The Milky Way Is Weighed
2008-05-28 12:02:00 The Milky Way galaxy weighs about 1 trillion times as much as our sun, according to a new estimatePrevious estimates had ranged from 750 billion solar masses to up to 2 trillion. Lately, researchers have been leaning toward the higher figure. But now astronomers have used a more refined method to conclude that our galaxy's mass is slightly less than 1 trillion solar masses. The galaxy's mass is a mix of stars, gas, dust and mysterious dark matter. The new estimate is based on a large sample of stars in the galactic halo, a relatively sparse sphere of stars that surrounds our galaxy's main disk. The speeds of stars in the halo reveal the mass of the galaxy by allowing astrophysicists to infer the amount of gravity required to keep those stars in orbit. "The galaxy is slimmer than we thought," said Xiangxiang Xue of the National Astronomical Observatories of China, who led the international team of researchers. "That means it has less dark matter than previously believed, but also ...

Sun's Movement Through Milky Way Regularly Sends Comets Hurtling, Coincidin
2008-05-08 15:13:00 The sun's movement through the Milky Way regularly sends comets hurtling into the inner solar system -- coinciding with mass life extinctions on earth, a new study claims. The study suggests a link between comet bombardment and the movement through the galaxy.Scientists at the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology built a computer model of our solar system's movement and found that it "bounces" up and down through the plane of the galaxy. As we pass through the densest part of the plane, gravitational forces from the surrounding giant gas and dust clouds dislodge comets from their paths. The comets plunge into the solar system, some of them colliding with the earth.

2008-04-03 14:16:00 THE discovery in our own galaxy of the smallest black hole known in the universe is a feather in the cap for NASA, but it will present new challenges to future space travellers who may venture too close. The Daily Telegraph “NASA finds a black hole in our Milky Way galaxy“
The Milky Antagonist
2008-03-22 05:38:00 Tell [Ginney] you're not interested and make your rejection fully understood, and do this as soon as possible. Simply by not responding to the last thing he typed, he has already assumed that you harbor a certain level of affection towards him (the "silence means yes" thing).Let this be a learning experience for him.How I wish I could.Ginney has never actually told me he likes me as anything more than a good friend. He would have me believe that he doesn't have any romantic feelings towards me at all - like he said in the MSN conversation, I'm nice to him "in a frinesih way". Unfortuantely, he's very transparent, and on top of that a mutual friend who's quite close to both of us told me what he told her. Apparently he told her that he really likes me (romantically) and when she asked him what he was going to do about it he said "I don't know. Nothing," then "Watch from afar."I think that's a bit creepy. Worse, it means that he'll be deluding himself for ages that I might eve...

Earth Like Planets Not Rare in Milky Way
2008-02-19 20:12:00 Using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, a team of scientists found that at least 20 percent, and possibly the majority (as many as 60 percent) of stars similar to the sun are candidates for forming rocky planets. The Legacy Science Program set out to determine whether planetary systems like ours are common or rare in the Milky Way. What they found is that many, perhaps even most, of the sun-like stars in our galaxy could well harbor Earth-like planets. The Spitzer team found that at least 1 in 5 neighboring solar-mass stars have the right conditions to have formed terrestrial worlds. This new research indicates that worlds with potential for life may be relatively common. The research appears in Astrophysical Journal Letters, and the findings were also presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The research team included University of Arizona astronomer Michael Meyer and colleagues John Carpenter of the California Institute of Technolog...

Connection Between Milky Way Galaxy and 2012 Mayan Calendar
2008-02-12 17:20:00 Most astronomers are now convinced that at the center of our Galaxy is a massive black hole the unimaginable seize of millions of our suns. This is where Science and Mythology truly meet. For what the center of our Galaxy may represent in terms of energy and the properties of time/space, no one has a clue. But to the ancient Maya the Milky Way Galaxy represented the Great Cosmic Mother from which all Life was birthed. They saw our Galactic Mother stretching out across the night sky and somehow recognize the place where we all had come from. And the great central bulge at Her center they perceived as the Cosmic Womb. Within the central bulge there is what looks like a dark corridor, known as the dark rift. To the Maya it was referred to by many names but the most pertinent here is their reference to this area as the "birthing place". Are we beginning to get the picture here?Considering then the significance of the 2012 date in the Mayan calendar, it has been discovered that this year ...

Nebula in our Milky Way Galaxy could be Extraterrestrial UFO Gateway, Scien
2008-01-25 22:22:00 ?Scientists are observing something interesting. It is an unprecedented elongated double helix nebula near the center of our Milky Way galaxy?, the India Daily reports. Using observations from NASA?s Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers report an unprecedented elongated double helix nebula near the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. The part of the nebula the astronomers observed stretches 80 light years in length. The research is published March 16 issue of the journal Nature.?We see two intertwining strands wrapped around each other as in a DNA molecule,? said Mark Morris, UCLA professor of physics and astronomy, and lead author. ?Nobody has ever seen anything like that before in the cosmic realm. Most nebulae are either spiral galaxies full of stars or formless amorphous conglomerations of dust and gas - space weather. ? The double helix nebula is approximately 300 light years from the enormous black hole at the center of the Milky Way. (The Earth is more than 25,000 light years fro...

Why do we call our galaxy the Milky Way?
2008-01-23 06:13:00 In both ancient Greek and Roman myths, it was believed that the goddess Hera (or its Roman equivalent - Juno) spilled milk across the sky and called the white streak it left a ?river of milk?. The Romans called it Via Lactea or a “road made of milk”. This is how our galaxy came to ...
Zooming into Our Milky Way Galaxy
2008-01-18 02:13:00 This animation zooms in on the centre of the Milky Way using images taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. It ends with an artist's conception of the galaxy's central black hole, Sgr A*, and a disc of matter that undergoes a flare as it falls into the hole.We are close to seeing the true blackness of a black hole. Astronomers have detected radio emission coming from within 30 million kilometres of the dark object, thought to be a colossal black hole, that lies at the centre of the galaxy.

Milky Way galaxy may be host to hundreds of “rogue†black holes
2008-01-10 10:16:00 Computer simulations have suggested that there might be hundreds of rogue black holes roaming around the Milky Way galaxy, which might weigh several thousand times the mass of the sun. The simulation was developed by a supercomputer at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, US, with much of the research done at Penn State University. In the past two years, scientists have succeeded in numerically simulating black hole mergers that incorporate Einstein’s theory of relativity. One of the big surprises to come from this effort is the prediction that when two black holes that are rotating at different speeds or are different sizes combine, the newly merged black hole receives a big kick due to conservation of momentum, pushing it away in an arbitrary direction at velocities as high as 4,000 kilometers per second. This fact made the researchers refer the black holes as to being “rogue” in nature. “This is much higher than anyone predicted....

Gemma Atkinson gives baby a very milky cleavage show!
2007-12-17 15:57:00 Gemma Atkinson shows boobs to a three years old baby! And he actually liked it! This kids are growing so fast these days..... Almost any girl wants to have a baby or two someday! I'm sure Gemma Atkinson feels the same, but because she's still to young for a child – thank God she's not giving up on us just yet - she thought of trying to get closer to a three years old boy, probably to see his reaction when seeing her giants! I tell you this: that kiddon had the view of his life! Too bad he gave up breast feeding too soon, as I'm sure he would have liked to get his teeth on Geema's funbags! What the hell am I talking about, he can barely walk... he doesn't know what fanbags are for! He sees Gemma Atkinson's boobs as a food resource! And that's how it should remain... at least for him! Me on the other hand... i'd love to get a bite of Gemma's boobs, and believe that's not because I...
