Steelers Draft Ziggy
2009-04-27 15:07:00
I received a text on Saturday evening from my SIL (that would be sister-in-law) notifying me that the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Ziggy. Obviously, I didn?t believe her since Ziggy is still a kitten, but more importantly, didn?t play football in college or attend any of the pre-draft workouts (at least that I know of). However, I have complete faith in Kevin Colbert, the Steelers? director of football operations, and Coach Mike Tomlin, so I trust their judgment. At 8 months, Ziggy is already 10 pounds and could continue to grow, which would work perfectly for a defensive lineman. Although I have never timed Ziggy in the 40-yard dash, I can attest that he is as quick as a cat. In addition, Ziggy has at least a 3-foot vertical leap that he uses to jump from the floor to the kitchen counter. The only negative is that Ziggy has character issues as demonstrated by the pictures below; however, I think the Steelers, and everyone else, just attributes this to Ziggy being young and per...
Super Bowl Champions!
2009-02-02 15:07:00
Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers for winning their sixth Super Bowl Championship by defeating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. I recommend visiting the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for full coverage of the game as well as any and all of the blogs listed in the links sections on the right for other takes on the game. While I remain amazed by the James Harrison interception and touchdown return and the Santonio Holmes winning catch, for now, I want to write about the Steelers in general as opposed to the specifics of the game. (I may write more about the specifics later today or sometime over the next few days.)I feel extremely lucky to have been born in Pittsburgh and to be a Steelers fan. I was too young to remember the first four Super Bowl titles, but learned all about the Steelers history from my dad and great uncle. Six Super Bowl championships are unprecedented and the tradition of excellence starts with the Rooney family. The Rooneys are model owners in the NFL as demo...

Steelers Questions
2008-11-18 15:54:00
Is James Harrison the first person in NFL history to be responsible for a safety for both his team and the opposing team in the same season? I can?t take credit for this question as I think Messiah asked this during our liveblog of the Steelers-Chargers game.Good question posed on DC Steeler Nation. Since the Steelers and Arizona Cardinals are both in first place and have identical 7-3 records, who would you rather as the coach of the Steelers: Mike Tomlin or Ken Whisenhunt? I may or may not share my answer later.Photo: Getty Images
Steelers-Jaguars Recap
2008-10-08 15:17:00
I?ll preface this post by writing that I have no idea what Al Michaels or John Madden said during Sunday night?s Pittsburgh Steelers-Jacksonville Jaguars game. I have not read recaps of the game by Pittsburgh newspapers, national sports websites or the Pittsburgh sports related blogs listed on my links list. The following are my comments, thoughts and pictures from attending the game live. This picture was taken a half hour before game time. Notice the large banner covering two sections on the top left and the Jaguars banner behind the end zone. Apparently, these seats and several other sections throughout the stadium are completely covered during the entire season to help the team avoid blackouts. That would never happen for the Steelers. Oh, Jacksonville has no problem selling these seats for the Florida-Georgia college football game.I really don?t know what to write about these guys. They were loud and somewhat annoying, but overall, pretty cool. Of course, I was not sitti...
Random Thoughts
2008-09-23 15:20:00
I have a lot to write about, so don't mind me while I'm all over the place. - Based on my drive to New Jersey this weekend, I declare Maryland to be the new Delaware. It took me two hours and 15 minutes to get from Arlington, VA to the tunnel in Baltimore on Friday afternoon and there was Maryland traffic on Sunday. No traffic on either day in Delaware. Plus, gas is more expensive at the Maryland House rest stop than its counterparts in Delaware and New Jersey. - Two comments about the Steelers game and this is nothing new from what you have already read elsewhere. First, the offensive line, um, struggled. Second, I still question why Coach Mike Tomlin didn?t kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter when the Steelers needed two scores. I was yelling at the TV even before Phil Simms did. Tomlin?s reason from Monday?s Post-Gazette: "Absolutely not," Tomlin replied. "We did not move the ball consistently enough to say that had we kicked the field goal and got the onside kick ...
Joe Biden is a Steelers Fan
2008-09-03 15:41:00
I knew there was a reason why I liked Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden. From The Washington Post (near the end of the article):On Friday night, when Obama and Biden met Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh, Biden recounted how "Old Mr. Rooney" -- Steelers owner Dan Rooney -- dispatched some players from his championship team to the hospital room in Wilmington where Biden's two toddler sons, Beau and Hunter, were recovering from the accident. They brought the boys an autographed football as a Christmas present. "And I have been a Steelers fan since that day," Biden told Tomlin.I?m wondering whether The Washington Post meant Art Rooney. Regardless, it was a nice thing for the Steelers to do.(from The Burgh Blog)The Washington Times has more about Mike Tomlin?s interaction with Barack Obama and Joe Biden."You've brightened what has been a miserable day," Tomlin told Obama. "I had to cut 23 guys this morning. Hardest day of the year."Obama told Tomlin, "Your own...
Mike Tomlin=Doc Brown
2007-10-17 09:30:00
Mike Tomlin never ceases to impress me with his talents as a football coach. So far this season he has brilliantly handled Alan Faneca’s difficult contract situation, seamlessly brought in a new regime after 15 years of Bill Cowher, and led the Steelers to a 4-1 start. But this week in Denver Tomlin could top all of that when he defeats the laws of science. In order to help his team adjust to the Denver altitude Tomlin claims the Steelers will use a mysterious “blood flow” machine. The only problem is that nobody seems to know what it is or that is even exists. Jack Daniels, who heads the U.S. distance running program at the Center for High Altitude Training at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., was baffled at the “blood flow” machine that Tomlin said will be used on the sideline Sunday night. Daniels is unaware of any such machinery or how it would work. “I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Daniels said. &r...
All About the Steelers
2007-08-09 01:45:00
I have not written about the Steelers for some time, so I wanted to share my thoughts about the preseason and the new mascot. As all Steelers fans already know, the team won their first preseason game on Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints. woo-hoo. I seriously could care less about preseason games. My only hopes for a typical preseason is that the first team plays decently in the few series they are actually in the game and, more importantly, that no one gets hurt. This year is a little different since Mike Tomlin is in his first year as a head coach, so I care that he?s getting ?game? experience in that position. However, I still vividly remember Steve Spurrier?s debut as the head coach for the Washington Redskins. The team was very impressive in his first preseason going undefeated. Over the next two seasons, the Redskins went 12-20 and the "ball coach" returned to the SEC. While I truly believe that Tomlin will have much more success as an NFL head coach than Sp...
Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin Gets First Win Of Preseason Over
2007-08-07 00:43:00
Mike Tomlin's first game as Steelers coach is 20-7 win over SaintsESPN - Associated PressCANTON, Ohio -- Mike Tomlin is a no-nonsense guy. So he didn't seem particularly interested in all the extracurriculars surrounding his debut as coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.Oh, he got a kick out of being interviewed by Deion Sanders before the game. And out of meeting the five new Hall of Fame members who were on hand for the preseason opener: Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Matthews, Roger Wehrli and Charlie Sanders.Otherwise, it was a business trip to Canton for only the third head coach of the franchise since 1969."I took myself out of it. I tried to create an environment for the coaches and players to do their jobs," Tomlin said Sunday night after a 20-7 victory over the New Orleans Saints. "You do that, you get involved in the process."The process of getting the 2005 NFL champions back to the top began well. Less than three minutes into the game, the Steelers were ahead to stay ...
New Coach Preview - Mike Tomlin
2007-06-14 21:02:00
Mike Tomlin - Pittsburgh Steelers Résumé Highlights: 1997 - WR/DB Coach, Arkansas State 1999 - DB Coach, Univ. of Cincinnati 2001 - DB Coach, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2006 - Def Coord, Minnesota Vikings 2007 - Head Coach, Pittsburgh Steelers Impact: Mike Tomlin is all about defense.  That's right, defense!  That's the way the Steelers like it!  And that's the way it was under former coach Bill Cowher so there won't be much change under the new coach.  He needs to see if rookie Lawrence Timmons can really replace Joey Porter and one of his starting cornerbacks was busted for a bar fight in a place called Margarita Mama's, but it's not as though he has a rebuilding job ahead of him.  Expect the same fantasy production from guys like James Farrior, Clark Haggans, and Troy Polamalu on the Pittsburgh defense this year.  The Steelers offense is another thing though.  Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt left for Arizona and Tomlin selected S...
