Mike Lowell Holds Fundraising Event...Pedroia Embarasses Himself
2008-03-03 18:44:00 Mike Lowell held a cancer fund raiser in Florida yesterday where there was a "Dancing with the Stars" component. Papelbon and Pedroia participated...here is what Pedroia and Tito said about the event: "[Papelbon's shirt] was terrible," Pedroia said. "I thought my body pulled it off, and his didn’t. That’s my personal opinion. A lot of women, they loved it." Pedroia threw his shirt to owner John Henry, nearly killing manager Terry Francona in the process. "I thought I was going to have a heart attack," Francona said. "My chest hurt, I was laughing so h.ard. Pedroia is a moron. You can write that. He is a moron. He was dancing, he looked like a puppet on a string. He’s such a little gamer, but he’s looking over knowing we were crushing him. He’s drinking the Red Bull. He’s exhausted. He’s trying to do these things with this girl he’s not strong enough to do. It was hilarious. "They showed me something getting up on that stage, because I guarantee they were scared ...

AROD, MO and Mike Lowell
2007-11-20 11:56:00 AROD has won the AL MVP award, and deservedly so, collecting all but two of the first place votes. His stats dwarfed all others, and the only thing a baseball fan can say is that the voters got this one right.Mariano Rivera has decided to rejoin the New York Yankees in what ended up to be a three year deal worth $45 million. That makes him the highest paid reliever in all of baseball. The Yanks would have been in trouble without him, and they did the right thing (for them) by signing him. Me? I'd rather have Paps...any day, any way, any time. And last but certainly not least, the Boston Red Sox have agreed in principle with Mike Lowell on a three year deal worth $37.5 million, which matches the annual payout of the last minute four year deal offered by the Phillies. Here are a couple facts about the deal and what teammate Curt Schilling had to say...."Lowell, who hit the free agent market last Tuesday, had been seeking a four-year deal, and ESPN reported Monday that the Phillies mad...

Reunited! Mike Lowell Re-Signs With The Red Sox...
2007-11-19 19:44:00 The Red Sox played hardball with Mike Lowell and won. Lowell realized he could not do any better than Boston, thus he gave in. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Mike Lowell has re-signed with the Red Sox.Free-agent third baseman Mike Lowell has agreed in principle to the framework of a three-year deal to return to the Red Sox, major league baseball sources close to the negotiations have confirmed.Lowell, 33, tested the free-agent waters, and may have received at least one four-year offer from another undisclosed team, but in the end the Sox third baseman elected to stay where he was most comfortable. Sources indicate that the three year deal is worth in the $36-$38 million range. The Red Sox had placed a deadline of today for Lowell to make up his mind. If Lowell had passed on the Sox offer, which remained pretty close to the original offer they made the World Series MVP, they were ready to begin implmenting their Plan B. var AdBrite_Title_Color = 'FFCC66'; var AdB...

2007-11-19 19:17:00 From the Globe, with thanks to Matt, who writes the blog Fenway West (on my link list!)..."Free-agent third baseman Mike Lowell has agreed in principle to the framework of a three-year deal to return to the Red Sox, major league baseball sources close to the negotiations have confirmed.Lowell, 33, tested the free-agent waters, and may have received at least one four-year offer from another undisclosed team, but in the end the Sox third baseman elected to stay where he was most comfortable. Mike Lowell To Resign With The Red Sox
2007-11-19 15:54:00 ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting he "heard early this morning: Mike Lowell is close to re-signing with the Red Sox." Now the focus will turn to where the Red Sox will trade CF Coco Crisp, and whether the team offers RP Eric Gagne arbitration and risk his accepting it. If he did, then the Red Sox could only cut his 2007 salary by 20%. Assuming the contract bonus' count in the base, then the Red Sox would risk paying Gagne $6.8MM ($8.5MM*.80) if he lost his case or $8.5MM plus a raise if he won. I don't think the chance for a 1st round pick in next June's draft is worth the risk. Why not offer Cubs fireballer Kerry Wood a two-year deal for the same money with incentives for more?

Red Sox Versus Yankees For Mike Lowell
2007-11-16 11:52:00 Here we go again on this Friday November morning. The winds have turned around to blow from the northwest, chilling everybody in the Northeast. And the winds of change on the baseball front have turned more sinister, too. This is from the Hartford Courant...."The Cardinals, Braves, Angels and Phillies, four of seven teams identified in the past 48 hours as prime suitors, have backed off. Only the Dodgers have not publicly taken themselves out of the race. The Yankees might be the one team that trumps the Red Sox's reported three-year offer in the $40 million range. Thursday night, Boston's WBZ-TV reported the Yankees have offered Lowell a four-year deal between $56 million and $60 million, but with the caveat that the Gold Glove winner switch to first base. Lowell turns 34 in February."Peter here, and yes, shades of Johnny Damon again. The Boston Red Sox, again acting stubbornly, will have to up their modest three year offer to a four year deal worth close to the amount of money th...

Did Mike Lowell Really Receive Four Offers?
2007-11-16 03:43:00 This has all been covered here on MLBTR, but I guess it's gotten lost in the shuffle because I'm receiving tons of email about it. Maybe I'll try to build something into the site to better keep up with the big names besides just reading through everything. In the meantime, you can always use the search bar on the sidebar. Anyway, let's talk about this Mike Lowell rumor from WHDH Channel 7 News out of Boston. These guys are getting a ton of traffic to this rumor and I just gave them more. Oh well. The uncredited rumor says a source close to Lowell indicates that he's received four-year offers in the $55-60MM range from the Braves, Angels, Cardinals, and Yankees. GM Frank Wren debunked the Braves portion today. Esteemed St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Bernie Miklasz killed the Cardinals portion last night. The Boston Herald's Rob Bradford shot down the Angels rumor. So we have an uncredited rumor that is currently 0 for 3. A different Bo...

Our Second Baseman Supreme...And A Mike Lowell Downer
2007-11-13 12:13:00 He finished tenth in the American League with a .317 batting average, the highest EVER for a rookie second baseman. He led all the rookies in doubles with 39. He was second with a .380 on base average and third in runs with 86. His name is Dustin Pedroia, and he ran away with the American League Rookie of the Year balloting, finishing with 24 of the 28 first place votes. And he's a team player. He said this after the Red Sox conquered the baseball world yet again....."The only thing I cared about was trying to help the team win," Pedroia said. "That was our ultimate goal. We set out to try to win the American League East and try to win the World Series. We accomplished both of those things. I think that if you're dedicated into team goals, individual goals will come later."Peter here, and that's quite a mature and smart way to look at things. And speaking of looking, we'll be watching Dustin Pedroia man Fenway Park's second base for many, many years to come. And what could be b...
Lowell Set to Test the Market, A-Rod Looms [Addison Quale]
2007-11-13 06:02:00 The Boston Globe is reporting that an hour away from the deadline, Lowell and the Sox still haven't reached a deal. He wants to see if there's a 4 year deal out there for him somewhere. The Sox seem intent on a 3 year deal. It seems a bit reminiscent of perhaps Pedro's departure from the Sox. I believe they offered him a 3 year deal and he spurned it for the Mets' 4 year deal. As great as Pedro was, time has shown that the Sox made the right move there. I think if they were to let go of Lowell by not offering him a 4 year deal, it'd be the right move too. He's a great guy and a very good ballplayer. But 2007 was above his ability it seems. And he ain't getting any younger. If he were to leave, that would open up speculation about A-Rod of course. I wonder what Sox fans would think about having him in Boston. Perhaps ambivalent at best. We like to think that cheering for our team is a moral thing to do. We like to think that our home team truly deserves to win because they're...

If Not Mike Lowell, Then Who?
2007-11-11 11:46:00 Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald wrote a very interesting article in the Sunday edition of that newspaper. It's title is "Plan B Begins With A," and it is all about what the Red Sox will do in case Mike Lowell goes elsewhere. Here's a little bit of it....I'll link the entire thought provoking piece, so just click on the title of this post. Here's that taste...."The Red Sox certainly seem sincere about their attempt to re-sign Lowell, who is (and should be) their first choice. The question is at what cost. From the very start of this negotiation, the sticking point was going to be the term of the deal, be it three years or four. (The Sox have offered the former and Lowell wants the latter.) Most have correctly assumed, too, that Lowell will earn between $12-$15 million annually, which puts a three-year package between $36-$45 million. So what did the Sox do out of the gate? They offered $36 million, a proposal that almost certainly will be rejected, if it has not been already....
It's Up To You, Mr. Mike Lowell....
2007-11-09 12:10:00 The Boston Red Sox have offered a GUARANTEED three year contract deal to Mike Lowell and his agents, the Levinson brothers. A National Baseball League official, not named, said that the third baseman should be "very happy" with the terms of the contract-to-be (we have to hope!). But the signals coming out of Boston are more of the mixed variety. Read this, from the Boston Herald...."While they are not sending out any take-it-or-leave-it signals to his camp, the Red Sox made a three-year guaranteed offer to third baseman Mike Lowell, that one club source described as ?really strong.?As the general managers meetings concluded, there was a belief coming from the ballclub that their offer is competitive enough that if Lowell truly wants to re-sign with the Sox (!!!!!) -- which the club believes and which the club wants to happen -- then their three-year offer is significant enough to make him want to stay."Peter here, the exclamation points were mine, and that three year deal is on the ...
