Back in April, I examined at length the concept of things that are so lame, they're cool -- they go around the Coolness Continuum and move from Lame to Cool again.Things like the banjo, The Best Instrument That's So Lame It's Cool. The other day, I happened to hear a song I didn't even realize was on my iPod, but there it was: Moonshine, by Mike Oldfield:This is sort of a syzygy of Bests; it's proof that the banjo really is cool; Mike Oldfield creates great music and now it turns out he creates great music using the banjo. PLUS, Mike Oldfield already was nominated for Best Instrumental Song (Which Isn't Really An Instrumental) so now he figures into two Bests,PLUS-ER, Mike Oldfield wrote the music for The Exorcist, which is about the devil, which means that Mike Oldfield figures into two separate Best nominations and a whole theme week now, too.Based on all that, I'm going to go ahead and say that Mike Oldfield is a SuperBest; and also that the banjo is clearly one tool that c...
Mike Oldfield - Music Of The Spheres
2008-04-28 20:05:00
Il titolo: ?Music Of The Spheres?. Già il titolo ?Music Of The Spheres?

Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow (1983)
2007-05-01 10:34:00
Composer Mike Oldfield rose to fame on the success of Tubular Bells, an eerie, album-length conceptual piece employed to stunning effect in the film The Exorcist. Born May 15, 1953, in Reading, England, Oldfield began his professional career at the age of 14, forming the Sallyangie folk duo with his sister Sally; a year later, the siblings issued their debut LP, Children of the Sun. By the age of 16, he was playing bass with Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers' group the Whole World alongside experimental classical arranger David Bedford and avant-garde jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill; within months, Oldfield was tapped to become the band's lead guitarist prior to recording the 1971 LP Shooting at the Moon.Tubular Bells, originally dubbed Opus 1, grew out of studio time gifted by Richard Branson, who at the time was running a mail-order record retail service. After its completion, Oldfield shopped the record to a series of labels, only to meet with rejection; frustrated, Branson decided...
