Two Milestones In One
2011-02-19 13:30:00
This week was an exciting week because our family went through 2 milestones.  The biggest is that we no longer have a nursery.  Andrea is two and a half and she no longer liked to sleep alone in her room.  She didn't mind sleeping in the crib, it was being away from her sisters that was the problem.  So we decided to get bunk beds for her and Karla.  Being that Karla and Andrea are small, they will sleep together on the bottom bunk.  This will continue for a while until Karla is old enough to sleep on the top bunk or we overcome our fear of her falling.  Anyway, both are small enough that we can get away with...

1.1.11
2011-01-01 08:54:00
Maligayang Pagdating 2011? Welcome 2011! I miss celebrating the New Year in the Philippines. January 1 is the most colourful day in the Philippines. Why, you ask? It?s because everybody is wearing their new and most colourful clothes today. I kid you not. Try driving around your city or locality and you?ll see what I mean =) But for us in Phnom Penh, it is an ordinary day. New Year?s eve and New Year?s day celebration here aren?t like that in the Philippines or any other western countries for that matter. Both days are not an official public holiday and can actually be uneventful, if not boring. However with the ever-increasing expat-community and tourists and the Khmer?s fascination for anything western, the international new year, and Christmas for that matter, is becoming more and more popular that restaurants, bars and hotels have made it a big deal ensuring endless dining and partying options not only in Phnom Penh but also in other key touristic locales like Siem Reap...
Wordless Wednesday 096: Go, go, armpit power!

One of the rare moments when my niece allowed us to take a photo of her
Happy birthday, Joshua!
2010-10-08 08:41:00
Six years ago, everyone in the household in Roxas City was frantic, rushing around in preparation for your arrival... of course, I had to come home, too, albeit 5months later, just to see you! At 5months, you were already an epitome of little boy charm and cuteness. You were the first apo (grandchild) in the family, and every one fell in love with you. Grandma would rush to check on you the moment she heard something. Grandpa beamed with pride when you showed him your toothless smile. Tito Bigg and Tito Jeck forgot about their barkadas after work and school to rush home just to play with you or see you before you sleep. I spent my short holiday looking after you so that Mamagirl could have some time for herself. It was a special moment for me having seen you, and held you in my arms, even only for a short time. Time flew so fast... from being the family's Superboy... I remember your Mamagirl telling me how you refused to take off your Superboy costume! ... to your current ...
A taste of Lebanese for our third!
2010-09-06 07:31:00
Last Tuesday (August 31), Rob and I celebrated our third year of marriage! Unlike in the past anniversaries where we went out of town for some whiff of sea breeze and  seafood fiesta, we stayed in the Penh and went to our favourite Lebanese restaurant.  It's been more than a year since we last visited Le Cedre, so it was a great choice for the night. We were hoping for a quiet dinner celebration and we got it alright. One thing I like about dining out in Phnom Penh is that  there are lots of restaurants offering authentic international cuisines - French, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Russian, Malaysian, Filipino, etc... - and almost all of these restos do not require reservations. When we arrived at Le Cedre, only three tables were occupied and were already done with their meals. By 9pm, we already had the whole place to ourselves. Nice, wasn't it? The lights were soft and there was a faint Lebanese music playing on the background and the hookah looked inviting....

Quickie... roses from our garden!
2010-08-31 03:57:00
In a few minutes I'll be on my merry way to meet with my PELUKA sisters Lui, Che, and Elma for our weekly coffee date. Thank God for friends! We are also missing our other sis, Josiet, who is in Manila for some family matters. We miss you and EJ. Come back already =)  But before I leave, let me just share with you this fresh flowers from our veranda garden. About three months or so, we decided to ditch our huge fish jar, bought another one, and plant roses on them. I'm glad we did, because the rose bushes are really thriving; not only that the  number of mosquitoes have noticeably decreased, we also are treated to fragrant-smelling flowers and pretty view from our kitchen window. We have lots of roses in different colours but my husband just picked four as the bottle can only  hold this many. Never mind the beer bottle, I'm going to replace it with a  proper flower vase today! Today we also celebrate a milestone... we are turning three! Yes, it is ou...
Photo Hunt #52: Numerical
2010-08-21 10:32:00
I have three pictures to share. First one is map showing the route that my husband took on his cycling trip of Western Europe: The numbers written in red ink represent the dates he spent on the camp sites in France. The following photos are Japanese samurai and geisha dolls on display at Asakusa, it was screaming take me home at me... I would've wanted to buy all these for souvenirs but darn these numbers - they're too expensive! Do the maths here, at the time I was in Tokyo, the dollar to yen exchange was $1 = 129yen.  So, I only got myself this pretty geisha doll with the green umbrella =)
Wordless Wednesday #89: Angkor 333 Car

Update: Duch guilty of crimes against humanity

... and is sentenced to 35 years in jail. It was the first verdict (Case Number One) in the Khmer Rouge trials and, according to the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor who was providing a live blogging update, emotions were running high inside the jam-packed ECCC courtroom when the verdict was announced. Many people were crying. Out in the capital's streets, particularly in our area, the road was noticeably quiet with less vehicles; most Cambodians were probably indoors watching the whole proceedings with much anticipation. Duch looked impassive as judges find him guilty of crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Convention. According to the verdict summary blogged live by the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor:Duch is not personally criminally responsible for the crimes at S-21... that is, the evidence is insufficient to conclude that he murdered or tortured anyone himself...But he is guilty by Joint Criminal Enterprise on a systematic level.Duch was "deeply enmeshed" at the c...

Happy Mother's Day!
2010-05-08 16:03:00
I just want to greet everyone a HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!  Photo Source I wish my husband had said these words today, but alas, he is English and they celebrate it on the fourth Sunday of the Lent...  which means, it already passed. Seriously now... I want to paraphrase the words of my friend regarding the act of mothering in the current context. Mothering is not exclusive to mothers anymore in today's context. These days it extends broadly to women and men, gays and lesbians, who have taken on the challenge of  rearing children in whatever circumstances. It is no easy feat mothering children so today is their day on the pedestal, but everyday their contribution to nurturing human life will always be in our hearts. Happy Mother's Day to my Mama and Papa. I salute you both for sharing this role all through these years, down to your grandchildren. Thank you for being our giving tree and I pray that the Lord up there that He will not take away His eyes off the two of you. I...
Milestones & Disappointments
2010-03-28 13:00:00
Even though Dylan was now officially our son, during the 15-day appeal period after court we could see him only during our allotted two hours of daily visitation. You would think that, having been through this routine every day for two months, those last 15 days would have been a breeze. In truth, they were actually the hardest ones of the whole adoption process.   Once that judge issued the adoption order, something changed in me. I had always felt tenderness for Dylan from the moment I met him, but now I began to feel something else welling up inside: protectiveness. The mama bear in me started coming out, and I began to resent it when the caregivers would scold...
Milestones Achieved
2009-02-12 21:19:00
Despite plenty of spare time, I haven't been writing much, because really, does anyone want to read about "I walked two blocks today" or "my incisions are healing nicely"? I think not, and I don't really want to write about it. I will say that long-term healing is a pretty boring process, though I wouldn't think that if it suddenly went wrong.I'm facing one little ethical dilemma. Some guy in New York apparently used my e-mail address to establish his account for a popular "hook up with married people" dating site. (my personal e-mail address is one that is easily chosen if you hit random keys, unfortunately.) So I'm getting lots of e-mails with notes like "LuvsHumpin09 has sent you a message!" That's pretty irritating. I sent a note to the site's customer service asking them to remove my e-mail address from this account, with no luck. Here's the dilemma: when I click on links in the e-mails, I'm into his account -- without needing to know the password. Since he freely used ...

Retirement milestones by Age
2008-08-28 04:54:00
There are a number of age milestones on the road to retirement. These are points in your life at which you become eligible for a special status or privilege which you were not entitled to until then.I have tried to list all age milestones that apply to typical American retirees below. Even if you are not close to retiring, it is good to know what lies ahead. It is also interesting to see what the implication of these milestones are for someone who wants to retire early.Age 50:At 50, you are eligible to start making "catch-up" contributions to 401(k) and IRA accounts. For IRAs, in 2008, you can invest an additional $1,000 over the $5,000 limit. For 401(k) and 403(b) plans, you can contribute $5,000 above the $15,500 limit in 2008.One way to look at this milestone is that if you haven't saved a significant amount for retirement by age 50, this should serve as a wake-up call. Even the IRS thinks that it is time for you to get your act together. For those who are on track with their ...
Three Milestones On The Road To War
2008-08-13 00:34:00
It is obviously good news that Georgia has apparently agreed to the terms of the cease fire brokered by Nikolas Sarkozy of France along with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev (here), but I would like to point out three developments over the last two years (more or less) that pointed to the recent conflict (IMHO)?This tells us of the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya in October 2006, who wrote about the war in Chechnya and Russian Prime Minister (and former president, of course) Vladimir Putin?s role; a campaign which was supposedly to last ?two weeks? in 1999 instead spawned a wave of terrorism by separatists which led to the brutal deaths of children at a Beslan school (I have no evidence upon which to blame Putin for that horrific act, I wish to emphasize, but only the tactics that led up to that). However, I would argue that, by this country?s relative silence in the aftermath of Politkovskaya?s death (as well as other dissidents), our ruling cabal made it clear to P...
Milestones in Drug Policy, Homegrown Solutions Are Best.
2008-07-01 21:43:00
Milestones in Drug Policy, Homegrown Solutions Are Best.Thirty five years ago today, on July 1, 1973, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was established, based on an executive order signed by President Richard Nixon in March, 1973.A pivotal part of Nixon's War on Drugs, the DEA was formed by merging the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD), the Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement (ODALE) and several other Federal offices. As a United States Department of Justice law enforcement agency, the DEA's primary task was to combat drug smuggling and use within the United States, and coordinate and pursue US drug investigations abroad. In 1973, the DEA employed 2775 people, 1470 of whom were special agents, and had an annual budget of $74.9 million. By 2005, the DEA boasted 10,894 employees, 5,296 special agents, and an annual budget of $2.141 billion. In 2007, the annual budget was increased again, by $71 million per year, making the total 34 times larger than the original...

Photo Hunt #18: Metal
2008-03-23 03:05:00
My entry for this week is -- drum rolls please -- our wedding rings! My husband and I decided to have our wedding rings handmade to our own choice of design, and both were made by the same person. Our rings were made of silver and gold - crafted by a local jeweler here in Cambodia. We chose gold and silver because we thought it is a significant symbol being in a mixed race marriage. Each one coming from a different worlds and cultures, each one bringing a new and different dimension to each other. It's like the ring - two different metals molded into one.
