Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders.  They would prefer 100% potential versus the performance certainty that a major leaguer provides.  If this trad...
Latest Miguel Cabrera Development
2007-11-23 05:46:00
Speaking of Miguel Cabrera, Mike Giovanni of the LA Times offers the most recent analysis of the Angels' Torri Hunter signing and what it may mean to the team's pursuit of Marlins' 3B Miguel Cabrera.  He writes the Angels can now more easily include 2B Howie Kendrick in a deal for Cabrera by moving Chone Figgins to 2B.  More intersting, though, is what he proposes the possible offer to be - Kendrick, catcher Jeff Mathis, prospect Nick Adenhart and one of Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders or Jered Weaver. No Reggie Willits and no Brandon Wood.  I do wonder if  the possible offer is much more than previous rumors unadjusted for the presences of Hunter, but, if not it is not, then the depth of the Angels system is highlighted.  The team has acquired a 200+ inning workhorse, signed a top-flight free agent and would have dealt for a 24-year-old four-time All-Star and still have a top infield power prospect and a .391 OBP CF to deal.
Why Miguel Cabrera Will Soon Be An Angel: Torri Hunter Signs With Angels
2007-11-22 13:18:00
Happy Thanksgiving!  I woke this morning to the news that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed centerfielder Torri Hunter.  Mike Giovanna of the LA Times says it best: The Angels pulled off their second stunning -- and somewhat perplexing -- move of the week late Wednesday night, signing free-agent center fielder Torii Hunter to a five-year, $90-million contract First the Angels trade for a starting pitcher when they already had six - Lackey, Escobar, Weaver, Saunders, Santana and Mosely.  Now they add a second centerfielder.  A third CF if one includes rookie Reggie Willits. Which leads to the conclusion an deal with the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera nears, and it now includes CF Reggie Willits.  Willits would fill the Marlins' need for a centerfielder and a major league ready player at the same time.  A .391 OBP last year says Willits could be the best CF the Marlins could get. With a starting pitcher and centerfielder to include, the Angels ne...
MLB Rumors: Torri Hunter, Melky Cabrera & Miguel Cabrera
2007-11-21 15:50:00
In an article originally posted on Monday but updated yesterday, Ken Rosenthal reported that the Dodgers or Angels could complete a trade by Thanksgiving for Marlins' 3B Miguel Cabrera.  The sticking point for either team was the inclusion of one player. Rosenthal reports the Marlins want OF Matt Kemp and LHP Clayton Kershaw in a four-player package.  Is that one player Kemp?  Kershaw? Or do the Dodgers only want a three-player package? "The Angels , according to a rival executive, have offered a strong package -- Kendrick, right-hander Ervin Santana, right-handed reliever Chris Bootcheck and another player, possibly Adenhart," is also written.  While another source tells him the Angels did not offer that combination of names, it is not difficult to see one player being the difference i.e. Joe Saunders instead of Santana. * The Royals remain interested in CF Torri Hunter despite rumors of a pending deal with the White Sox.  The Kansas City Star reports "th...

MLB Rumors: Torri Hunter, Miguel Tejada & Miguel Cabrera
2007-11-20 16:10:00
This morning, I awoke to the news that the Chicago White Sox were close to signing free agent centerfielder Torri Hunter.  I was surprised because Hunter met with Rangers' owner Tom Hicks yesterday, and I had visions of Hunter getting an offer he couldn't refuse.  At the very least, Hicks would leave Hunter with no uncertainty about his desire for Hunter to patrol CF for the Rangers next season. The Dallas Morning News reports in today's paper that Hicks would offer Hunter a contract quickly as long as the meeting went well.  The Rangers are also saying Hunter wanted to wait until after Thanksgiving to make a decision. Meanwhile, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that sources close to both sides say Hunter could sign with the White Sox within a week.  "The source said that "the climate'' was there for a deal to be announced soon, unless another team comes in at the last second and blows Hunter away with an offer." Could Hunter have been driving-up the White Sox...
Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors
2007-11-16 20:33:00
Juan Rodriguez of The South Florida Sun-Sentinel contributes heavily to the Hot Stove League rumor mill in his latest article.  His front office source indicated there are "eight teams [that] have expressed varying degrees of interest in acquiring the 24-year-old All-Star third baseman: the Angels, Dodgers, Giants, Rangers, White Sox, Nationals, Indians and Red Sox," and that the San Francisco Giants are a sleeper team in the Cabrera Sweepstakes. Amongst the potential Giants to likely be involved would be SPs Tim Lincecum and either Matt Cain or Noah Lowry and OFs Rajai Davis and Fred Lewis.  Mr.  Rodiruguez also proffers, in addition to Brandon Wood and Howie Kendrick, the Angels could off catcher Jeff Mathis, who his sources reveal, the Marlins want in a Cabrera deal.  He also guesses the White Sox could meet the Marlins demands with a package that include some combination of the following:  Josh Fields, Brian N. Anderson, Gio Gonzalez, Lance Broadway or A...
Angels and Dodgers Battling For Miguel Cabrera
